Content of presentation
 Sugar cane agriculture is the one share of Ethiopian agricultural economy.
As a result, the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation was established by
Government proclamation in the 2nd day of December 2010 to undertake
the responsibility of the entire Ethiopian Sugar sector development
 Accordingly Tana Beles Integrated Sugar Development Project is the one
among the new sugar development projects. According to the
government plan, the development of massive irrigation projects for
sugar production in different parts of the country is involved.
 Tana Beles Integrated Sugar Development Project is the one among the
new sugar development projects. According to the government plan, the
development of massive irrigation projects for sugar production in
different parts of the country is involved.
 Main Canal is approximately 30 Km and ends near Fendika Town from
where Trunk mains for Sprinkler Irrigation for Phase I & Phase II of Upper
Beles and Upper Ayma left side command areas, take off. 40% of its
length lies in rocky strata, 8.5% in filling and rest traverses through earth

 The main canal is proposed to be lined, with concrete
bed and masonry sides with vertical water face, where
the rock is encountered and in the filled reaches. Where
the canal is in cutting in soils, trapezoidal sections with
1.2 mm thick HDPE film as geo membrane have been
adopted.
 The Primary canals will also be lined with 1.2 mm thick
HDPE film and masonry for gentle slope portion,
reinforced concrete where the canal section is chute
while the secondary canal is PVC pipe
 In case of Tana bales sugar projet irrigation system thare
are a lot of probems.

 TanaBeles Integrated Sugar Development Project is located near Fandika Town, capitalof JawiWoreda,
which is 150km from capitalcity of Awi zone, Enjibara, 270km from capitalcity of Amhara National
Regional State Bahir dar.
 TanaBeles Integrated Sugar Development Project found in the western periphery of Amhara National
Regional State, and also found Benishangul Gumuz National Regional State, 60km from capitalcity of
metekel zone Gilgel Beles and300km from capitalcity of Benishangul Gumuz National Regional State
Asosa.
 The project activity started on the south from the weir site after 11.9km following the main canal for
Upper Beles and south eastern tip of Upper Ayma.
 Thesitehaslowtomediumreliefdifferenceswithan altituderangeof806to1242metersabovesealevel.

 Theproject area is located close to Pawe station, 30km from our project and canbe
characterized as warm humidclimate with mean annualhumidityreaching to 80 % .
 The maximum temperature fluctuating between 390C in April and 270C in July,while
the minimumtemperature variation is bounded between 160C (December) and 190C
(July).
 The mean annual rainfall around the irrigation scheme is represented by Pawi
station with mean annual rainfall of 1576mm (from 1986-2006)

Under sluice Gate: .
 TheMain Problems ofthis USG:
I. construction quality problem: it is constructed belowits concretegrade i.e. the recommendedcriteria is C-40
but for this case contractor only use C- 35, Nowa day this problem is solved. figure
II. Forthis undersluice there is noJip Crane for cleaning the gate
 Forthe case opening and closing activity it uses, metal rope Gate load capacity Below its load capacity
 All metals around the gate not painted anti rust
 At present time gates of under sluice can’t work properly because ofrust, this results siltation in canal.
HEAD REGULATOR:
This HR has also similar problem with under sluice
 corrosion problem Because ofthis problem,gates can notcontrol the water that enter into canal

Infield managment problems
 applying water at uniform level irrespective of the soil, growth
stage, and growing month, It is not considered the system
actual water application and crop water requirement because of
no water measurement device
 Also there is problem of non-uniformity of water application,
Poor system operation, care and maintenance
 Water logging is the natural flooding and over irrigation that brings
water at underground levels to the surface. As a consequence,
displacement of the air occurs in the soil with corresponding changes
in soil processes and an accumulation of toxic substances that
impede plant groth.
 Field management is too poor and also irrigation material handling is
not good, i.e. at lateral line riser valve is not cover by precuts and
flexible hose not distributed properly
 The major Tana beles sugar project is no drainage networks.

application, also it is not considered the soil type,
growing month, stage of growth, Thus, improved
irrigation scheduling with respect to the soil, growing
