Sociological Functionalism And The Functions Of Religion
Sociological prospective on religion explains the functions of religion perform, the inequality and
other it can buildup and maintain and the role it plays in our daily life.
Theoretical Prospective:
Structural Functionalism:
Functionalism is a theoretic scheme used in sociology which explains the social order, the
relationship between different parts and their role in stability of the society. When it is applied to the
sociological study of religion, this approach explains religion as functional body within society
because it forms social cohesion and integration by disclosing the bonds between people. Different
theorist like Emile Durkheim views religion as functional stuff. Religious rituals shows the spiritual
convictions of the representatives of the religions and help to enhance the belongingness of the
individuals to the groups. Such religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Durkheim's vision continues to control sociological thinking today on the functions of religion.
Firstly, religion gives meaning and purpose to life. Most of the things in life are hard to recognize.
That was surely true, as we came to know in early times, but even in today's highly scientific age,
most of life and death remains unknown, and religious faith and belief help many people make sense
of the things science cannot tell us.
Secondly, religion reinforces social unity and stability. This was is Durkheim's most important
vision. Religion enhances social stability in two ways. As it gives people a general set of beliefs and
hence is an essential agent of socialization. Moreover the collective practice of religion, such as in
houses of worship, brings people of various religions together physically which facilitates their
communication and other social interference thus promotes their social

The Importance Of Religion In Public Education
Religion has always been a major societal force. Though it helped define, shape, and lead cultures as
a prominent component of a well–rounded education in the past, in the modern day, we have
discarded religious teaching in public education in favor of progressive, accurate, practical, and
provable knowledge. Most people, including educators, students, and the parental figures of
students, agree that the best way to educate students is in such a manner. The issue, however
surprising, still stands, and is the source of big political discourse throughout the country. Some
states, and some of the political figures that drive the educational system, are in favor of continuing
the in–depth studies of religion in the classroom. The people in this group vary, some prefer sticking
to one religion to teach as compared to many. The Knightly Herald's Olivia Godfrey presents this
controversial topic in her article, titled, "Why Religion Should Not Be Taught in Public Schools." In
the article, Godfrey defends the idea that religion should be kept out of a public education, and that
rather, religion should be left entirely in the hands of a student's life at home. Government, be it state
or federal, has no place in having a say of what kind of religious education a student receives. It is a
personal and familial matter that differs from person to person, culture to culture. Godfrey unpacks
and addresses, with the help of appeals to common sense, and familiarity, the various perspectives

Why Is Monotheism A Polytheistic Religion

Hinduism in India as a polytheistic Religion
Is Hinduism a polytheistic or monotheistic religion? This question has lingered in the minds of
many individuals and they have given their various thoughts about it. Some people believe that
Hinduism is monotheistic because the Hindus believe that ultimately all is one, but looking at it
from my point of view I am convinced that Hinduism is a polytheistic religion because they have a
pantheon of gods and goddess for different purposes; they also have different sacred texts for
various reasons for their different gods. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion because it has various
gods for diverse purposes. To illustrate this concept, in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Hindu sacred texts were grouped into Vedic texts and post Vedic texts. Examples of the Vedic
texts are the Rig Veda which was the earliest text of the Hinduism which compromised of 1,028
hymns that was devoted to various gods and goddesses (Hinduism 1, p2). Another text that we come
across in Hinduism is the Dharma which stated how a person should live their life from one stage to
another, also the Upanishads which talked about reincarnation and the afterlife. All these texts were
part of the Vedic canon. As we go further we also see the laws of Manu, the Epics and Puranas
which are used more these days in the Hindu religion; these are the post Vedic

Speech On Diversity In India
Harmony means the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole. Unity in diversity means
oneness in the varieties. India is a best country proving this concept for many years. India is a
country where it is very clear to see unity in diversity because people of many religion, race, culture
and tradition live together without affecting each other's feelings and believes to their religion. Unity
in diversity focuses on the existence of unity even after lots of differences of cultural, social,
physical, linguistic, religious, political, ideological, psychological, etc. More number of diversities
makes more complex unity. People in India are united in spite of the much diversity of races,

