ISCRAM 2009 Conference for the Human-Computer Interaction track on Interactive Map Technologies session Abstract: Developments in information and communication technology (ICT) have adjusted the opportunities for spatial and temporal representations of data, possibly permitting the simultaneous visualization of how different regions and populations are affected during large-scale emergencies and crises. We surveyed 13 crisis-related mashups to derive some high-level design directions to guide the design and testing of next generation crisis support tools. The current web mashups offer a new way of looking at how crises are spatiotemporally ordered. However, since all technology is constrained by limitations of design choice, examining the limits and possibilities of what current design choices afford can inform attributes of what next generation crisis support tools would require.

Bayesian Model Fusion for Forecasting Civil Unrest
Abstract: With the rapid rise in social media, alternative news sources, and blogs, ordinary citizens have become information producers as much as information consumers. Highly charged prose, images, and videos spread virally, and stoke the embers of social unrest by alerting fellow citizens to relevant happenings and
spurring them into action. We are interested in using Big Data approaches to generate forecasts of civil unrest from open source indicators. The heterogenous nature of data coupled with the rich and diverse origins of civil unrest call for a multi-model approach to such forecasting. We present a modular approach wherein a collection of models use overlapping sources of data to independently forecast protests. Fusion of alerts into one single alert stream becomes a key system informatics problem and we present a statistical framework to accomplish such fusion. Given an alert from one of the numerous models, the decision space
for fusion has two possibilities: (i) release the alert or (ii) suppress the alert. Using a Bayesian decision theoretical framework, we present a fusion approach for releasing or suppressing alerts. The resulting system enables real-time decisions and more importantly tuning of precision and recall. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.

GIS 2.0: Impacts on Humanitarian Affairs and Genocide Studies
This document summarizes a guest lecture on how GIS 2.0 impacts humanitarian affairs and genocide studies. GIS 2.0 is defined as incorporating web 2.0 principles of openness, collective intelligence and network effects into geographic information systems. This allows for ubiquitous communication through wireless networks and cloud computing. Examples are given of how crowdsourcing through OpenStreetMap helped relief efforts in Haiti, and how virtual globes like Google Earth can integrate qualitative and quantitative data to study issues like genocide. The place matters. We were born there, have been living and working there, entered there and exited from there. Places are an object of observation from the outside while we experience them from the inside. A place is the most ethnographic level of observation of relational territorialisation.
However, do we really know how territories behave? Can we really observe in practise the notion of the Network Territory? How does the dynamic concept of a territory fit and juxtapose with that of a network?
Some territories are putting all their efforts, thanks to the common work of public, private, and civil agents, into restructuring the post-crisis economic and social system. Nevertheless, can we observe and see what is occurring in these places and territories? How are we supposed to observe those big black boxes with input and output but with an unknown and hardly explainable process? How can we apply hermeneutics to the socially innovating processes in the networked territories at any scale? What tools should we use for this observation? What tools do we want and can we use to intervene? What effect do we ultimately want to have?
All these elements may demand a systemic vision in the cybernetic multi-disciplinary sense that Social Innovation requires and that links with the two main currents of Social Innovation in a coherent way: we are referring to, on the one hand, the more academic approach, with a social justice dimension, aligned towards the Territory and Social Economy and, on the other hand, the more practitioner and policy-making approach, championed by the third-way labour school of thought of the Young Foundation, Nesta and Demos.
This publication is thus to suggest taking a step back to achieve some impulse and present a Territory Systemic Framework from Social Innovation. We mixed elements from
Action Research as a suggestion for the investigation methodology, the way to observe the Territory from the viewpoint or paradigm of Social Innovation. That is to say that we de-constructe the Territory into three scales (#Macro, #Meso and #Micro) to be able to observe, understand, and implement social transformations. What we know now is that the future of Territories is currently determined by two variables: their network-notion and their value of commons. The Territories that are able to mingle with the collective intelligence that is strategically aligned with the understanding of the Territory-Network and Common Welfare will be in a better position to undertake some real processes of Social Innovation within themselves. Which policies, projects, and agents/people should be promoted within the Territories?
And what role do creative atmospheres or ecosystems play?
Let us then answer three questions:
What? Why? How? That is to say, Territory, Social Innovation, and Action Research.Where can tell me who I am?

Examples are given of how crowdsourcing through OpenStreetMap helped relief efforts in Haiti, and how virtual globes like Google Earth can integrate qualitative and quantitative data to study issues like genocide. The conclusion is that GIS 2.0 provides a framework to better understand humanitarian crises by combining different data sources.

The place matters. We were born there, have been living and working there, entered there and exited from there. Places are an object of observation from the outside while we experience them from the inside. A place is the most ethnographic level of observation of relational territorialisation.
However, do we really know how territories behave? Can we really observe in practise the notion of the Network Territory? How does the dynamic concept of a territory fit and juxtapose with that of a network?
Some territories are putting all their efforts, thanks to the common work of public, private, and civil agents, into restructuring the post-crisis economic and social system. Nevertheless, can we observe and see what is occurring in these places and territories? How are we supposed to observe those big black boxes with input and output but with an unknown and hardly explainable process? How can we apply hermeneutics to the socially innovating processes in the networked territories at any scale? What tools should we use for this observation? What tools do we want and can we use to intervene? What effect do we ultimately want to have?
All these elements may demand a systemic vision in the cybernetic multi-disciplinary sense that Social Innovation requires and that links with the two main currents of Social Innovation in a coherent way: we are referring to, on the one hand, the more academic approach, with a social justice dimension, aligned towards the Territory and Social Economy and, on the other hand, the more practitioner and policy-making approach, championed by the third-way labour school of thought of the Young Foundation, Nesta and Demos.
This publication is thus to suggest taking a step back to achieve some impulse and present a Territory Systemic Framework from Social Innovation. We mixed elements from
Action Research as a suggestion for the investigation methodology, the way to observe the Territory from the viewpoint or paradigm of Social Innovation. That is to say that we de-constructe the Territory into three scales (#Macro, #Meso and #Micro) to be able to observe, understand, and implement social transformations. What we know now is that the future of Territories is currently determined by two variables: their network-notion and their value of commons. The Territories that are able to mingle with the collective intelligence that is strategically aligned with the understanding of the Territory-Network and Common Welfare will be in a better position to undertake some real processes of Social Innovation within themselves. Which policies, projects, and agents/people should be promoted within the Territories?
And what role do creative atmospheres or ecosystems play?
Let us then answer three questions:
What? Why? How? That is to say, Territory, Social Innovation, and Action Research.Where can tell me who I am?

However, we point out that modern fears about the dangers of social networking are overdone. The Learning Layers project is used to provide a case of barriers and possibilities for mobile learning; we report on extensive initial co-design work and significant barriers with respect to the design of a mobile Help Seeking tool for the Healthcare sector (UK). Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- People use the dimensions of time and place to explain how such a crisis develops to make sense of its impact on society. We all care about designing crisis support tools. Our research lab particularly cares about what technology does to our understanding of how crises play out in time and place. In my current research, I am not only interested in how to use this data in the immediate-term but also in the long-term. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest some design directions to help make sense of crisis data useful in the long-term.
