Colonialism involves one group colonizing another people or land by going to a distant place to live and potentially conquer the local population. Countries and peoples often colonized others for negative reasons like capturing slaves, stealing land and resources, and becoming wealthy. Examples include Spain colonizing much of the Americas, taking the land and native people for these exploitative purposes, and England colonizing what is now the United States, bringing Africans as slaves rather than native Americans. Colonialism contributed to globalization by spreading the colonizers' language and religion, and as the world globalizes more, traditional cultures risk being lost forever.
European countries colonized other lands in the 1500s due to declining natural resources and overpopulation at home. By colonizing the Americas, European colonists gained access to new lands and opportunities but killed, enslaved, or displaced millions of native Americans in the process. The European colonization of the Americas resulted in genocide of native peoples and was one of the bloodiest periods in human history. European colonists also brought African slaves to the Americas to work, especially after native Americans proved to not survive slavery well. Colonialism essentially involved foreign groups invading, killing, enslaving, or displacing indigenous populations and establishing control over new territories and peoples.

The Asmat are an indigenous hunter-gatherer culture living in West Papua, Indonesia, on the western half of the island north of Australia; they are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world, with traditions like nose piercing and body painting for ceremonies and war, but deforestation, colonization, and assimilation are negatively impacting their traditional way of life and culture.
The Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand, an island country in the South Pacific Ocean located off the southeast coast of Australia. While some Maori continue traditional cultural practices like the haka war dance and moko tattooing, others have adopted non-traditional, modern lifestyles. However, like other conquered indigenous groups, many Maori still struggle with issues such as poverty, alcoholism, and drug abuse.
According to the Maori creation story, Rangi (Heaven) and Papa (Earth) were the original ancestors who clung closely together in darkness. They had six sons - Tane-mahuta (forests), Tawhrir-ma-tea (winds and storms), Tangaroa (fish and reptiles), Tu-Matauenga (humans), Haumia-tikitiki (uncultivated food), and Rongo-ma-tane (cultivated food) - who lived with them in darkness for a long time, wondering what light might be like.

Fumeripits was the first being to exist on earth according to Asmat tradition. Growing tired of being alone, he carved human figures out of trees and placed them in the ceremonial men's house, but they did not come to life. So Fumeripits created a drum from a hollowed out tree and stretched lizard skin over it. When he played the drum, the carved human figures came to life, unstuck their elbows from their knees, and began to dance - thus creating the first people from trees, who were the Asmat people.
This document discusses pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Lignocellulosic biomass consists primarily of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Pre-treatment is necessary to break down the biomass and make the cellulose accessible for conversion to biofuels. The document examines different pre-treatment processes and their benefits. It proposes on-site pre-treatment of biomass at the source to address issues with transporting low-density biomass. On-site pre-treatment could benefit farmers through job creation and industries by providing purified and compact feedstock with less investment needed. The author's research focuses on developing on-site pre-treatment methods.
This document summarizes a demonstration of abrasive waterjet micro-machining of a planetary gear set using a 5-10 nozzle on an OMAX 2626 jetmachining center. The demonstration shows tool paths for cutting the ring gear from a block and assembling the cut components into a full gear set. A micro motor is then used to drive the assembled planetary gear set to demonstrate functionality. The work aims to showcase the potential for low-cost manufacturing of small mechanical devices using micro abrasive waterjet technology.
