Darren Edge Access - Health and Social Care Sociology The study of society Understanding the social world we live in
Aims To understand and define social class in the U.K. To look at the impact of social class in society To look at social class in your specialist subject To start to think about social issues
SOCIAL CLASS Today we will be discussing social class Q, can you name the class of these boys?
There are currently3 main types of social class in the United KingdomUpper Class Middle Class Working Class However these groups can be sub-divided
The working class Unskilled Working Class These people would work in blue collar jobs with low incomes. Q can you give examples of other types of jobs?
The working class Skilled Working Class These people would be in skilled blue collar jobs, traditionally in industry Q can you give examples of other types of jobs?
Middle class The Middle Class typically consists of people with degrees from the less prestigious universities. They would be engaged in owning and running local businesses or working for larger corporations as junior and middle management

CLASS IS DIFFICULT TO MEASURE Class can be measured by your job Class can be measured in terms of how much education people have Class can be measured by how much people own Class, however, is more complicated because some people think that certain classes are somehow “better” than others They claim to be in social classes on the basis of their feelings about class, or because of snobbery
Can you tell what class people are? Is Class difficult to measure? Is it easy to define?
What is his class?
What is their class?
What is her class?
What is her class?
PEOPLE ARE NOT EQUAL We all have status We are all born with ascribed status, - Gender, Ethnicity, Age, Social Class Class can be an ascribed status, we are born with a class, but we can change it too Therefore class is also an achieved status, as well as an ascribed status
SOME IMPORTANT POINTS As a rule, the richer you are, the better your life style and life chances are People with more education earn more and have better health than poorer people People in higher income classes make sure that their children have the best opportunity for a good education
What is impact of social class to you? What class were you born in? Have you moved social classes since then? What class are you in now? How has it effected your life so far? How will it effect your future? Does social class matter? This video will hopefully illustrate how some people feel about social class http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0DUsGSMwZY
And now The Social Inequality Quiz
But what about social class? How has this effected or been involved in your specialist subject? Music Literature Film Theatre Television Sport
Songs about social class Another Day In Paradiseperformed by Phil Collins "She calls out to the man on the street'Sir, can you help me?It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,Is there somewhere you can tell me?'He walks on, doesn't look backHe pretends he can't hear herStarts to whistle as he crosses the streetSeems embarrassed to be there"
Music Rich Girlperformed by Hall and Oates "You're a rich girl and you've gone too far'Cause you know it don't matter anywayYou can rely on the old man's moneyYou can rely on the old man's money“ Q can you think of other examples?
Social class in Literature Animal Farm by  George Orwell
Social class in Literature Howards End by E. M. Forster Q can you think of other examples?
Social Class in Theatre Blood Brothers  by Willy Russell
Social Class in Theatre My Fair Lady is a musical  based upon  George Bernard Shaw's  Pygmalion  Q can you think of other examples?
What about sport? Social class plays a vital role in sports It dictates who can participate in what sports and to what level of participation. The limiting factor associated with social class is money. Money is the means which to obtain the equipment and facilities necessary to partake in the sport, without money, one cannot perform organized sports Are there sports that are typically associated with social class? Q can you think of other examplesof how sport and social class are organised, what classes are involved with which sports?
So what have we learnt today? Can we identify the different social class groups in the U.K? Can we identify some impact’s of social class in society and how it may affect people? Have we looked at social class in your specialist subject Have we started to think about social issues? Any Questions?
