The document discusses collaboration between cardiology and neurology experts at Mills-Peninsula Hospital to better understand and treat strokes. Atrial fibrillation, a heart arrhythmia, can double the risk of heart-related death and increase stroke risk five-fold. However, the arrhythmia isn't always present when patients are evaluated for stroke. By working together, cardiologists and neurologists can gain a more complete picture of the relationship between heart issues like AFib and strokes, in order to provide the best care. The hospital is focused on detecting diseases that may cause devastating consequences through new technology and integration between medical specialties.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Regular screening can reduce the risk of death from colon cancer by 33% as it allows early detection and removal of pre-cancerous polyps. Dr. Rajiv Datta of the Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center specializes in colon cancer surgery using minimally invasive techniques when possible and advocates for regular screening colonoscopies. Follow-up care after treatment including physical exams, colonoscopies, and CEA blood tests is important to monitor for recurrence of colon cancer.
Two of Long Island's most accomplished business leaders, Butch Yamali and Wayne Lipton, have been designated co-honorees of South Nassau Communities Hospital's 32nd Annual Golf Outing to be held Monday, June 13.
The document discusses laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. It notes several problems with existing studies including historical controls, selection bias, and unclear definitions of laparoscopic procedures. Randomized controlled trials like the Barcelona trial and COLOR study found no differences in short-term outcomes or long-term survival between laparoscopic and open surgery. While laparoscopic surgery may be done outside of trials, open surgery remains valid and selection bias is a limitation since only a minority of patients are included in trials. Further randomized studies are still needed, especially for rectal cancer where open surgery may have advantages for low anastomoses or T4 tumors.
South Nassau Communities Hospital is taking this action so that there will be no disruption of residents’ access of hospital-quality urgent medical care while expediting a $5 million expansion and upgrade of the center to a 24/7 OCHBED.
The document discusses new surgical modalities for treating colon and rectal cancers, including laparoscopic, robotic, and single incision approaches. It describes various procedures like colectomies and anastomoses and how minimally invasive techniques can provide benefits like shorter recovery time compared to open surgery. The document also outlines innovations in instruments and techniques that are expanding the types of surgeries that can be performed laparoscopically.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

South Nassau Appoints Joel Schneider As Chair of Its Emergency Department Expansion
Capital Fundraising Campaign
Oceanside, NY… South Nassau Communities Hospital has named Joel Schneider – a local real estate
developer and owner of a real estate company – as Chairman of its five-year, $10 million Capital Campaign to
help fund a $60 million renovation and expansion of the hospital’s emergency services department.
Mr. Schneider is a member of South Nassau’s Board of Directors and a member of the hospital’s
building committee who has been active in raising funds for the Emergency Department expansion, which will
nearly double the size of the hospital’s Oceanside Emergency Department to accommodate a projected 70,000
visits a year.
“There is no one more qualified and committed to take on the task of campaign chair than Joel
Schneider,” said Richard J. Murphy, president and CEO. “He is a natural and enthusiastic leader who is well
respected and well-known in the business and civic communities along the South Shore. He shares a passion for
expanding South Nassau’s ability to provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare services.”
“Since being named a member of the hospital’s board of directors, Joel has been deeply committed to
ensuring that South Nassau provides the highest quality emergency medical services to the people and
communities of the south shore of Nassau County,” added Joseph J. Fennessy, Chairman of South Nassau’s
Board of Directors. “He has the undivided support and commitment of his fellow board members to achieve the
goal of the campaign.”
As chair of the expansion campaign, Mr. Schneider will spearhead the prospecting and cultivation of
major donors and assist the hospital’s Development Office with the planning and execution of fund raising
strategies and initiatives. The capital campaign chair is a voluntary position.
“It is a great honor and privilege for me to serve South Nassau in this capacity,” said Mr. Schneider.
“South Nassau’s Emergency Department is the only Level II trauma center on the South Shore of Nassau
County and it was built to handle about 35,000 visits a year, so this renovation and expansion is sorely needed
2. and it will benefit all the communities the hospital serves along the South Shore – from the Rockaways to the
Massapequas. I am confident we will be able to reach our goal.”
The expansion project will increase the Emergency Department’s square footage from 16,000 to 30,000
square feet, increasing its overall size by 87% and giving it the necessary room to accommodate in excess of
80,000 patient visits each year as well as establishing dedicated areas for behavioral health, geriatric and
pediatric emergencies.

Schneider Management Corp. (JSMC), J. Schneider Group, LTD (The Schneider Group), and JS Restoration
