This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

"It is not a question of starting. The
start has been made. It's a question of
what's to be done from now on."
B.F. Skinner
This is exactly how we like it: It is another
spectacular Spring in Vancouver and we are,
as always, enjoying the beautiful setting of
the school and its ‘heart of the downtown’
location. We look around us and we see a
profusion of greenery and colourful
plantings.
At the same time, our thoughts turn to the
importance of the transition from the 2018-
2019 to the 2019-2020 academic year in BC
education. In the following months, we
embark upon the final year of curriculum
evolution that has led us from the focus on
content and data [in the Graduation
Program 2004] to the focus on collaborative
inquiry, research, First Nations principles of
learning, and self/peer assessment [in the
Graduation Program 2018]. These are
exciting times as the high school program
becomes increasingly inclusive of
methodologies to promote individual
students' exploration of the academic world.
In addition to the academic work that is our
major focus every day, there is a great deal
of extra-curricular energy that we enjoy.
Through either participation, or observation,
we see clubs in action, community services in
effect, and our diverse population of students
enjoying each others’ company.
Administrative staff and teachers are pleased
with the care and support that is
demonstrated among students who represent
almost two dozen countries. You are receiving
this Bits & Bytes newsletter following the
electronic publication of the mid term reports.
By this time, the recipient has a formal
picture of the progress of the student. This is
an important time in the semester as we are
at week 8 of the 15 weeks – at the 55% stage of
learning and achievement.
Upcoming this month are an English 12
Provincial Exam sitting on June 24 and the
Numeracy Assessment from June 21 to 27.
We look forward to meeting with everyone at
the Parent / Teacher night on June 20.
Sincerely,
Daniel Chowne,
Principal.

_______________
As I write this, we are now more than halfway
through this sunny Spring 2019 semester at
Pattison High School. Over the past 8 ½ weeks,
since we started at the end of April, our students
have been working and studying hard with the
guidance of our outstanding teaching faculty.
Now, students and parents alike are eagerly
anticipating the midterm grade report cards.
Within the counselling office, our Grade 12
students are finalizing their details for
University/College for their exciting starts in
September or January, and now our Grade 11
students are excitedly coming by to discuss their
post-secondary goals! It is indeed a very exciting
time of year.
Beyond academics, I also rejoice in seeing new
friendships grow within our beautiful
international student population. Some of these
friendships have developed through classroom
work and shared goals, and also through our
many various clubs and activities. This week
alone will be a busy one, as we prepare to greet
and welcome all parents, guardians and
custodians at our Parent/Teacher night
Thursday.
We were all delighted to enjoy the past "Welcome
Back to School" BBQ event and our Student
Government has been busy preparing for every
occasion that is upcoming, including our
Canada Day BBQ on June 28th! I also had the joy of
watching and listening to all of our Pattison High
School students taking the time to write a “Canada
Quiz” in anticipation of adding more Provincial
House points to their tally. That was a lot of fun!
July will bring more fun and activities. We will all
head up to the top of Grouse Mountain for the day
on July 5th! Some will be zip-lining, some
challenging themselves to the Adventure Rope
course high in the trees, while others will be
discovering the mountain top! We can’t wait!
Moreover, July also will bring our amazing Private
Yacht Cruise for our fabulous grads, guests, and
Prom attendees. The details are still developing,
but I can feel the excitement building.
July also brings the development of careful and
thoughtful planning for the next semester of Fall
2019. I will be meeting with all students to discuss
their upcoming semester and their Graduation
Plans. I immensely enjoy sharing in all the
enthusiasm, energy, and passion that our students
bring to our school and bring to my office. I share
in their successes as well as their struggles, and
have had the pleasure and honour of their stories.
I wish all our students the best over the remainder
of this Spring 2019 semester and their future
pursuits; both academically and socially.

The Student Council
The Student Council at Pattison High School invites students to gain
experience in administrative and parliamentary procedure, group planning
and cooperation, along with planning events, providing peer mentorship and
collaborative experiences. This type of activity is intended to prepare
students for joining student clubs, along with student governments, at the
university level.
During the Winter 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized and hosted
the extremely popular "Break the Rules Day" for general fundraising, while
designing and coordinating a St. Patrick's day event (with some help from
Ms.Egan!). Futhermore, in perhaps their most ambitious project to date; the
Student Council helped consolidate Pattison High School's graduation prom,
with Ms.Moran, at the Vancouver Art Gallery Law house.
So far during the Spring 2019 Semester, the Student Council organized a
welcome-back-to school BBQ and are planning Canada Day Celebrations. If
anyone is ever interested in joining the Student's Council to earn volunteer
hours and professional development evidence (an in-demand university
asset), they are encouraged to come join the Student Council!

Natural science is the study of the world around us, and is composed of
biological sciences and physical sciences. It is both a body of existing
knowledge, and the process of acquiring new knowledge through
observation and experimentation. As a consequence, science is always
evolving as new discoveries are made.
In Science 10, we investigate topics such as genetics and how DNA affects
traits and heredity, chemical reactions and energy transfers and how they
affect our lives, as well as astronomy and how technology has helped
