A message from our Principal
BY MR. DANIEL CHOWNE

"It is not a question of  starting. The
start has been made. It's a question of
what's to be done from now on."
B.F. Skinner
This is exactly how we like it: It is another
spectacular Spring in Vancouver and we are,
as always, enjoying the beautiful setting of
the school and its ‘heart of the downtown’
location. We look around us and we see a
profusion of greenery and colourful
plantings.
At the same time, our thoughts turn to the
importance of the transition from the 2018-
2019 to the 2019-2020 academic year in BC
education. In the following months, we
embark upon the final year of curriculum
evolution that has led us from the focus on
content and data [in the Graduation
Program 2004] to the focus on collaborative
inquiry, research, First Nations principles of
learning, and self/peer assessment [in the
Graduation Program 2018]. These are
exciting times as the high school program
becomes increasingly inclusive of
methodologies to promote individual
students' exploration of the academic world.
In addition to the academic work that is our
major focus every day, there is a great deal
of extra-curricular energy that we enjoy.
Through either participation, or observation,
we see clubs in action, community services in
effect, and our diverse population of students
enjoying each others’ company.
Administrative staff and teachers are pleased
with the care and support that is
demonstrated among students who represent
almost two dozen countries. You are receiving
this Bits & Bytes newsletter following the
electronic publication of the mid term reports.
By this time, the recipient has a formal
picture of the progress of the student. This is
an important time in the semester as we are
at week 8 of the 15 weeks – at the 55% stage of
learning and achievement.
Upcoming this month are an English 12
Provincial Exam sitting on June 24 and the
Numeracy Assessment from June 21 to 27.
We look forward to meeting with everyone at
the Parent / Teacher night on June 20.
Sincerely,
Daniel Chowne,
Principal.

"The most creative act you
will ever undertake is the
act of creating yourself."

_______________
As I write this, we are now more than halfway
through this sunny Spring 2019 semester at
Pattison High School.  Over the past 8 ½ weeks,
since we started at the end of April, our students
have been working and studying hard with the
guidance of our outstanding teaching faculty.
Now, students and parents alike are eagerly
anticipating the midterm grade report cards.
Within the counselling office, our Grade 12
students are finalizing their details for
University/College for their exciting starts in
September or January, and now our Grade 11
students are excitedly coming by to discuss their
post-secondary goals! It is indeed a very exciting
time of year.
Beyond academics, I also rejoice in seeing new
friendships grow within our beautiful
international student population.  Some of these
friendships have developed through classroom
work and shared goals, and also through our
many various clubs and activities. This week
alone will be a busy one, as we prepare to greet
and welcome all parents, guardians and
custodians at our Parent/Teacher night
Thursday.
We were all delighted to enjoy the past "Welcome
Back to School" BBQ event and our Student
Government has been busy preparing for every
occasion that is upcoming, including our
Canada Day BBQ on June 28th! I also had the joy of
watching and listening to all of our Pattison High
School students taking the time to write a  “Canada
Quiz” in anticipation of adding more Provincial
House points to their tally. That was a lot of fun!
July will bring more fun and activities. We will all
head up to the top of Grouse Mountain for the day
on July 5th! Some will be zip-lining, some
challenging themselves to the Adventure Rope
course high in the trees, while others will be
discovering the mountain top! We can’t wait!
Moreover, July also will bring our amazing Private
Yacht Cruise for our fabulous grads, guests, and
Prom attendees. The details are still developing,
but I can feel the excitement building.
July also brings the development of careful and
thoughtful planning for the next semester of Fall
2019.  I will be meeting with all students to discuss
their upcoming semester and their Graduation
Plans. I immensely enjoy sharing in all the
enthusiasm, energy, and passion that our students
bring to our school and bring to my office.  I share
in their successes as well as their struggles, and
have had the pleasure and honour of their stories.
I wish all our students the best over the remainder
of this Spring 2019 semester and their future
pursuits; both academically and socially.

On April 14th 2019, PHS Students and faculty, including Ms. Moran, Ms.
Pettinger, Mr. Spangler, and Mr. Chowne put on their running gear and ran for
a great cause! The Sun Run promotes health, fitness and a sense of
community. It is one of the largest road races in North America; proud to have
donated close to $2.625 million in charitable proceeds in the past 35 years.

On a beautiful and sunny Friday afternoon, PHS
students celebrated with "Mr. A's Barbie - Q!"
event. Live music was performed throughout the
event by students, a range of tasty foods and
treats were prepared, and everyone thoroughly
enjoyed a relaxing, fun filled afternoon.
"The purpose of the welcome back to school BBQ
was to welcome new students while introducing
them to our current students. The BBQ created a
friendly environment for all the students to
engage in a non-academic activity. As the
President of the Student Council, I can declare
the event a success. A success towards which,
all the members of the Student
Council contributed. Thank you, Pattison High
School for giving us this opportunity, and thank
you, Student Council for your association."
The President of the Student Council,
Kimiya Mansoori.

