4/7/2019 A beginner’s guide to hip-hop collective Native Tongues

Native Tongues 101
In the summer of 1988, two albums with eerily similar titles presented
radically different visions for the future of hip-hop. In August, NWA’s bomb
of a gangsta masterpiece, Straight Outta Compton, blew up the hip-hop
landscape, forever changing the posture, politics, and attitude of rap music
and rappers trying to be hardcore. But Straight Outta Compton was released just
a month after Straight Out The Jungle, the debut album from New York trio
Jungle Brothers and the first release from a future member of the Native
Tongues collective. Looking back, each album seems like a stylistic roadmap
for a different philosophy on the future of hip-hop: Where Straight Outta
Compton is aggressive and harsh and presents the members of NWA clad in
black Raiders Starter jackets, Straight Out The Jungle is as mellow and playful
as the ridiculous, endearing khaki safari gear Jungle Brothers wear on the
cover.
The image of Jungle Brothers looking unabashedly goofy while rhyming about
Afrocentric medallions and the difficulties of urban life in the late ’80s is
characteristic of the movement they spawned: Native Tongues. A loosely
affiliated crew composed of three founding groups (Jungle Brothers, De La
Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest) and a who’s who of innovative hip-hop at the
time, the members of Native Tongues were idealistic teenagers, hanging out
both in and out of the studio while making groundbreaking music. The
individual Tongues may have made better records as they matured, but the
core Native Tongues style can be traced back to the debut albums of its
founding members: Straight Out The Jungle, De La’s 3 Feet High And Rising, and
Tribe’s People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm.
Straight Out The Jungle is still very much a product of the boom-bap percussion
that was characteristic of East Coast hip-hop at the time, but Jungle Brothers

The document discusses three South African musical acts - GoodLuck, Jimmy Nevis, and Beatenberg - and their experiences performing at venues owned by Sun International, including Sun City and GrandWest. It provides background on each act and their musical styles. It also discusses how Sun International supports local South African talent and provides stages for both local and international artists. The venues are able to host large-scale events and help expose local artists to wider audiences.
Formed in 1999 in Ghana, Coastal Vibes Band plays authentic African music featuring criss-cross rhythms from local instruments. Originally with 8 members, the band now has 6 musicians who depict African culture and create "coastal vibes" music. Their 2005 debut album "Celebration" was a global hit and displayed their blend of African rhythms with rock guitar solos and piano. The band performs with energy and spirit, improvising on stage. They sing songs originally from Ghanaian fishermen to praise God and help with work, bringing this "coastal vibes" music to international audiences to share Ghanaian coastal culture worldwide.
This document summarizes the transition from pop music to rock music in the early 1950s. It notes that 1951 was a turning point when more European Americans started listening to African American music like rhythm and blues (R&B). It describes the popular music styles of the time, including pop ballads and novelty songs as well as jump blues, doo wop, and gospel-influenced singers. It highlights how Bill Haley's country band covering "Rocket 88" in 1951 helped introduce R&B to white audiences and broader popularity.
The document discusses the history and development of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) from the 1960s to the present. It analyzes what went wrong with OPM, including radio/TV reformatting in the 1980s that constricted its growth. The document proposes recommendations to make OPM world-class, such as encouraging OPM on all media, increasing its creation/promotion, and reducing piracy. It argues the best strategy for international success is creating distinctly Filipino music in Filipino for Filipinos, rather than imitating other styles, so the world can appreciate Philippine culture.
The document discusses the history and development of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) from the 1960s to the present. It analyzes what went wrong with OPM, including radio/TV reformatting in the 1980s that constricted its growth. To fix OPM, the document recommends encouraging more OPM genres on radio/TV, increasing commitment to creating/promoting OPM material, and reducing piracy. Afrobeats originated in Nigeria in the 1960s through the work of Fela Kuti. Kuti combined jazz, funk, and traditional African music and added political messages to create the genre. Afrobeats spread from Nigeria to other parts of Africa and the world. It features call-and-response vocals, complex rhythms, and influences from genres like highlife, jazz, and funk. Major artists who helped popularize the genre include Fela Kuti, Sarkodie, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, and others.
This document discusses music from different decades and provides top songs lists. It begins by defining music as an art that combines sounds in a way people enjoy. It then discusses how music was expressed in ancient Greece through the Muses. The document suggests that without music, people would find other ways of artistic expression like poetry. It provides overviews of popular music genres and top songs of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The document concludes by thanking the reader.
Bluegrass music originated in the 1940s from the blending of multiple musical traditions that immigrants brought to the rural Appalachian region. It features acoustic string instruments like fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and upright bass. Innovators like Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and Lester Flatt popularized the genre in the mid-20th century. Technology advances like recordings and radio broadcasts helped bluegrass reach wider audiences. Major festivals now promote bluegrass worldwide celebrating its mix of styles and everyday lyrical themes from Appalachian life.
The document discusses the folk band Mumford & Sons and their philosophy of music creation. It describes how the band formed in London in 2007 and their rise to global success. It also talks about their unique touring style where they visit small towns and how they collaborated with African musicians in South Africa, producing an EP that blended cultures. The band believes creativity requires trust between collaborators and being open to new ideas.
Reggae originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s, incorporating elements of mento, ska, and rocksteady. It was influenced by genres like calypso, R&B, and jazz. Sound systems played a key role in its development and popularity. Artists like Prince Buster and Coxsone Dodd produced early reggae hits and helped establish the genre. Ska preceded rocksteady and had a distinctive upbeat sound featuring horns and vocals. Rocksteady featured slower tempos, electric bass, and organ. True reggae emerged in the late 1960s with elements of Rastafari and faster tempos. The instrumentation included drums, bass guitar, keyboards, horns, and vocal harmonies. Legendary artist Bob Marley
The document provides a history of blues music from its origins in the 17th century among enslaved Africans in the US to its major developments and popularization. It discusses how blues incorporated elements of African music traditions as well as European instruments and structures. Key developments included the banjo and guitar becoming prominent blues instruments and the standardization of the 12-bar blues chord progression. The document also profiles some of the most influential blues artists like BB King and lists some classic early blues songs.
The document provides an overview of various musical genres including Afro-Latin American music, African music, Latin American music, popular music, and Philippine popular music. It describes the characteristic features and types of these musical genres, including instrumentation, vocal and dance forms, and important musical influences. Examples are given of popular music styles within each genre along with suggested activities for listening, analyzing, choreographing dances, and performing concerts of the different types of music.
The document provides biographies of several Western Cape jazz legends from South Africa. It discusses the careers and contributions of jazz musicians like Robert Sithole, Dougie Schrikker, Ezra Ngcukana, Monty Webber, Anthony Cedras, 'Cups And Saucer' Nkanuka, Jimmy Adams, Vincent Kolbe, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Christopher Columbus Ngcukana, Russell Herman, Colin Campbell, Tony Schilder, Abdullah Ibrahim, Alvin Dyers, Cliffy Moses, Louis Moholo, Donald Tshomela, and Ian Smith. 5. Ghana Soundz
AfRobeAt, funk & fuSion
in 70’S GhAnA Volume 1
Ghana Soundz was born out of an idea by compiler and Soundway founder
Miles Cleret and led to a series of projects dedicated to Ghanaian music.
Pounding rhythms, blaring horns and pumping vocals – the music featured is a
document of a time forgotten when flares and Cuban heels strutted the streets
and night-spots of Accra, the sizzling hot and humid capital of Ghana. Influenced
as much by traditional rhythms and local highlife as by the music of Fela Kuti,
James Brown and Santana, these tunes had almost become extinct.
The music was collated by Miles Cleret who spent three painstaking years traveling
the length and breadth of Ghana. The result was a treasure trove of Ghanian highlife,
Afrobeat and funk of which most had never been released outside of Africa and some
tracks that had never even left the studio floor.

