Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Someone get sam (opening scene)
1. EXT. WOODS - DAY
In the woodlands of South Dakota, two men in orange hunting vests &
cowboy hats are in the woods with a woman. One of the men is
digging a hole with his rusty shovel, and the other sitting on the
ground toying with his toothpick. The woman wears a denim jacket
and looks a lot more confident than someone in her position would
typically be. Her name is SAMANTHA or short for SAM. Sam's wrists
are bound to a tree as she stands there watching the two men go
about their business.
MAN #2
You almost done? My ass is starting to
itch.
MAN #1
Shutup. You ain't the one tearin up your
back over this shit.
MAN #2
I'm just sayin.
MAN #1
Just sayin a shitload of shit is all I
hear. Quit your huffin.
MAN #2
What about this pretty little skank over
here? How do you figure we split the
finances after we put her in the ground?
MAN #1
Like we agreed on. 55/45. No one else
around here's got her except us "soon-to-
be-rich-in-the-hills" sum' bitches haha.
SAM
Seems to me ya'll both just talk more than
anything.
MAN #1
I must be hard of hearin, cause I know
this skank aint talkin to us, especially
me.
He walks over to her to intimidate her, but she smirks in his face.
SAVAN
2. No, I'm pretty sure I was talkin to you
sugar-foot.
MAN #2
Haha, this one's got a mouth on her.
MAN #1
Yeah, a big one that doesn't know when to
stop runnin it. I hope you know we ain't
the only ones lookin for ya, sweetheart.
There's a big ass, god damn collection on
your head, and we're gunna be the ones to
collect it.
SAM
Is that right?
MAN #1
That's right.
MAN #2
You're sketch was all over the television
baby girl. Everyone in Dakota wants you
d.e.a.d. I hate to break it to ya, but you
ain't lastin beyond seven more sunrises.
MAN #1
And once that dirt gets cold, and you
breathe that shit in; all you're gunna see
is a big mutha fuckin cloud of brown. That
shit don't take kindly even to the likes
of a fancy pants female.
SAM
Fancy pants? That's cute. Why don't you go
back over there and play dress up with
your friend. I'm sure he misses your
company.
A wave of anger takes over the man's face.
MAN #1
You just don't know girl.
MAN #2
Haha I think she likes you.
3. Sam grabs the gun out of the man's holster as he turns around & he
doesn't notice. However, he still has another one tucked in the
back of his shirt.
MAN #1
Shutup. It's your turn to dig ass-wipe.
You hear the sound of a cocking pistol. The first man turns around
& the other slowly gets up. Everyone sits in silence, ready to
draw. The tension grows. BOOM! reload! BOOM! Sam gets both men
before they have a chance to fire as they both plop to the ground.
The first man doesn't die though. Sam then covers her face as she
fires into the rope she was bound by. The rope releases & she walks
over to the men.
SAM
Well, god damn gentlemen. Look at the
fancy-pants female now. If you got
anything to say before your train arrives
you might as well say it.
MAN #1
Hey. Look. Darling. Back there. I..I
didn't mean any--
BAM! Sam puts a quick bullet in his head.
SAM
Well, at least that hole you dug ain't
goin to waste.
She bends down taking their pistols, drinks some of their water,
and checks their ammunition. C.U. She whips the newly acquired
revolver horizontally; placing the barrel back in place.
BLACK SCREEN, TITLE UP: SOMEONE GET SAM

C.U. Sam grabs the dead man's cowboy hat, whips back her hair, and
places it on her head.

C.U. Her boots run past the camera.
BLACK SCREEN, CREDITS
She's on the run through the woods.
