people build their own confidence, find their
own solutions, and feel secure in the choices
they make. It’s okay to stumble with friends,
family and support by your side.

Dear Friends:
On behalf of SPIRITT Family Services and the

Frank*“During the day, I was a loving family man,
but at night, I was dealing drugs and was my
own biggest customer,” recalled Frank. “I would come home from
a long night only to take the kids to school and practice. Leading
two lives eventually took a toll on me.”
It was at his lowest point that Frank realized he needed to reach
out. “I lost my marriage, my relationship with my children was
strained and I wasn’t sleeping,” stated Frank. “I remember picking
up the phone and calling my parents.” That was when he and
his parents learned about SPIRITT Family Services, a community
resource for substance abuse treatment. It was at SPIRITT Family
Services that he met Irene Sanchez, his counselor.
“One question Irene would often ask me was, ‘Who was I before
I started using,’” said Frank. “I was unable to answer that at first,
“During the day,
I was a loving family
man, but at night,
I was dealing drugs
and was my own
biggest customer.”
SPIRITT Services
but with the support of Irene
and SPIRITT, I was able to start
answering that question for
myself. Nine years later, I
remember that and it keeps me
going.” Frank rediscovered himself
and learned to manage life’s
struggles in healthier ways. Frank
has been on his journey of sobri-ety
for nine years now. Earlier this
year, Frank visited SPIRITT to thank
his counselor, Irene (who is now
retired), and to invite her to his
wedding to his childhood
sweetheart.

Agatha* When Agatha was referred to SPIRITT’s
CARIÑO Partnerships for Families Program
(CARIÑO PFF), she felt overwhelmed and frightened. Agatha
was new to the San Gabriel Valley, had become a single mom and
had recently been laid off. Adding to her stress was an allegation
of child abuse reported to LA County Department of Children and
Family Services for disciplining her school-age child.
“I was so frightened, but my in-home counselor did a great job
of putting my mind at rest,” said Agatha. “Cassy [her counselor] came
over to the house to meet the family. Together, we worked on
developing positive ways to discipline my children and on building
my support network for when I am feeling overwhelmed again.”
On a regular basis, in-home counselor, Cassy, would visit with the
family to provide encouragement to mom and to build resiliency by
serving as an extra support for the family. As part of her individual-ized
family treatment plan, Agatha was connected to the Incredible
“I have new tools to
turn to for support. I
am very grateful to
Cassy and SPIRITT for
helping our family grow
stronger together.”
SPIRITT Services Impact
Years Parenting Class where she
learned new parenting skills and
met others who were also seeking
family support. Additionally,
Agatha and her children were
connected to local community
resources for basic needs like diapers,
provided through a partnership
with LA Diaper Drive.
Today, Agatha and her family
graduated, having met all of their
individualized family goals. “I have
new tools to turn to for support,”
declared Agatha. “I am very grateful
to Cassy and SPIRITT for helping our
family grow stronger together.”

Giovanni*While preparing to address the
high school students at SPIRITT
Family Services’ annual CHOICES Youth Conference, Giovanni
remembered his behavior and desire to fit in his sophomore
year of high school. “I was a good student until I started getting
involved with drugs and partying,” recalled Giovanni. “When I
was getting in trouble at school, at home and with the courts,
it was namely because I was missing direction.”
Giovanni’s probation officer (PO) started connecting him with
resources in the community, like SPIRITT Family Services. “My PO
suggested I enroll in the CLARO Program for Young Men. After
signing up for CLARO, my counselor, Frankie, suggested mom
and I participate in WINDOWS Family Communication Program”
After completing three of the seven nights of the WINDOWS,
Giovanni started noticing a significant difference in his

interaction with his mom. “We
were talking to each other for the
first time in a while. Listening to
mom really made the difference
in helping us understand one
another and grow closer together.”
Today, Giovanni is working as a
Pharmacy Technician. He credits
his PO, his SPIRITT Family Services
counselor, Frankie, and his peer
support network at CLARO for the
encouragement and reinforcement
to take bold steps in his path.