Commencement Ceremony at the
Vancouver Art Gallery
Congratulations to our wonderful Winter 2019 Semester graduates, who
celebrated their commencement ceremony and prom at the Vancouver Art
Gallery on April 11th 2019.
A memorable evening was enjoyed by all, as music students performed
beautiful melodies and heart-felt speeches filled the air. Everyone cherished
the experiences they had during the semester, and commended the graduates
for their hard work.
As always, Pattison High School is immensely proud to be a part of your
educational journey, and wishes all graduates the best of luck in all of their
future endeavors.

The Pattison Panther’s running club was started by Ms. Moran at the beginning of this
year to help students prepare for the Vancouver Sun Run. The Vancouver Sun Run is
Canada’s largest 10K road race and everyone is encouraged to participate. The race and
our running club focuses on promoting health and wellness, team spirit, and fun. We
had a great turnout for the race and plan to continue running throughout the spring
semester. We welcome all running levels and abilities and emphasise involvement and
effort. The club meets with Mr. Spangler and Ms. Pettinger every Tuesday at 4:00 pm for
about 30 to 45 minutes depending on students’ level and desire.

The Student Council
The Student Council at Pattison High School invites students to gain
experience in administrative and parliamentary procedure, group planning
and cooperation, along with planning events, providing peer mentorship and
collaborative experiences. This type of activity is intended to prepare
students for joining student clubs, along with student governments, at the
university level.
During the Winter 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized and hosted
the extremely popular "Break the Rules Day" for general fundraising, while
designing and coordinating a St. Patrick's day event (with some help from
Ms.Egan!). Futhermore, in perhaps their most ambitious project to date; the
Student Council helped consolidate Pattison High School's graduation prom,
with Ms.Moran, at the Vancouver Art Gallery Law house.
So far during the Spring 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized a
welcome-back-to school BBQ and are planning Canada Day Celebrations. If
anyone is ever interested in joining the Student's Council to earn volunteer
hours and professional development evidence (an in-demand university
asset), they are encouraged to come join the Student Council!

their ability to interact with adults in the community."
-  The Secretary (Minute Taker) of the Student Council,
Ha Anh Dinh (Amelia)
"The Student Council is a safe environment for students’

Natural science is the study of the world around us, and is composed of
biological sciences and physical sciences. It is both a body of existing
knowledge, and the process of acquiring new knowledge through
observation and experimentation. As a consequence, science is always
evolving as new discoveries are made.
In Science 10, we investigate topics such as genetics and how DNA affects
traits and heredity, chemical reactions and energy transfers and how they
affect our lives, as well as astronomy and how technology has helped
expand our understanding of the universe.
As much as possible, hands-on activities and videos will help students gain
a deeper understanding of the world we live in. To discuss enrollment, talk
to Mr. Vandervelde or Ms. Moran.

exemplary students for their
outstanding performance and
contribution to our school, after
completing the Winter semester.
It was a rewarding and positive day
hand delivering certificates, as the
school congratulated and recognized
the students who go above and
beyond in their efforts and work
every day.
Since this is a continuing tradition,
every student is eligible to be
nominated and awarded at the end of
each semester. Let's keep working
hard to achieve greatness together!
Below you will see our Principal Mr.

"Teachers are really kind and they want to help the students improve.
The atmosphere is very friendly and the staffs and students are really
supportive. Meeting people from other countries is another thing that I
like about PHS. I have learned a lot about different cultures and
languages. I made new friends, and I created lots of beautiful memories
with them. When I first came to PHS, I was worried about the new
environment, but my teachers and friends helped me to be strong and
confident. PHS made me ready for my future. Thanks PHS for
everything. ”

