5. Trade Blocs
• MERCOSUR is a Regional Trade Agreement among
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay founded in
1991 by the Treaty of Asunció n, which was later
amended and updated by the 1994 Treaty of Ouro Preto.
Its purpose is to promote free trade and the fluid
movement of goods, people, and currency.
• Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru currently
have associate member status. Venezuela signed a
membership agreement on 17 June 2006.

6. Trade Blocs
• The Andean Community is bloc formed by Bolivia,
Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The trade bloc was called
the Andean Pact until 1996 and came into existence with
the signing of the Cartagena Agreement in 1969. Its
headquarters are located in Lima, Peru.
• The Andean Community has 98 million inhabitants living
in an area of 4,700,000 square kilometers, whose Gross
Domestic Product amounted to US$745.3 billion in 2005,
including Venezuela (who was a member at that time).

• Main commercial partner of Canada.
• In the last years consumption of beans have been
migrating to lentils.
• It is the largest importer of Lentils in South America.

• From 2002 there was a mayor intervention from the
government (La Casa / PDVSA) in the import purchase
and less participation of private sector.
• Basically is not producer of any pulses.

• In the past years was an important exporter of pulses

• Not pulses consumer country, mainly exports all its
production.
• It could be considered the main “Canadian competitor” in
Latin America for its neighborhood countries (Mercosul
participants).
• Main exporter of pulses in South America.

• First largest population of Latin America (191.908 million
people).
• Second largest world bean producer (first is India) with
about 3.5 million MT/year production. Main varieties:
carioca, black, jalo, engopa, rajado, etc…
• First largest world consumer per capita of beans.
