Spanish conquistadors, with the help of local allies, were able to conquer the powerful Inca Empire in Peru in the 16th century, gaining control over the entire Andean region by November 16, 1532. Separately, Hernan Cortes led Spanish forces that conquered the Mexica/Aztec empire between 1519-1521, establishing over 300 years of Spanish rule in Mexico, though the Yucatan Peninsula was under a different Mayan empire at the time.