  • 4. 4 Frank*“During the day, I was a loving family man, but at night, I was dealing drugs and was my own biggest customer,” recalled Frank. “I would come home from a long night only to take the kids to school and practice. Leading two lives eventually took a toll on me.” It was at his lowest point that Frank realized he needed to reach out. “I lost my marriage, my relationship with my children was strained and I wasn’t sleeping,” stated Frank. “I remember picking up the phone and calling my parents.” That was when he and his parents learned about SPIRITT Family Services, a community resource for substance abuse treatment. It was at SPIRITT Family Services that he met Irene Sanchez, his counselor. “One question Irene would often ask me was, ‘Who was I before I started using,’” said Frank. “I was unable to answer that at first, “During the day, I was a loving family man, but at night, I was dealing drugs and was my own biggest customer.” SPIRITT Services but with the support of Irene and SPIRITT, I was able to start answering that question for myself. Nine years later, I remember that and it keeps me going.” Frank rediscovered himself and learned to manage life’s struggles in healthier ways. Frank has been on his journey of sobri-ety for nine years now. Earlier this year, Frank visited SPIRITT to thank his counselor, Irene (who is now retired), and to invite her to his wedding to his childhood sweetheart. * not client’s actual name Behavioral Well-being Key Essential Youth Support (KEYS) Mental health prevention and treatment services for children exhibiting emotional and behavioral problems and support for their families. • 5. 5 Agatha* When Agatha was referred to SPIRITT’s CARIÑO Partnerships for Families Program (CARIÑO PFF), she felt overwhelmed and frightened. Agatha was new to the San Gabriel Valley, had become a single mom and had recently been laid off. Adding to her stress was an allegation of child abuse reported to LA County Department of Children and Family Services for disciplining her school-age child. “I was so frightened, but my in-home counselor did a great job of putting my mind at rest,” said Agatha. “Cassy [her counselor] came over to the house to meet the family. Together, we worked on developing positive ways to discipline my children and on building my support network for when I am feeling overwhelmed again.” On a regular basis, in-home counselor, Cassy, would visit with the family to provide encouragement to mom and to build resiliency by serving as an extra support for the family. As part of her individual-ized family treatment plan, Agatha was connected to the Incredible “I have new tools to turn to for support. I am very grateful to Cassy and SPIRITT for helping our family grow stronger together.” SPIRITT Services Impact Years Parenting Class where she learned new parenting skills and met others who were also seeking family support. Additionally, Agatha and her children were connected to local community resources for basic needs like diapers, provided through a partnership with LA Diaper Drive. Today, Agatha and her family graduated, having met all of their individualized family goals. “I have new tools to turn to for support,” declared Agatha. “I am very grateful to Cassy and SPIRITT for helping our family grow stronger together.” * not client’s actual name In Home Services Improvement in Family Functioning: • Living Conditions Cleanliness/Orderliness and Safety – Outside Environmental Conditions and Outside/Inside Home Maintenance • Supports to Caregivers Available Child care and Health Care • Developmental Stimulation Appropriate Play Area/Things – Inside Home and Provides Enriching/Learning Experiences for Child(ren) • Interactions Between Caregivers Conjoint Problem Solving Ability and Manner of Dealing with Conflict/Stress Family Resiliency Child Abuse Risk Intervention and Neighborhood Outreach Partnerships for Family (CARIÑO PFF) Child abuse prevention program. • 6. 6 Giovanni*While preparing to address the high school students at SPIRITT Family Services’ annual CHOICES Youth Conference, Giovanni remembered his behavior and desire to fit in his sophomore year of high school. “I was a good student until I started getting involved with drugs and partying,” recalled Giovanni. “When I was getting in trouble at school, at home and with the courts, it was namely because I was missing direction.” Giovanni’s probation officer (PO) started connecting him with resources in the community, like SPIRITT Family Services. “My PO suggested I enroll in the CLARO Program for Young Men. After signing up for CLARO, my counselor, Frankie, suggested mom and I participate in WINDOWS Family Communication Program” After completing three of the seven nights of the WINDOWS, Giovanni started noticing a significant difference in his “Listening to mom really made the difference in helping us understand one another and grow closer together.” SPIRITT Services interaction with his mom. “We were talking to each other for the first time in a while. Listening to mom really made the difference in helping us understand one another and grow closer together.” Today, Giovanni is working as a Pharmacy Technician. He credits his PO, his SPIRITT Family Services counselor, Frankie, and his peer support network at CLARO for the encouragement and reinforcement to take bold steps in his path. * not client’s actual name CLARO Youth Services • Fifty-five percent of CLARO participants reported living in a single parent household; • Seventeen percent reported to being held in either a juvenile detention, residential treatment, or another secure facility; and • Eight percent reported being removed from home by a social worker or police officer.
