tools that will improve your ability with

also learn how to do basic tasks on a
Russian OS.

Русификация
• We will begin by Russifying our operating systems by accessing alternate
keyboards and region preferences.
ABBYY Lingvo & Anki
• Next we will explore two useful programs for language learning.
• We will install and use these programs to practice some computer words.
Русские Операционные Системы
• We will see how different common functions are labeled on a Russian language
operating system.
Stamina
• Lastly we will use a Russian typing practice program and navigate its menus.

Many other words are similar
to Russian.
Mac users can access similar functionality through Control Panel International. Be prepared to demonstrate. Tell users of Linux that they can figure this out on their own.
Windows demo. Again, be prepared to help out Mac users as the menu system is different. Control Panel should be accessible in the toolbar.
Clicking “Change keyboards of other input methods” is the fastest way to get to the appropriate menu, but clicking “Clock, Language, Region” will also work (it’s one extra step).In that case it’s Clock, Language, Region Change keyboards of other input methods, and after this as the slides depict.
Click the underlined phrase. If someone has already changed keyboards, they can stop after this step until the “Change System Local” slide.
Be sure to note that Ukrainian (Ukraine) is also a useful addition.
Explain that this step is optional. Necessary to read menus in Stamina.
Provide with flash drive, guide through install as needed. May go over Anki now or at the end of the presentation, but ABBYY Lingvo is best presented now. Only Anki is cross platform.Note that for the copy of ABBYY Lingvo both the serial number/access code AND the activation patch are needed for it to work properly.
Totally skippable; just note that Windows is by far the most common OS in Ukraine, with XP and Vista still prevalent as of mid-2011.
Ask people to guess the meanings for this and following slides. They should get them mostly right based on the pictures.

After going over the words, have an activity ready to help the participants absorb the vocabulary.
Other words are similar to Russian (may have different endings or slightly different spellings). May skip this if the previous information was already overwhelming.
If you didn’t go over installation earlier have the participants install Stamina now. Have them launch the program. If a participant is running Mac OS let them know that this program may run under a Windows emulator like Wine.
To access the on-screen keyboard in Windows: Start All Programs Accessories Ease of Access On-Screen KeyboardTo access an active keyboard while running Stamina: Опции Клавиатура, or press F2
Have participants try out the program, go over the menus, and try to elicit the meanings of words. If installation of ABBYY Lingvo was successful, have them use the hover-define function for various menu words. They may then proceed to try out lesson one if they want. If you reserved Anki until the end present it now.
