An Annotated Bibliography
Statement of Scope: I am writing a research paper on the topic of Animal Rights and whether humans should eat meat. My argument is that humans have the right to farm and eat animals. The purpose of this bibliography is to provide an overview of some current viewpoints and research about this topic.

Summary:
This article by the advocacy group Animal Liberation argues that animals have the right to life in the same way that humans do. The group observes that, according to the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights, all human life—regardless of disability or intelligence—has inherent value. Because we do not equate intelligence with value in terms of human life, we should not, they claim, do the same with animals. In other words, just because animals are not as intelligent as humans, this does not mean that their lives are not as valuable as human life. In fact, the group asserts that “[t]he way animals are exploited and treated without respect is a prejudice like racism” (Animal Liberation).
Evaluation:
The fact that this essay appears on the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database suggests that the views expressed are in keeping with the philosophy of many animal rights groups. I looked up the group Animal Liberation online and found that the group’s full name is Animal Liberation Front. Their credo is to “[carry] out direct action against animal abuse in the form of rescuing animals and causing financial loss to animal exploiters, usually through the damage and destruction of property.” Of course, this group is biased and espouses what might be described as an extreme view. However, their essay brings up a good philosophical point; namely, on what basis do humans measure the value of life? Clearly, religious, ethical, and cultural traditions have shaped the way we understand the relationship between animals and humans. In my essay, I will examine and rebut the philosophy of the Animal Liberation in order to craft my own argument.

Data is something that every researcher needs in order to show his work and to justify whether his hypothesis is correct or incorrect. What you are actually researching can sometimes dictate how you need to do your research. There are two different types of research methods and that is quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative is exactly what it sounds like. Take statists and numbers along with results of everything that is being studied and researched to compare them with one another (Brians, 2011). Qualitative is more of a personal experience form of gathering data. Take for instance individuals that go and learn about other cultures. The journals or papers they write ae usually about their experiences and what they have seen. Their perspectives give rise to understanding and influence. It’s important to be able to understand the difference and have good comprehension as it will show you the best war to gather data for your hypothesis or subject you’re studying. Our research is for homeland security so let’s head in that direction.
A case can be had for either research method could be used to figure out which is the best but that is not the question. The question is which I believe is most helpful. Let’s say for instance new laws and regulations have been put in place to ensure that no terrorist get into the country or can attack America again. How are you going to quantify that information unless it has been done in a quantitative method where information is being compared to the time before the laws to the time after to see if the laws have worked?
Now that I have answered the question I would also like to point out that sometimes getting this information requires individuals to have the information from the field itself and to actually make suggestions based on their actual practical applications they have seen. This top couple is descriptive which could be one or the other method of data collection.

Research methods are usually categorized as being either quantitative or qualitative. Explain the difference between quantitative and qualitative methods. Identify which method of research you believe is most useful in homeland security research.
Quantitative methods emphasis on detached observations and documenting the findings in a numerical manner. (Brian, Willnat, Manheim, & Rich, 2011). Quantitative research needs to have specific question and have an idea of what you want you to gain from the research.
Qualitative research, is “based on the researcher’s informed understanding” of the topic being researched (Brians, et al, 2011, p. 2). The difference here would be that qualitative research focuses on the study of people in their own environment and watching events as the “naturally” take place (Brians, et al., 2011, p. 83). Qualitative is an evolution in the study of research as it unfolds and give a larger picture to me in that the observer can see the whole scope of the int.

Three Approaches to Reasoning
As we have addressed several times in this course, intelligence is a product manufactured from the exploitation of processed intelligence information, which in turn is a result of the collection of information by an intelligence collection platform. Intelligence analysts must often create intelligence products under conditions of incomplete or even inaccurate information.
To do so, we move back and forth between data points represented in intelligence information and models representing targets of interest to intelligence consumers; hence the reason why in this course we have placed so much emphasis on structured analytic techniques to manage information and target-centric approaches to building and analyze models. One way of looking at each side of this coin is by dividing it into two styles of reasoning, called inductive and deductive.
Inductive Reasoning
In inductive reasoning, several specific observations (data) lead to a generalized conclusion (theory) through a process (summarizing). So, for example, if we look around and see that every swan we see is white then we can use inductive reasoning to generate the theory that all swans are white. In fact, for centuries we in the Western world did think all swans were white until we observed black swans for the first time in Australia, which brings us to a key feature of inductive reasoning: probability.
Inductive reasoning is inherently probabilistic, meaning that it always allows for the possibility that a piece of data may come to light that contradicts a general principle that has served very well up until now to explain every other piece of data available. One of the issues with using inductive reasoning is that analysts sometimes forget that it is probabilistic. This means that the results of inductive reasoning are openly acknowledged to be the product of the data that have been included in the analysis, with the understanding that new data might mean a revision of the results.
A natural human bias, however, is to reject or discount contradictory evidence in part because changing one’s position on a subject incurs costs (remember our lecture on Appalachian Mountain problems in Week 5).
A well-known philosopher by the name of Karl Popper was reportedly in the company of a friend of his who was doctor. A nurse came to the door and told the doctor that he had a new patient waiting for an examination. The doctor asked what the patient’s symptoms were and after the nurse described them, the doctor declared the diagnosis and issued a prescription. After the nurse left, Popper supposedly asked the doctor how he knew what illness the patient had without even seeing him. The doctor responded that he had seen 1,000 people with those symptoms, to which Popper replied that the patient then must have been the 1,001st.
If analysts can keep in mind when they are (and are not) using inductive reasoning, then they can leave more room in their anal.
Animal Experimentation