The Major Sociological Theoretical Perspectives
The major social institution I choose to discuss through the lens of the three major sociological
theoretical perspectives of (1) structural functionalism, (2) symbolic interactionism, and (3) conflict
theory is religion. (1) Structural Functionalism: Functionalists sees society as a system of parts that
all serve a function. I think that religion serves a few functions for society. First of all, religion
creates this sort of common ground for people to share creating this sense of solidarity amongst
them. Also, religion seems to work as a sort of incentive for people to do good in the world. The
ideas of religions (such as the idea of an afterlife) helps to put purpose into people's lives – it gives
them a reason to live. To me, this perspective

All About Religion and Spirituality
Question 1– What is Religion?
Before deciding on the definition, I considered religion as being an "organised system of beliefs,
ceremonies and rules to worship a god or a higher being". The only phrase that I agreed with was the
fact of religion being an "organised system" mainly because of the fact that there is a set way of
practising the religion by, for example, praying and attending mass. In contradiction, the rest of the
definition makes it seem as if religion is straight–forward on a community basis, in contrast to a
personal one. Use of "a god or a higher being" contradicts the idea of polytheism, associated with
religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism (Theism.net, 2014).
As a result, I believe that the best definition of religion is "a set of guidelines that defines who you
are, whether or not you worship a god or gods. Religion varies from person to person and is based
on personal faith and it is also greater than its followers and allows individuals to explore the true
meaning of life" (Nguyen and Ibaviosa et al., 2014)
The reason I chose this definition is due to the fact that it is a collaborative definition that has been
compiled by utilising elements of other definitions about the word. This means that various
perspectives of the meaning of religion have been taken into consideration, which therefore means
that people are more likely to accept it. However, another reason that this definition stands out in
particular is the "greater than its followers"

Analysis Of Born A Crime By Trevor Noah
Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, is a compelling memoir allowing its readers insight into Noah's daily
life, under apartheid. Just like the title, Trevor Noah was born a crime. To explain, "During
apartheid, one of the worst crimes you could commit was having relations with a person of another
race...my parents committed that crime" (Noah 21). Trevor Noah was a mixed child. As a child, he
had difficulties fitting in, but that didn't stop him from identifying with both races. Trevor Noah
became a chameleon. Although, some may say it's impossible to identify and relate to various
cultures– Trevor Noah proved them wrong. He says, "My color didn't change, but I could change
your perception of my color" (Noah 56). Trevor Noah used language and behavior tactics to become
a cultural chameleon. Just like Trevor Noah, is able to adapt to his environment and culture; a
chameleon is able to change its color to merge into his environment, as well. For example, Noah
was fluent in many languages and that became one of his strongest tools. Noah explains "If you
spoke to me in Zulu, I replied to you in Zulu... Maybe I didn't look like you, but if I spoke like you, I
am you" (Noah 56). Language is a powerful tool used to unite various strangers to comfortable
acquaintances. Apartheid knew this and "part of the effort to divide black people was to make sure
we were separated not just physically but by language as well" (Noah 49) to further racism.
Throughout Trevor Noah's life, he learned to use the tool of language to his benefit. Furthermore,
Noah used his abilities to blend in during life endangering situations. For example, one day Noah
overheard a group of Zulu guys plotting to mug this "white guy." Speaking Zulu, Noah was able to
turn around and say "Yo, guys, why don't we just mug someone together" (Noah 55). The fact that
Noah was able to speak Zulu, it saved him from an unfortunate experience. The boys realized he
was just like one of them and decided not to harm him. Additionally, Noah and his mother was able
to get out of a sticky situation in a store, because his mother was able to speak Afrikaans (Noah 55).
Additionally, as another example, Trevor Noah found himself in jail. There was a man, who looked

