2. School of Planning and Architecture, DELHI:
FOUNDER:
 Walter George was the person who initiated the idea of establishing a School of Architecture in
Delhi. There were only two training schools for Architects, one in Mumbai and other in Baroda.
Walter George and his colleagues thus began the work of establishing the first school in Delhi.
 WW. Wood became the first principal of Delhi Polytechnic, Mr. Mirza became the first Head of
Department of Architecture. The first batch received their national diplomas in Architecture in
1950.
■ The seeds of Delhi Polytechnic were sowed by the Wood and Abott Committee of 1938. It was
established as Delhi Polytechnic in 1941. The technical school was created to cater to the
demands of Indian industries. At that time, Delhi Polytechnic offered courses in Arts,
Architecture, Commerce, Engineering, Applied Science and Textiles. Walter William Wood, the
father of technical education in India, became the founder Principal of Delhi Polytechnic.

CAMPUS OVERVIEW
Till 1993
• The SPA was one of the first institutions to have mixed hostels for girls and boys, but
this was closed in 1993, despite student protests.
Present
• The current SPA New Delhi campus is split in two blocks one each for Planning and
Architecture. Both these blocks are housed near ITO in Indraprastha Estate in New
Delhi.The girls hostel is located in the ITO campus itself and the boys hostel and
residential campus is located in New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh, Delhi.
Future
Extension
• The construction of a residential campus atTaimoor Nagar, New Friends Colony
commenced. It provided additional accommodation for students as well as housing
for the faculty and staff.The construction of New campus for the school atVasant
Kunj in South Delhi is under way.

 The School continues to undertake research in architecture and planning sectors. Important
research projects and activities include Indo Norway Research Project onTransport Sector
Strategies for Climate Change,Affordable Housing and Climate Change in Collaboration
with GermanTechnicalAssistance,Conservation of Mughal Riverfront Gardens Project of
Agra, Indo Highway Capacity Manual, HUDCO Chair and ENVIS Center on Human
Settlements.
International Exchanges
 The School has signed MOU with a large number of international Universities and
organizations. Several students and faculty from UK, USA,Australia, Germany, Columbia,
etc. visited the School. Notable amongst such exchanges are MOU with National
Architecture Institute (ENSAPLV), Paris,Architecture Students Exchange Program with
University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and Intensive Design Studio at RMIT University
Australia organized by faculty members of SPA New Delhi.
