• Distinct variations or forms of the
language used for the same purpose
by a particular situation of the form of
language that the speaker uses.
• This is characterized by the degree of
formality
7. Intimate
• Non-public Speech Style That
uses private Vocabulary and
includes nonverbal messages.
• Meaning is shared even without
“correct linguistic forms”
• Occurs among people who have
known each other for a long time
and have shared many
experiences.
8. Casual
• Used among friends and
acquaintances that do not
require background
information.
• Used when no social barriers
occur (Culture of the
community)
9. Consultative
• The opposite of intimate style
• This is used among people who
do not share common
experiences or meaning.
• Requires two-way participation
and interruptions can occur
during communication.
10. Formal
• Used only for imparting
information.
• The speech is well-organized
and correct in grammar and
diction.
• Straightforward and direct,
with no circumlocution.
Does not allow interruptions.

• A formal style whose quality is
static, ritualistic, and may even
be archaic.
