But why?
4. Why?
Easy answers:
● “Just for fun!”
● “Easy to collaborate”
● “Standing on the shoulders of giants”
● “Better security”
● “Better performance”
But is that the most important?
5. Why?
Easy answers:
● “Just for fun!”
● “Easy to collaborate”
● “Standing on the shoulders of giants”
● “Better security”
● “Better performance”
But is that the most important?
6. Why?
For me the answer is:
● “securing access to software for everybody”
● “preventing software dominance by one
company”
● “allowing people to tinker with technology
and devices”
As important as breathing air!
7. History
I'm 42 years old now.
I'm from a generation which has seen a
drastic migration of almost all jobs and
productivity to software.
And it isn't finished: software driven
Mobility, AI full automation.
WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE IN
CONTROL?
8. Tell the full story
Be an evangelist!
Shout the truth!
It is possible to convince people that it's
better to use LibreOffice instead of
Microsoft Office. Why?
Because it's important. Not only
because it's free beer (which it
already is in many cases)
11. Where are we now?
From “please help” and a joke about
“world domination” to...
The most important operating system by
many metrics:
- Majority share in Server Operating
Systems
- Most important OS in Embedded
applications
- On most Smartphones
12. Where are we now?
The top 500 supercomputers... they
now ALL run Linux
13. Where are we now?
Belgian eID software is fully GPLv3
Licensed
Belgian voting software will be
OpenSourced (finally)
14. Where are we now?
Yet “Dominance” was and is a joke.
And Microsoft seems to have given up on
the idea to have to 'crush' Linux to be
successful.
Linux and OpenSource was always the
underdog. This new reality feels 'strange'.
Somehow we get the feeling we already
'won'.
15. Lurking Dangers
Mass surveillance
Privacy Ignorance
Control of OpenSource packaged “Cloud
Services”
OpenCore versus OpenSource
Copyright madness
Control by a few companies over Mobile,
search and social interaction data
Increased focus on Apache License and such
16. Where are we going?
Experiments for distributed social media
Push for legislation defaulting to
OpenSource Licenses for publicly funded
software development
Affero GPL to address concerns for
software being used for 'cloud
applications'
17. Where are we going?
Licenses beyond GPLv3?
Do you want your software to be used for
mass surveillance or for weapon systems?

Software for the Electric Vehicle Future :)
18. Thank you for your
contributions!
You are making the world a better place!