McMinn (1996) draws a different conclusion in the field of counseling for the help of religion. It is
obvious that religion plays a significant role in a human being's life and including it in different
therapy sessions. Religion ties an individual to believe, principals and also commitment, and
through it there is a chance of healing for various individuals. The combination of the science study

in the church, I overheard two parties talk about therapy and religion and being a therapist I turned
my attention to their conversation.
The parties were talking about their different experience in the Christianity and Psychological

Religious identity was used as a mask to cover up the vested interests of the conflicting parties.
Therefore the root cause of communalism is not the presence of many religions in the country. When
religious sentiments are exploited with an economic or political motive the resultant effect gives rise
to the genesis of communalism.
He points out that secularism is a basic feature of the constitution which cannot be changed even by

religion was created in India as well just like Buddhism. These two religions share several
comparisons in both. They share several contrasting differences also. "Various syneretic Hindu–

contrasting differences are rites and rituals between Buddhism and Hinduism. Caste was another
contrasting difference these religions differed in. Cosmology and world view was another
contrasting difference between the two religions. Some of the practices they participated in were had

difference falls under some believes that a person must be born a Hindu to convert into Hinduism.
Some believe that a person only has to believe and practice Hinduism beliefs. In relating to

The Importance Of Religions In Advertising
In today's culture, everyone can see advertisements anywhere promoting products, people, or ideas.
Advertisements are found on billboards, radio, television, newspapers, logos on the sides of drinks,
and even in restrooms. Ads are used to make people think that this is a must, to make them think that
they need this or that they have to start doing this and that they should to be like this person or
follow them. In America, we have freedom of religion, meaning that anyone can be of any religion
or not follow any religion at all if they chose without being harassed or persecuted for their beliefs.
God and various religions should not be used in promoting products, people and/or ideas.
Companies use advertisements to promote their products with the basic principle that their product
is the best in the market. God and various religions should not be used in advertising products
because it is ethically wrong. If a company used God or a certain religion to promote their products
they are basically saying that they know the direct word of God. They are also saying that the beliefs
of one religious group's teachings and including the thoughts of the members of the religion are all
in agreement of that specific product, that it is the best. This approach is not only wrong in the
ethical sense but also it could deeply offend many different cultures and religious groups. It is also
not a good financial decision for the company to make. If one company promoted one of their

Hinduism is a monotheistic or polytheistic religion, and a few of the significant deities they worship,

Hinduism's history is complex and the early history, especially is a subject of much debate for

as the traditions that flow into the religion trace back thousands of years("Religion: Hinduism.").

Although there is an emphasis on personal spirituality, Hinduism's history has been closely linked

Comparing The Catholic Pilgrimage To St Peter's Basilica
Introduction:
Good morning everyone.
Today I want to talk to you about pilgrimage. I want to focus on two pilgrimages in particular; the
Hindu pilgrimage to the Indian city of Varanasi, and the Catholic pilgrimage to St Peter's Basilica in
Rome.
To quote Steve Branmn and Jim Rawls, "A pilgrimage is a journey inward as well as outward.
Pilgrims seek to strengthen and renew their faith through travel."
Therefore today I want to try and prove that the religious significance of a pilgrimage to St Peter's
Basilica and Varanasi are similar, as both serve the purpose of renewing faith through travel, and
also educating pilgrims on the history of their religion.

The Basilica features many instances of an upside down cross. This represents St Peter's crucifixion
upside down, – he was crucified like this because he did not want to defame Jesus by dying in the

Another more prominent feature of the Basilica; the alter and the dome that sits above it represent
the holy trinity. The holy spirit being the dove that sits on the alter, the son being the cross that sits
on top of the alter, and the father being the top–most part of the dome.
Symbolism is also prominent in the Hindu pilgrimage to Varanasi. Temples located in the city are
each devoted to a god, or an aspect of Hinduism.
As I mentioned earlier, the The Kasha Vishwanath temple dedicated to Shiva. The Bharat Mata
temple is dedicated to 'mother India.'
The Durga Mata Temple was built in the 18th century for the Hindu Goddess Durga.
The two pilgrimages can be linked through their symbolism. Each pilgrimage includes symbolic
monuments that represent various aspects of their religion.