  • 3. A message from our Principal BY MR. DANIEL CHOWNE BITS AND BYTES | PAGE 03 pattisonhighschool.ca "It is not a question of  starting. The start has been made. It's a question of what's to be done from now on."  B.F. Skinner This is exactly how we like it: It is another spectacular Spring in Vancouver and we are, as always, enjoying the beautiful setting of the school and its ‘heart of the downtown’ location. We look around us and we see a profusion of greenery and colourful plantings. At the same time, our thoughts turn to the importance of the transition from the 2018- 2019 to the 2019-2020 academic year in BC education. In the following months, we embark upon the final year of curriculum evolution that has led us from the focus on content and data [in the Graduation Program 2004] to the focus on collaborative inquiry, research, First Nations principles of learning, and self/peer assessment [in the Graduation Program 2018]. These are exciting times as the high school program becomes increasingly inclusive of methodologies to promote individual students' exploration of the academic world.  In addition to the academic work that is our major focus every day, there is a great deal of extra-curricular energy that we enjoy. Through either participation, or observation, we see clubs in action, community services in effect, and our diverse population of students enjoying each others’ company. Administrative staff and teachers are pleased with the care and support that is demonstrated among students who represent almost two dozen countries. You are receiving this Bits & Bytes newsletter following the electronic publication of the mid term reports. By this time, the recipient has a formal picture of the progress of the student. This is an important time in the semester as we are at week 8 of the 15 weeks – at the 55% stage of learning and achievement. Upcoming this month are an English 12 Provincial Exam sitting on June 24 and the Numeracy Assessment from June 21 to 27.  We look forward to meeting with everyone at the Parent / Teacher night on June 20. Sincerely, Daniel Chowne, Principal. _______________ _______________
  • 4. BITS AND BYTES | PAGE 04 pattisonhighschool.ca Counsellor's Corner BY CAROLE MORAN "The most creative act you will ever undertake is the act of creating yourself." Deepak Chopra _______________ _______________ As I write this, we are now more than halfway through this sunny Spring 2019 semester at Pattison High School.  Over the past 8 ½ weeks, since we started at the end of April, our students have been working and studying hard with the guidance of our outstanding teaching faculty. Now, students and parents alike are eagerly anticipating the midterm grade report cards.  Within the counselling office, our Grade 12 students are finalizing their details for University/College for their exciting starts in September or January, and now our Grade 11 students are excitedly coming by to discuss their post-secondary goals! It is indeed a very exciting time of year. Beyond academics, I also rejoice in seeing new friendships grow within our beautiful international student population.  Some of these friendships have developed through classroom work and shared goals, and also through our many various clubs and activities. This week alone will be a busy one, as we prepare to greet and welcome all parents, guardians and custodians at our Parent/Teacher night Thursday. We were all delighted to enjoy the past "Welcome Back to School" BBQ event and our Student Government has been busy preparing for every occasion that is upcoming, including our Canada Day BBQ on June 28th! I also had the joy of watching and listening to all of our Pattison High School students taking the time to write a  “Canada Quiz” in anticipation of adding more Provincial House points to their tally. That was a lot of fun!  July will bring more fun and activities. We will all head up to the top of Grouse Mountain for the day on July 5th! Some will be zip-lining, some challenging themselves to the Adventure Rope course high in the trees, while others will be discovering the mountain top! We can’t wait! Moreover, July also will bring our amazing Private Yacht Cruise for our fabulous grads, guests, and Prom attendees. The details are still developing, but I can feel the excitement building. July also brings the development of careful and thoughtful planning for the next semester of Fall 2019.  I will be meeting with all students to discuss their upcoming semester and their Graduation Plans. I immensely enjoy sharing in all the enthusiasm, energy, and passion that our students bring to our school and bring to my office.  I share in their successes as well as their struggles, and have had the pleasure and honour of their stories.  I wish all our students the best over the remainder of this Spring 2019 semester and their future pursuits; both academically and socially.

  • 12. BITS AND BYTES | PAGE 12 pattisonhighschool.ca The Student Council The Student Council at Pattison High School invites students to gain experience in administrative and parliamentary procedure, group planning and cooperation, along with planning events, providing peer mentorship and collaborative experiences. This type of activity is intended to prepare students for joining student clubs, along with student governments, at the university level. During the Winter 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized and hosted the extremely popular "Break the Rules Day" for general fundraising, while designing and coordinating a St. Patrick's day event (with some help from Ms.Egan!). Futhermore, in perhaps their most ambitious project to date; the Student Council helped consolidate Pattison High School's graduation prom, with Ms.Moran, at the Vancouver Art Gallery Law house. So far during the Spring 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized a welcome-back-to school BBQ and are planning Canada Day Celebrations. If anyone is ever interested in joining the Student's Council to earn volunteer hours and professional development evidence (an in-demand university asset), they are encouraged to come join the Student Council! _______________

  • 17. Science & Fun BITS AND BYTES | PAGE 17 pattisonhighschool.ca Natural science is the study of the world around us, and is composed of biological sciences and physical sciences. It is both a body of existing knowledge, and the process of acquiring new knowledge through observation and experimentation. As a consequence, science is always evolving as new discoveries are made. In Science 10, we investigate topics such as genetics and how DNA affects traits and heredity, chemical reactions and energy transfers and how they affect our lives, as well as astronomy and how technology has helped expand our understanding of the universe. As much as possible, hands-on activities and videos will help students gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in. To discuss enrollment, talk to Mr. Vandervelde or Ms. Moran.

The atmosphere is very friendly and the staffs and students are really supportive. Meeting people from other countries is another thing that I like about PHS. I have learned a lot about different cultures and languages. I made new friends, and I created lots of beautiful memories with them. When I first came to PHS, I was worried about the new environment, but my teachers and friends helped me to be strong and confident. PHS made me ready for my future. Thanks PHS for everything. ” Graduate Student Testimonials_______________ "Pattison is definitely an educational institution that has successfully defined and carried out its mission statement; "We don't teach a class, we teach individual students in a class."
