furnish consulting company for pulp and
papermakers. The founders are Lauri and
Juhani Lehtonen.
Since then, GloCell has become the best on

What is SoftaCell
• SoftaCell is an intelligent pulp and furnish mix simulation software
• Its function is to find the quality versus cost optimum in paper and board
production through the optimal use of fibers between grades and machines

SoftaCell in production optimization
• SoftaCell is highly effective tool for delivering the most
cost efficient production in any change occurred
• Fiber flows should be adjusted based on the difference of
fiber performance in the different situations
• When electricity costs increase, the mills using highly
refined fibers start to loose money
• With SoftaCell correcting actions can be solved in the
matter of hours or days
• Loosing money with inefficient recipes can be eliminated
• With SoftaCell corporation production development
department can multiply its performance and
capabilities
• Whereas in traditional production development a new mix
needs to be created and then its performance needs to be
tested
• In SoftaCell the performance wanted will be set first and
then the user finds with SoftaCell how to deliver the
wanted performance
• This opens a new level of value creation for the corporate
R&D
• When company is having multiple mills with multiple
machines, the control of fiber flows becomes
immensely important for reaching the lowest cost level
of producing the quality delivered to customers
• The old way of thinking is that the certain pulps should be
used for bringing out the certain quality, the truth is that
there are multiple ways to produce the same quality from
the multiple fibers and almost always the cheapest
combination is not the one in use

What is needed for the SoftaCell from customer
• Laboratory refining data for the individual pulps with
paper technical measurement results
• GloCell Oy will help with data compliance verification
• If there is a lack of needed pulp data, GloCell has good
relationships to third party laboratory for delivering the
needed service
• Resources needed from the customer during the project
preparation and implementation:
• Project manager responsible for the project management
• Contact person for technical issues, in example a person
from R&D or related.
• IT-department contact person, to ensure that the installation
will be straightforward

Modifications done in order to reach the quality window was following:
1) Refining for the the Euca3 pulp in top and bottom layers was increased from 50 kWh/ton to 90 kWh/ton
2) Refining for the middle layer was increased for the RCF fibers from 40 kWh/ton to 50 kWh/ton
3) Top and bottom layer grammages was decreased from 20 g/m2 to 18 g/m2
4) Middle layer grammage was increased from 80 g/m2 to 84 g/m2

SoftaCell in production optimization • SoftaCell is highly effective tool for delivering the most cost efficient production in any change occurred • Fiber flows should be adjusted based on the difference of fiber performance in the different situations • When electricity costs increase, the mills using highly refined fibers start to loose money • With SoftaCell correcting actions can be solved in the matter of hours or days • Loosing money with inefficient recipes can be eliminated • With SoftaCell corporation production development department can multiply its performance and capabilities • Whereas in traditional production development a new mix needs to be created and then its performance needs to be tested • In SoftaCell the performance wanted will be set first and then the user finds with SoftaCell how to deliver the wanted performance • This opens a new level of value creation for the corporate R&D • When company is having multiple mills with multiple machines, the control of fiber flows becomes immensely important for reaching the lowest cost level of producing the quality delivered to customers • The old way of thinking is that the certain pulps should be used for bringing out the certain quality, the truth is that there are multiple ways to produce the same quality from the multiple fibers and almost always the cheapest combination is not the one in use 10 Right pulp allocation Production development Corporate production Cost efficiency

What is needed for the SoftaCell from customer • Laboratory refining data for the individual pulps with paper technical measurement results • GloCell Oy will help with data compliance verification • If there is a lack of needed pulp data, GloCell has good relationships to third party laboratory for delivering the needed service • Resources needed from the customer during the project preparation and implementation: • Project manager responsible for the project management • Contact person for technical issues, in example a person from R&D or related. • IT-department contact person, to ensure that the installation will be straightforward 13

  • 15. 15 In this example “Euca original recipe” shows similar strength properties with “Euca New recipe” but with 4mm less board thickness. Producer don’t want to increase thickness Technical customer service question is, can the Euca1 used by the producer be replaced with Euca3 ?
  • 16. 16 After the optimization done for the board recipe “Euca new recipe” even better overall strength properties than the original mix with less thickness Modifications done in order to reach the quality window was following: 1) Refining for the the Euca3 pulp in top and bottom layers was increased from 50 kWh/ton to 90 kWh/ton 2) Refining for the middle layer was increased for the RCF fibers from 40 kWh/ton to 50 kWh/ton 3) Top and bottom layer grammages was decreased from 20 g/m2 to 18 g/m2 4) Middle layer grammage was increased from 80 g/m2 to 84 g/m2
  • 17. 17 After the quality optimization economical comparisons are as easy as they are for basic furnish mixes as well In this case it was possible to achieve even better quality properties than it was possible to reach with original board mix Based on the economical evaluation new board mix could offer 7,5 € cheaper production costs

Example for fiber selection • How to select correct fibers for the right products? • Lets create comparison between two different Eucalyptys fibers inside the same Tissue recipe • Let’s take the different pricing of the fibers into account • Original Euca 2 : 445€/ton • Alternative Euca 3 : 450€/ton • Which one you would select? 19
  • 20. 20 Tissue 2 has the highest simultaneous Bulk and Tensile index Euca 2 is cheaper by 5€/ton Bulk and Tensile index are the key parameters which should stay at the same level or above the existing In this you can see the same recipe created with SoftaCell with the different Euca components
  • 21. Cost comparison without changes 21 • Due to the 5€/ton price difference in pulp purchasing price the old recipe is 3,8€/ton cheaper • When the new eucalyptys provides better quality • The question is if the use of the new fiber will be optimized would the old recipe still be better?
  • 22. 22 By using the inbuild optimizing function the user can find which other solutions would be inside the quality window set above right In this case user will examine what other alternatives exist which are better or equal in quality to Tissue 1 In the mix limitation window user sets the min and max values for the end quality In this example the min values are set to match the old Tissue 1 recipes performance
  • 23. 23 1. The optimization function gives the list of different recipes producing quality to match the limitations set 2. In this case the option 2 is selected and opened as new mix 3. The modified recipe would contain 87 w% HW and 13 w% SW instead of 75 and 25 with lower combined refining energy 4. The quality of the new Opt 2 recipe in comparison is better than the old Tissue 1 recipe with old Euca
  • 24. What would the final result be? 24 1. If the new euca would be introduced without any change in the recipe the change would be negative in cost 2. If the the recipe would be optimized at the same time the change of fiber would offer possibility for 60k€ direct savings only originated from the ratio of the refining energy needed and direct fiber costs 3. In these kind of what if simulations SoftaCell is on its strongest, in this case it was found that more expensive fiber by purchasing price can lead to lower production costs if its quality potential can be maximized

  • 27. Furnish mix creation 27 With Furnish mix optimization tool user can create the paper mixes from the available pulps. In this example similar refining levels and weight ratios are used for the both “Euca old” and “Euca New” furnish mixes

Quality window settings 28 In the mix limit properties window user will set the Min and Max limitations based on the wanted quality window In this example Focus is set on better runability without loosing bulk or brightness To find out can the given quality window be possible user will use SoftaCell’s optimization tools

Optimization 29 After the optimization SoftaCell shows the results and indicates if the chosen quality window can be reached It will also report the needed furnish mix corrections After finding the solution for the quality window user can look if the change is economically feasible as well In this example it was possible to reach the given quality window with “Euca new” mix