Islam's Rise The Arabian Peninsula in the early seventh century was the perfect economical,
political, social and religious setting for the rise of Islam. Its successful emergence was due in part
to the adoption and rejection of various factors which allowed Islam to mirror the socioeconomic
trends, traditions, practices and religious theories that were prevalent throughout the region during
this time period. One of the most influential events on the rise of Islam was in the rise of Mecca as a

Prior to the rise of Islam most of the people of the Arabian Peninsula were polytheistic. Their beliefs
consisted of multiple powers that governed a chaotic and disorganized world, which mirrored their
view of society, man, and nature as separate elements. They worshiped various elements of life, like
the moon, the sun, ancestors and nature. The situation was entirely different in the surrounding
regions where there was a tectonic shift away from polytheism to monotheism. This influenced the
Arabian Peninsula because it was sandwiched between the Christian Byzantine Empire and the
Zoroastrian Sasanian Empire. The rise of Islam is quite logical in this religious climate. First and
foremost the fact that Islam is a monotheistic religion represents the overall rise in popularity of
monotheism and the decline of polytheism in the region. This was due in part to the religious
changes that came with the rise of Mecca and the intermingling of people that I previously
discussed. In this environment the idea of monotheism is introduced by traveling Christians and
Jews. This along with other concepts, theories and ideas, allowed for people to shake of the mental,

The effect of Buddhism in China was one of the most profound changes China ever had, as it

Religious Beliefs And The Bible
Religious beliefs have been around for almost as long as man himself, emphasizing the importance
of existential meaning. These beliefs hold very important values that are often neglected by many.
Almost every religion teaches the overall importance of morality, defining the need for one to
protect themselves and others from the dangers that are present in the world. However, many
religions have conflicting views on the ideals that are not related to morality. For example, Judaism
teaches that the Messiah, or Son of God, has yet to arrive on Earth, while Christianity teaches that
the Messiah had already appeared as Jesus Christ, and they are awaiting the Second Coming. This is
a very contradictory aspect of either faith, and would be expected to cause much rage between the
two faiths. Yet, this anger has been subsided through the very similar teachings of both religions.
Both Judaism and Christianity have sacred text known as the Ten Commandments, which are
religious laws emphasizing the importance of morality and, of course, faith. Through this book, I
will be identifying the various world religions and ideals, from Judaism to Hinduism to Satanism,
and expanding upon the various factors that make these religions unique. These factors include,
what each religion has to offer, what the differences are among religions, and what each teaches.
However, the primary focus of this book is to emphasize that the continuing arguments among
religious groups are absolutely unnecessary,

Various religions Essay
Throughout the Hindu and Christian religion various rituals are performed by followers. These
rituals allow the followers to celebrate in their beliefs. The most popular practice performed in
almost every religion is prayer and or meditation. Prayer and meditation allow followers to come
together and praise a God or gods. Hinduism has commonly been viewed as a polytheistic religion,
one that worships multiple deities: gods and goddesses, while Christianity is a Monotheistic
tradition.
Hindus believe in the repetitious transmigration of the soul. This is the transfer of one's soul after
death into another body. This produces a continuing cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth ... Show

You would love the deity not in the Christian God–like sense, but as you would love a friend, parent,
or a child, Christians do not practice yoga as a form of prayer or meditation, but rather gather
weekly to meet for worship in commemoration of the Lord Jesus' resurrection. They rejoice and
reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus. Prayer is a form of meditation for Christians because it
requires observance and concentration. When we pray to God we are observing his power and
concentrate on what it is we wish to reflect on. Christians pray to God to repent on certain acts that
are sinful, by asking God for forgiveness one will be saved and given eternal life.
Hindus believe for everything you do wrong you will be punished. For every action, there is an
equal and opposite reaction, if not in this life, then the next. The yoga discipline allows, through
pure acts, thoughts and devotion, one can be reborn at a higher level. Christians, on the other hand
do not believe in rebirth, but rather eternal happiness in the afterlife. Our afterlife being heaven or
hell. Both religions have very distinct beliefs and are extremely opposite but their idea for prayer
and meditation is similar. Both religions use the daily ritual of prayer and or meditation as an act of
reflection and a process for reaching the ultimate goal of an ideal

