Frank*“During the day, I was a loving family man,
but at night, I was dealing drugs and was my
own biggest customer,” recalled Frank. “I would come home from
a long night only to take the kids to school and practice. Leading
two lives eventually took a toll on me.”
It was at his lowest point that Frank realized he needed to reach
out. “I lost my marriage, my relationship with my children was
strained and I wasn’t sleeping,” stated Frank. “I remember picking
up the phone and calling my parents.” That was when he and
his parents learned about SPIRITT Family Services, a community
resource for substance abuse treatment. It was at SPIRITT Family
Services that he met Irene Sanchez, his counselor.
“One question Irene would often ask me was, ‘Who was I before
I started using,’” said Frank. “I was unable to answer that at first,

but with the support of Irene
and SPIRITT, I was able to start
answering that question for
myself. Nine years later, I
remember that and it keeps me
going.” Frank rediscovered himself
and learned to manage life’s
struggles in healthier ways. Frank
has been on his journey of sobri-ety
for nine years now. Earlier this
year, Frank visited SPIRITT to thank
his counselor, Irene (who is now
retired), and to invite her to his
wedding to his childhood
sweetheart.

Agatha* When Agatha was referred to SPIRITT’s
CARIÑO Partnerships for Families Program
(CARIÑO PFF), she felt overwhelmed and frightened. Agatha
was new to the San Gabriel Valley, had become a single mom and
had recently been laid off. Adding to her stress was an allegation
of child abuse reported to LA County Department of Children and
Family Services for disciplining her school-age child.
“I was so frightened, but my in-home counselor did a great job
of putting my mind at rest,” said Agatha. “Cassy [her counselor] came
over to the house to meet the family. Together, we worked on
developing positive ways to discipline my children and on building
my support network for when I am feeling overwhelmed again.”
On a regular basis, in-home counselor, Cassy, would visit with the
family to provide encouragement to mom and to build resiliency by
serving as an extra support for the family. As part of her individual-ized
family treatment plan, Agatha was connected to the Incredible

Giovanni*While preparing to address the
high school students at SPIRITT
Family Services’ annual CHOICES Youth Conference, Giovanni
remembered his behavior and desire to fit in his sophomore
year of high school. “I was a good student until I started getting
involved with drugs and partying,” recalled Giovanni. “When I
was getting in trouble at school, at home and with the courts,
it was namely because I was missing direction.”
Giovanni’s probation officer (PO) started connecting him with
resources in the community, like SPIRITT Family Services. “My PO
suggested I enroll in the CLARO Program for Young Men. After
signing up for CLARO, my counselor, Frankie, suggested mom
and I participate in WINDOWS Family Communication Program”
After completing three of the seven nights of the WINDOWS,
Giovanni started noticing a significant difference in his

interaction with his mom. “We
were talking to each other for the
first time in a while. Listening to
mom really made the difference
in helping us understand one
another and grow closer together.”
Today, Giovanni is working as a
Pharmacy Technician. He credits
his PO, his SPIRITT Family Services
counselor, Frankie, and his peer
support network at CLARO for the
encouragement and reinforcement
to take bold steps in his path.
