ICE CREAM, AGILE, AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGETonya McCarley
This talk was for Thomson Reuters Beyond the Edge Conference in September 2014. The talk is a case study using agile task boards within an organization to demonstrate how agile can be adapted across and organization.
This presentation shares a perspective on how Enterprises are succeeding at DevOps based on observations gained through collaborating with leaders across many companies.
Overview of Confluence and its features and how it is useful for enterprises. Updated with new social features in Confluence 3.0 and SharePoint Integration
We are excited to show you the Berkeley Board Fellows Kickoff Event slides. This is an opportunity for Board Fellows and Board Mentors to meet one another, hear from current and past program participants, learn best practices and ask questions.
Visual hierarchy is a cornerstone for all design disciplines and describes how humans interact and perceive content across all mediums. As digital designers, it is our responsibility to design interfaces and experiences that help communicate the content our users are looking for. Mobile screens present unique challenges to applying visual hierarchy concepts, especially when viewed through the lens of responsive design and progressive enhancement. This presentation will explore tactics that can be employed to help bridge the gap between design constraint and content priority, as well as discuss the role visual hierarchy should play when designing for all digital screens.
Building SharePoint Enterprise Platforms - Off the beaten pathAndy Talbot
To point and click our way through a SharePoint installation is relatively easy, but what about all the other 'stuff' that we might not have considered? These slides are from Andy Talbot's MetaVis webinar for a detailed discussion on building SharePoint platforms fit for enterprise customers.
In this webinar, Andy talked about some of the common challenges that can take some enterprises by surprise, factors that we should have planned for, and common failure points. Attendees should have benefited from this discussion regardless if they were starting out with their deployment, or already in production.

In today's work environment, career can be an ambiguous thing. Yet, employees still want to know if they have a future with their company, and if the company is committed to their future development.
Meanwhile, managers shy away from the topic of career, as changes in the organization and a lack of clear career options tend to make the conversation challenging.
Join us for this TrainingIndustry.com webinar, sponsored by GP Strategies, in reviewing recent research findings around career, discussing employee expectations and exploring how organizations can best support employees’ ambitions while also driving organizational performance.
As the picture of career evolves, so must our approaches to career management, and the attention we pay to culture and the tools we deploy.
During this webinar, Mary Ann Masarech, a lead consultant of the employee engagement practice at BlessingWhite, a GP Strategies division, provides easy-to-understand insights on:
•Why the concept of career is central to organizational performance
•What employees are looking for
•What organizations are doing to support career development
•What the most successful career development initiatives do and don’t do
Practical Strategies to Designing Engaging PortalsKanwal Khipple
No one starts a project with the intent of building an ugly intranet. We always have good intentions to build the best communication and collaboration portal the company has ever seen. We ensure that executives and end users are involved to design and implement from a portal based on their experience. What ends up happening? Portals are built with too many links to content or even stale content, images that take too long to load or are generic. You even had good intentions to leverage many features and perhaps some are even using it. What you typically find is that after the initial buzz of the launch, adoption fails. Why is that? If that sounds like what you recently went through, then attend this session to learn the strategies and implement them tomorrow. Learn the key principles in building innovative solutions that are simple but capture user’s attention and increase adoption.
By the end of the session, you’ll learn
How to get executives engaged early and ensuring they don’t get in the way
How to effectively run requirement gathering workshops that are not IT focused
What UX strategies are effective in delivering intuitive user experiences
And much more
This session will be filled with examples and there will be giveaways to those that share their own journey.

Public Speaking Tips to Help You Be A Strong Leader.pdfPinta Partners
In the realm of effective leadership, a multitude of skills come into play, but one stands out as both crucial and challenging: public speaking.
Public speaking transcends mere eloquence; it serves as the medium through which leaders articulate their vision, inspire action, and foster engagement. For leaders, refining public speaking skills is essential, elevating their ability to influence, persuade, and lead with resolute conviction. Here are some key tips to consider: https://joellandau.com/the-public-speaking-tips-to-help-you-be-a-stronger-leader/
The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.

15. Managers’ Strategies
“ What strategies have you employed to maintain a plateaued
employee as a productive member of your team? ”
• Frequent conversations with employee
• Provide mentoring
• Assign challenging tasks/projects
• Provide training and learning opportunities
• Keep plateaued employee involved in new projects
• Options to serve on committees
• Allow more autonomy
• Allow to lead small teams
• Don’t take plateaued employees for granted
ACM SIGUCCS FALL CONFERNCE 2014 November 7, 2014
16
16. Managers’ Perspective: Morale
“Do you encounter any issues with the morale of a plateaued
employee? Does this employee's attitude have any effect on the other
team members?”
Greater risk of problems if plateau is not by choice
[Employee’s] negative attitude serves as a barrier
to advancement
“Address attitude issue as soon as possible before
it affects the morale of the unit.”
ACM SIGUCCS FALL CONFERNCE 2014 November 7, 2014
17
17. Managers’ Quotes from Comments
“No manager wants to lose a good employee, but my
goal is to help people to grow and achieve their career
goals even though it may be detrimental to the unit for
which I am responsible.”
“There is a difference between a plateaued employee
and a difficult employee who is not willing to
participate or engage in becoming a productive member
of the team.”
“Employees who choose to stay in a position can make
that choice for good or bad reasons, just as employees
who want to progress may do so with good or bad
intentions to others. The manager must take an active
stance with all of the employees to keep them engaged,
productive, meeting the unit’s mission, and informed.”
ACM SIGUCCS FALL CONFERNCE 2014 November 7, 2014
18
18. Lessons Learned
• Those on a plateau not necessarily
less talented
• It is okay to not pursue promotions
• Invest in learning new skills
• Need to stay engaged and productive
• I am not alone

West Virginia University is the state’s land grant institution with about 30 thousand students and almost 6 thousand employees.
I work on the Advanced Support team in the Business Relationship & Customer Support unit of Information Technology Services. WVU uses a mixture of centralized support provided by ITS to the entire university and divisional campuses and decentralized support provided by departmental IT staff.