What are some major attributes of Latin American Catholicism? Identify and describe at least two
distinctions and include how they are distinct from Catholicism elsewhere.
The Central American War had changed the priorities of the Catholic Church in Latin America. In
the 1980's, the clergy's had decided to go against the Catholic Church mainly the Vatican despite the
various threats, and began to help the poor which were struggling for their equality and their rights.
The Catholic activism was in support of the change; however, it did influence guerilla movements in

How have churches fostered or hindered social changes in Latin America?
After the civil war, Latin Americans had turned to other religions. For over 500 years, many Latin
Americans were considered loyal to the Catholic religions. However, it quickly turned to be a
stronghold to Protestants. In the Liberation area other religions had developed such as Evangelical
and Pentecostal. These religions are very different from the Catholicism. These religions speak in
tongue, rely on baptism, accept the Holy Spirit, and emotional rituals.
With these new religions developing the social changes in Latin America does provide a much
broader outlook on their beliefs. There are various groups or community gatherings within the
particular religion. Each religion unites and brings together their faith and social aspects within their
own community.
How has Protestantism spread in Latin America in the past? Is it different than the factors that are
promoting the current growth in Protestantism in this region? How and why? The Protestantism had
spread in Latin America in the past due to the fact of various discrepancies within the Catholic
Religion. For instance, in 1980's, the Guatemalan's had begun to change their beliefs and lean more

The Swedish are established in the Italian colony of Erythracea and the Norwegians have an
important mission in Betsileo. The English though, have had a long history of missions in Africa.
Some of the more important ones are: The London Missionary Society, which was established in
1795. This church was primarily felt in South Africa with Moffat and Dr. Livingstone. Also was the
Universities Mission Society, which was based in Zanzibar. The French Protestants were successful
in the Northeastern Cape Colony, and in the French Congo where the replaced the American
Presbyterians in 1892. Lets not forget America though; the Methodist Episcopal Church, The Baptist
church and the Presbyterian Church are all in Africa from America. The Methodists began the
colony of Liberia in 1820 but was only able to establish a permanent Bishopric there until 1858. The
Baptists have missions in Monrovia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Lagos. Presbyterians are very
influential also. In Egypt almost every village on the Nile is not without one of their schools. In light
of this, you can see that Christian Religions from all parts of the world flourished in Africa. The
second most widespread religion in Africa is Islam. Islam was introduced to Northern Africa in the

makes many arguments of why "religion poisons everything." The majority of the chapters in this
book discuss why he believes religion to be a manmade notion that has led to more trouble than
anything else in the world. Most of his focus is on the three Abrahamic religions of Christianity,
Islam, and Judaism but he does fit in criticism of other religions as well. The topics he chooses to

Christopher Hitchens makes the argument of the nonexistence of God by using the examples of the
faults of religion then he concludes his book with a chapter on a need for the abolishment of religion
to study human kind without its presence. Hitchens arguments begin strongly at the start of chapter
two. The themes of this chapter and that of chapter four deal with how religion is effective at ending
lives. The discussion in the second chapter revolves around the political situation in which violent
outbreaks have been caused by religious people. A good number of pages in this section deal with a
response to a question he was given. The question in Hitchens's words is "I was to imagine myself in
a strange city as the evening was coming on. Toward me I was to imagine that I saw a large group of
men approaching. Now– would I feel safer, or less safe, if I was to learn that they were just coming
from a prayer meeting?" (18). The answer from Hitchens is that he would be scared and the reason
he gives is due to his experiences from various places that have had struggles with politics that stem
from religious causes. His view on these conflicts leads him many times to the statement that
"religion poisons everything" (22). Chapter four talks of another way religion ends life in the form
of the risks they take on individual health. The first example he uses is that of polio vaccine. In

religion has evolved over the years into something now referred to as modern Christianity, it is still

religion. Today, around 80% of Japanese argue that they have no religion. This shows that these
progressive thoughts are interfering with the religious thoughts or even the basic belief in religion