6. Ghana Soundz
AfRobeAt, funk & fuSion
in 70’S GhAnA Volume 2
Volume two continues the Soundway journey into the underground sounds of 1970s
Ghana where highlife, rock, and soul collided and merged with tradition and culture.
Much of the material featured had previously never been released outside of Africa
thus the album offers a window on a scene previously unknown outside of Ghana.
This period is particularly pertinent to Ghana’s history as it heralded the the last major
wave of music productions before financial crisis and revolution hit Ghana hard in the
1980s reducing the recording industry to a shadow of it’s former self.

Soundway Records step back into Africa with thirty three original and previously un-
reissued tracks from Ghana delivering a follow on of sorts from the hugely successful
Nigeria Special. This collection hopes to do nothing more than capture a snapshot of
what was arguably the most colourful and interesting period in the nation’s musical
history. The diversity of the 70s Ghana sound was immense with influences of Latin,
rock and blues amongst the traditions of afrobeat and high-life.
Compiled and researched by Soundway’s Miles Cleret, Ghana Special represents
nearly ten years of on-going research: driving around the cities of Accra, Tema,
Cape Coast, Takoradi and Kumasi, knocking on musician’s doors and visiting ex-
distributors, DJs, collectors, manufacturers and shop owners that helped piece the
story together.

