Downtown has played a vital role in my
work and in my life during the past 23
years that I have been with Trillium Family
Solutions. This social services agency has
always been based in the center city – in
various locations including the former
United Way building and now the Stern
and Mann building – with good reason.
Many of our clients live downtown or near
downtown. Many of the human services
agencies with which we work are located
downtown. So are the Stark County
Courthouse and probate court – a very
important consideration because many of
our clients are involved in the court system.
A bus line runs through downtown.
As a result, it simply makes good sense that
when Trillium moves into a larger facility
next fall, it will be downtown – the former
Polsky’s building at 624 Market Ave. N.!
We now own the building and are renovat-
ing it, with generous donations and support
from Aultman, Huntington Bank, the Stark
County foundations and others.
Owning the building will enable Trillium
to have more control over its budget,
eliminating rent that continues to rise in
large increments and hefty parking fees
for our 160 employees.
The new facility has contiguous free parking
and is more handicapped – accessible.
It is nearly double the size of our current
cramped offices and will provide space
where I can conduct meetings with all
employees at one time – a first! A new
phone system will enable us to connect
with our other sites instantly, and, critically
important, the space will be professional,
fresh and clean. It speaks to the dignity
with which we hold our clients.
From a personal standpoint, I love being
downtown. I can walk anywhere I need
to go. I enjoy the variety of restaurants
and like seeing people I know – great
for networking! Downtown is a true
neighborhood of very friendly people.

For The M. Conley Company, family values trans-
late into social responsibility. Established nearly
100 years ago and now in its fourth generation of
private ownership, the company is taking its deep-
seeded commitment to its employees and the com-
munity into an important new arena. It is quickly
becoming a business leader in sustainability and
environmental responsibility.
“We have always focused on our own backyard,”
said Kirsten Conley, creative director and brand
manager. “Environmentalism is one of our core val-
ues. It is our social responsibility, and the market
demands it.”
The company strives to make all internal operations
as eco-friendly as possible, recycling waste materi-
als in its corporate offices as well as its distribution
center with the help of Team M. Conley, a group of
employees with a strong awareness of green val-
ues that also helps carry out the company’s phil-
anthropic spirit with charitable, community-minded
projects.
The company is making strides toward a paperless
workplace, converting to high-efficiency lighting
and Green Seal-certified products for in-house
cleaning, installing operable windows in the work-
space to increase daylight and natural ventilation
for the benefit of its employees’ health and
well-being, reducing printing in favor of an on-line
catalog, and conducting frequent training for its
staff on the advancements of eco-friendly products,
industry trends, ecological concerns, and up-to-
date USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council)
environmental standards.
Perhaps most notable is the company’s cultivation
of an on-staff environmental expert to serve as
a resource not only for its own business, but also
to its customers, the City and the community.
Holly Conley, the company’s environmental
consultant, is in the process of completing a
stringent course of study to become a LEED AP
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Accredited Professional). This credential demon-
strates a thorough understanding of green building
and the LEED Green Building Rating System, which
sets standards for environmentally sustainable con-
struction, renovation and building maintenance.
Holly’s expertise was critical in helping the com-
pany share its knowledge and build an awareness
of green services and products via the first annual
Green Exhibition Trade Show, launched this past
April at, appropriately, The Metropolitan Centre,
one of only four LEED-certified buildings in Ohio.
Manufacturers presented green alternatives across
all product lines distributed by The M. Conley
Company. The company has branded these prod-
ucts under the name “SPROUT” so their customers
can easily identify their eco-friendly choices.
“We hope that we opened some eyes about green
products and challenged some misconceptions that
environmentally conscious goods are more expen-
sive or of lesser quality than others,” Conley said.
The M. Conley Company has branded a line
of eco-friendly products with the name
‘sprout.’
