Content:
Students will apply their learning regarding sound waves generating artistic
images. Students will generate their own images using their favorite song as
the inspiration.
Objectives:
1) To explore how one art form can be used to generate another.
2) To expand the student’s concept and understanding of “art.”
3) To apply this newly acquired knowledge to create their own
images.
Assessment:
1) Students will be assessed by interactive questions and the answers
they supply.
2) Students will be assessed as to their creativity and understanding of
how sound can generate art via the application of this process to their
own work.

Prerequisite Learning:
1) Students will have been given a previous in‐depth lesson
demonstrating the concepts of sound waves and how sound can be used
to generate art.
Lesson Preparation:
Equipment/Materials:
Large paper and coloured pencils for 30 students
Each student should have brought their own recording on their own IPOD (if
possible) of the song they wish to use as the basis for their artwork

2. Advanced Preparation:
Teacher should be very familiar with sound waves and the images they can
possibly represent.
Presentation: (50 min.)
Set: (5 min.)
Teacher will review the information presented in last Wednesday’s art class.
The teacher will ask the students the following interactive questions. What is
sound? How can it be used to create images? How do I intend to create my image
based on my chosen piece of music? What types of sound waves will generate what
types of images, (think about wavelength, frequency, and amplitude)?
Development: (40 min.)
1) Next the students will be asked to listen on their IPOD to their chosen
recordings. Ask the students to visualize the recording? What would it look
like on their paper? What would the sound waves look like? What images
could they possibly generate? Would they be great in frequency and thus
pitch? Remind them that sound is comprised of several waves moving in
various shapes and sizes, often simultaneously.
2) Hand out the large paper to the students and coloured pencils.
3) Assignment: Students will be asked to create an image that best reflects, in
their own opinion, this musical composition. This will be done using
coloured pencil crayons. Teacher will be sure to remind the students to
consider the style of the music. What would the sound waves of this music
generate? Would they have great amplitude and thus volume? Also remind
the student they are free to create whatever image best represents this piece
of music and that they have approximately 35 minutes to work on this
project and that they must utilize this time appropriately. This means they
are to spend a reasonably amount of time completing this project not five or
ten minutes. However, if they do complete the project early (say 25 minutes)
they may continue to work in their sketchbooks for Ladd Fogerty’s class.
7) The teacher will assist any students in the room that require help, and answer
any questions that may arise.
Closure: (5 min.)
Brief presentation of works. Students will be asked to walk around the room and
view one another’s work.

5. Personal Reflection for Sound As Art Lesson 2

The students in this lesson were offered an opportunity to express
themselves creatively based on the information given to them in the previous lesson
whereby they explored how one art form can be used to generate another. Through
this learning experience they were given the opportunity to expand their own
concept and understanding of “art.” In this lesson the students created their own
images based on a song chosen from their IPOD. They were given free reign over
their project, the only parameters were the medium, which we switched to pastels
because it provided a more efficient means of creating the images than pencil
crayon. They were however, asked to reflect the song they had chosen in a way that
they personally felt best represented the music, in their opinion. This was not a
black and white, right and wrong assignment but an opportunity for
experimentation and consideration and personal growth.
At the start of the class one girl came up to me and said, “I missed the last
class so I have no idea what we are doing.” This was a great opportunity for me as it
challenged my ability to quickly explain a given subject matter to one student while
still maintaining the class’s attention and moving them forward with their own
projects. It was interesting to see how each student related to the subject matter on
an individual basis. Furthermore, the individual conversation with the previously
mentioned girl was my first chance to really connect with one of the students from
the class.
The completion of this project by the students allowed me to really see their
individual absorption of the subject material and interest in it. In my opinion, all the
students clearly understood their task and sufficiently completed it. After the
completion of the projects, we adapted our lesson plan to include hanging the
pictures up with blurbs on correlating cards beside them with the following
information: Song Title used, Student’s name, and a short note as to why they chose
to represent that sound it that particular manner. I created a title page for the
project (clarifying the process and images to any individuals viewing the artist’s
works).