GRooVe 1972-80
Arguably West Africa’s best-kept musical secret, Orchestre Poly Rythmo are from
the Republic of Benin in West Africa and are a household name in their home country.
This collection reflects their many poly-rhythmic styles including hard afro-funk,
driving afrobeat, deep Afro-latin and Cuban grooves – this fusion is the product of
combining the sounds they had heard in Lagos with two traditional Vodun rhythms:
Sato and Sakpata.
Being such a small country, Benin has had little in the way of musical exposure
over the years and many people have had no idea to it’s exact location sandwiched
alongside Togo between Ghana and Nigeria. In 2009 the band reformed and embarked
on their first European tour putting Benin firmly on the map. This compilation earmarks
the cream of their recording output and sounds as fresh today as it did then.

the Sound of the undeRGRound
lAGoS dAnCeflooR, 1974-79
Nigeria Disco Funk Special is an intuitive and supreme collection of heavy dance-
floor grooves from urban Lagos in the ‘70s – hot and driving slices of funk, disco and
boogie that show just how vibrant the music scene was in one of West Africa’s most
populous and culturally diverse cities.
In the ‘70s, it wasn’t just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in
Lagos. The loosely structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America
had long been a part of Nigerian music. Lagos was the funk and disco capital of West
Africa with more nightclubs, bars, spots and dance-floors than any place along the
coast from Dakar all the way to Kinshasa.
This collection is a product of the Lagos youth soaking up the funk and disco of the
US (Brass Construction, BT Express) and adding their own stamp on a sound that
was in tune with America’s latest craze but with a uniquely African twist.

fuzz funk in 1970S niGeRiA
Nigeria Rock Special shines a light on the lesser known musical output that
developed in Nigeria beyond the traditional sounds of highlife and afrobeat – young
bands caught up in the wave of psychedelic rock that was sweeping Europe and the
States in the late ‘60s.
Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker’s visits to Lagos and his band Airforce
(featuring many Nigerian musicians), the sound of fuzzed out rock reverberated
around the universities and nightspots of Lagos and Ibadan.
Soundway’s on-going commitment to documenting the diversity of the Nigerian
recording industry is captured through this startling collection of tracks. Compiler

deeper than a single style. This compilation, that Miles Cleret spent nearly five years
putting together, presents some of the best un-reissued and forgotten sounds from Nigeria
that have previously been overlooked.
The two CD’s cover some of the many styles that emerged and flourished in the early
1970s, laying the ground for many of today’s West African artists. Everything from

lAtin, CAlyPSo And funk on
the iSthmuS 1965-75
Panama! is the first title in Soundway’s Panama trilogy and introduces the fertile
music of a geographically and culturally unique nation situated between Central
America and the Caribbean.
Panama! focuses on the heavy latin descargas, raw calypsos, deep funk and
Caribbean soul during the golden age of Panamanian music. All featured tracks were
originally released in very small quantities but have now been re-released and sound
as vibrant and relevant today as the era they were produced.
The Panama series compiler, Roberto Ernesto Gyemant, trawled the country’s radio
stations and dusty record shops and found a mesmerising mix of musical styles that
were influenced by North American soul, latin from Cali and Baranquilla and calypsos
from the Caribbean.

Panama! 2 showcases the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile
decades of the 1960s and 70s offering a non-stop journey through the afro-rhythms
and carnival sounds of Panama, the gateway to central America.
It is little known that Panama was a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music.
The dance-floors and bars of Colon spat out a heady mix that took in the raw
vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of
Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba.
Highlights include some of Panama’s most revered groups known collectively as ‘Los
Combos Nacionales’ including The Exciters, The Soul Fantastics and Los Silvertones.

Volume three of the series provides further evidence of Panama’s mesmerizing mix of
tropical music and national pride during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s.
Compiled by Quantic, Roberto Gyemant and Miles Cleret, Panama! 3 uncovers a
host of artists whose music has never been released outside of Panama.
Due to its’ unique geographical location connecting North and South America,
Panama’s music is a soulful blend of Latin American, Caribbean, European and
indigenous forms. From bilingual calypsos to guajira jazz, from tropical guarachas to
cumbia tamboreras, Panamanian musicians fearlessly combined styles that reflected
their multicultural environment during a turbulent time in the young country’s history.

19. Victor uwaifo
GuitAR-boy SuPeRStAR 1970-76
Guitar-Boy Superstar is the first survey of the long career of the legendary Nigerian
musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo. This collection of music goes back to the
early 70s and has re-awakened fans in the west to a sublime talent who is now widely
regarded as one of Nigeria’s forgotten stars.
The album focuses on a unique style of highlife music that Uwaifo called ‘Ekassa’ –
based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and a dash
of rock and soul.
Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya (‘the evil genius of highlife’) in the early
60s, Uwaifo went on to form his own band - The Melody Maestros, producing one of
Nigeria’s biggest ever selling records called Joromi in 1965 for which he was awarded
Africa’s first Gold disc.

20. tumbélé!
biGuine, AfRo & lAtin SoundS fRom
the fRenCh CARibbeAn 1963-73
Often overlooked in the English-speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and
soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and
Guadeloupe in the 1960s.
Tumbele showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the ‘60s and ‘70s
– a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the ‘80s.
The roots of the Antillean biguine sound are probably in the meeting of early “hot”
jazz from New Orleans and Paris, combined with the rhythms that came over on the
slave ships from Africa.
Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal and the French Caribbean for many years, this
collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and
Guadeloupe – the missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean.
