3. What is 'Foley Artistry' ?
● It involves the creation and enhancement of sound effects that are
synchronized with the actions on screen, ensuring that the audience hears
the sounds that wouldn't have been naturally recorded during the filming
process.
● It can include things like the sound of clothes moving, people walking,
doors making squeaky noises, and glass breaking. (Almo)
● The word "Foley" comes from a person named Jack Foley, who helped
make sounds for movies. In a Universal Pictures movie, they asked Foley to
make the sound of footsteps. This is where the term "Walking Foley"
started. (Almo)
● Foley Artistry bridges the gap between what's captured on set by the film
crew's microphones and what's needed for a complete, realistic
soundscape.
4. Foley Techniques?
● They use everyday objects to make these sounds like
shoes for footsteps, coconuts for horse hooves, or even
crumpled paper for fire crackling.
● The goal of Foley is to produce hyper-realistic sounds that
match the on-screen actions perfectly, sometimes even
exaggerating certain sounds for dramatic effect.
● Timing is critical in Foley. Foley artists must precisely sync
their sound production with the actors' movements on
the screen to make it seamless and realistic.
5. How to Create?
● Corn starch in a leather pouch - Snow crunching
● An old chair - Creaking sound
● An arrow or thin stick - Whoosh sound
● Acorns - Bones breaking
● Large and thin metal plates - Thunder