Three Approaches to Reasoning
As we have addressed several times in this course, intelligence is a product manufactured from the exploitation of processed intelligence information, which in turn is a result of the collection of information by an intelligence collection platform. Intelligence analysts must often create intelligence products under conditions of incomplete or even inaccurate information.
To do so, we move back and forth between data points represented in intelligence information and models representing targets of interest to intelligence consumers; hence the reason why in this course we have placed so much emphasis on structured analytic techniques to manage information and target-centric approaches to building and analyze models. One way of looking at each side of this coin is by dividing it into two styles of reasoning, called inductive and deductive.
Inductive Reasoning
In inductive reasoning, several specific observations (data) lead to a generalized conclusion (theory) through a process (summarizing). So, for example, if we look around and see that every swan we see is white then we can use inductive reasoning to generate the theory that all swans are white. In fact, for centuries we in the Western world did think all swans were white until we observed black swans for the first time in Australia, which brings us to a key feature of inductive reasoning: probability.
Inductive reasoning is inherently probabilistic, meaning that it always allows for the possibility that a piece of data may come to light that contradicts a general principle that has served very well up until now to explain every other piece of data available. One of the issues with using inductive reasoning is that analysts sometimes forget that it is probabilistic. This means that the results of inductive reasoning are openly acknowledged to be the product of the data that have been included in the analysis, with the understanding that new data might mean a revision of the results.
A natural human bias, however, is to reject or discount contradictory evidence in part because changing one’s position on a subject incurs costs (remember our lecture on Appalachian Mountain problems in Week 5).
A well-known philosopher by the name of Karl Popper was reportedly in the company of a friend of his who was doctor. A nurse came to the door and told the doctor that he had a new patient waiting for an examination. The doctor asked what the patient’s symptoms were and after the nurse described them, the doctor declared the diagnosis and issued a prescription. After the nurse left, Popper supposedly asked the doctor how he knew what illness the patient had without even seeing him. The doctor responded that he had seen 1,000 people with those symptoms, to which Popper replied that the patient then must have been the 1,001st.
If analysts can keep in mind when they are (and are not) using inductive reasoning, then they can leave more room in their anal.
Animal Experimentation

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the

I found myself agreeing with them to a greater extent than I normally do. While pondering why I found their position more appealing than usual that evening, I noted that I was also in a rather misanthropic mood that day. That suggested to me that there might be an association between misanthropy and support for animal rights. When evaluating the ethical status of an action that does some harm to a nonhuman animal, I generally do a cost/benefit analysis, weighing the benefit to humankind against the cost of harm done to the nonhuman. When doing such an analysis, if one does not think much of humankind (is misanthropic), e is unlikely to be able to justify harming nonhumans. To the extent that one does not like humans, one will not be likely to think that benefits to humans can justify doing harm to nonhumans. I decided to investigate the relationship between misanthropy and support of animal rights. Mike Poteat and I developed an animal rights questionnaire, and I developed a few questions designed to measure misanthropy. One of our graduate students, Kevin Jenkins, collected the data we shall analyze here. His respondents were students at ECU. I used reliability and factor analysis to evaluate the scales (I threw a few items out). All of the items were Likert-type items, on a 5-point scale. For each scale, we computed each respondent's mean on the items included in that scale. The scale ran from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). On the Animal Rights scale (AR), high scores represent support of animal rights positions (such as not eating meat, not wearing leather, not doing research on animals, etc.). On the Misanthropy scale (MISANTH), high scores represent high misanthropy (such as agreeing with the statement that humans are basically wicked).
