This document discusses an experience the author had providing patient-centered care as a nursing student. The author helped care for a Spanish-speaking patient by translating and communicating effectively. Though the patient refused recommended treatment and left against medical advice to attend a religious convention, the author was able to make the patient feel at ease by taking the time to understand her values and beliefs. The experience highlighted the challenges of patient-centered care in respecting a patient's wishes even when you disagree, but also its rewards.
