2. WHITTLE, FOUNDER ~AN INTRODUCTION
After an upbringing visiting exotic destinations around the world, a fascination for travel was
born. Whittle has been inspired by over 20 years of journeying and discovery to more than
30 countries. During this time countless challenges were faced while encountering and
embracing many exciting and diverse cultures.
Whittle’s extraordinary path encouraged a creative spirit, helping to develop a unique style
and breadth of skills. Her natural curiosity extended to an interest in global healing practices
and she has gained in-depth knowledge from many wise and remarkable teachers including
African sangomas, Indian sadus and tribal elders of the South Pacific.
A qualified natural health therapist with ITEC accreditation, experienced in a range of luxury
health and beauty techniques, she opened the Natural Health Centre in Zanzibar, East Africa
in 1997. This beautiful spa reflects Whittle’s passion for developing spaces of relaxation and
restoration. It is located within the ancient Arabic ruins of a sultans palace in a boutique
hotel offering a selection of massages, tropical facials, meditation and chi kung.
After a move to Southern Africa, Whittle joined the Asia based Amanresorts and undertook
extensive training at the multi award winning Aman Spa at Amanpuri in Phuket. Following
this she oversaw, from conception to the successful management of operations, The Baths
at Amangalla in Sri Lanka. This spa is set within a landmark historic building and has been
named on Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List and nominated in AsiaSpa crystal awards for
consecutive years.
Following two memorable years in Sri Lanka, which included surviving the Asian tsunami,
Whittle was invited to improve and refine spa operations at Amanjena in Morocco. Focusing
on defining the overall guest experience, she established the high standards set by Aman’s
core service philosophy. Research and intense training of the therapist team allowed
Amanjena to enrich delivery of its indigenous therapies, based on traditional, authentic
Moroccan body care including the legendary Hammam experience. This has consequently
produced a significant increase in revenue.
More recently she assisted in the development of Quan Spas, a new in house brand for JW,
Marriott and Renaissance hotels within the Asia Pacific region. Working and living in China,
emerging as one of the world’s most competitive spa markets, this experience saw Whittle
manage projects from concept and preopening stages to operations.
She was responsible for ensuring brand consistency and standards, full coordination and
implementation of skills and service training, developing treatment menus and standard
operating procedures, local and international product selection, full spa procurement, spa
design and equipment installation advisory and guiding marketing initiatives.
