- Pictorial representation or framework of software engineering. “ Organisation plans/organises/manages people to employ standards, methods, procedures and tools to achieve a goal, within the constraints of time and money.” Generic view, applicable to all fields of engineering (mechanical, electrical, electronic, chemical, civil….). But Software Eng is different? It has more commonality than differences. Goals or aims must be aligned to business objectives – e.g. deliver a capability, save money, increase sales, improve safety. Goals flow down to software. International, National and Industry standards are CORE in all businesses and professions. CORE of diagram! People . Relevant qualification and experience - lack of either is a weakness. Leading Soft Eng academics (e.g. Barry Boehm, Prof at USC) have been calling for certification of engineers. Methods support standards and are defined by gurus/experts in books. We must be familiar with strengths/weaknesses of methods (estimation, analysis, design, test, config…). Tools , equipment and facilities support methods. Guard against tool panacea! Local/company procedures for guidance (only!) in the application of standards, methods, tools.