It's inarguable that Islam is not the same as Buddhism, just as Christianity is not the same as

geographical origins, they all share the common goals of regulating, enlightening, and unifying
groups of people.
Hindu and Islamic literature resemble each other in their beliefs of self–enlightenment. Both
religions support finding God within yourself. The Sufis of Islam especially support finding God
within yourself instead of in a traditional place of worship (452). Hinduism strongly encourages

Hick´s Hypothesis About Religions
Imagine that three people are all touching a part of an elephant. The first is touching the elephant's
leg and says that the elephant is like the truck of a tree. The second is touching the elephant's trunk
and disagrees with the first, saying that the elephant is like a large snake. The third person is
touching the elephant's side and says that the elephant is like a great wall.
Each person is convinced that they are right and the others are wrong because of what they know
and have experienced. What they don't realize is that they are all technically right because they are
each describing a different aspect of the elephant. The same analogy can be applied to the major
religions of the world.
In 1973, John Hick discussed the idea for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hick devotes an entire chapter in An Interpretation of Religion to discussing them, noting three
levels on which religious traditions disagree: (1) matters of historical fact, (2) matters of trans–
historical fact, and (3) differing conceptions of the Real.
Hick claims that these disagreements can be resolved by applying the historical method but it proves
to be difficult. One reason is because many historical claims have no independent historical support
outside the religion that makes the claim. Hick reasons that historical differences just must be
accepted, especially when they are not over central articles of faith. Hick's basic argument is that
most historical disagreements cannot be resolved and since many of these disagreements are not
related to the essence of any religion, concludes that resolving them is not critical and ultimately
they do not create a problem for his pluralistic hypothesis. Later in is his book, Hick considers
conflicting trans–historical truth–claims. He defines them as having to do with questions to which
there is, in principle, a true answer but which cannot be established by historical or other empirical
evidence. Two examples are the nature of the universe and the fate of human beings at death.
The nature of the universe, as Hick claims, has primarily been a dispute between theistic and non–
theistic religions. This is a dispute to which there is, in principle, one valid answer. However, the
question cannot

India Is A South Asian Country Where People Hold Various...
India is a South Asian country where people hold various castes and religions. After India gained
independence, the Constitution of India listed backward castes of the people as Scheduled Castes
(SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The Constitution laid down 15% and 7.5% of vacancies to
government aided educational institutes and for jobs in the government/public sector, as reserved
quota for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes candidates respectively for a period of five
years, after which the situation was to be reviewed. Reservation, in Indian law is a form of
affirmative action whereby a percentage of seats are reserved in the public sector units, union and
state civil services, union and state government departments and in all public and private
educational institutions, except in the religious or linguistic minority educational institutions, for the
socially and educationally backward communities and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. The
common refrain tends to be that less qualified people from backward castes in the field of education
and employment get preferential treatment because of caste based reservations. My argument is that
allocating reservation quotas on the basis of castes is a form of discrimination which is contrary to
the right to equality. Reservations on the basis of caste should be reformed as these reservations
create discrimination, and the people of the upper castes who truly deserve the opportunity lose it
because the reservation is already

Essay about Of Miracles by David Hume

In David Hume?s paper ?Of Miracles,? Hume presents a various number of arguments concerning
why people ought not to believe in any miracles. Hume does not think that miracles do not exist it is
just that we should not believe in them because they have no rational background. One of his
arguments is just by definition miracles are unbelievable. And have no rational means in believing
miracles. Another argument is that most miracles tend to come from uncivilized countries and the
witnesses typically have conflicts of interest and counterdict each others experiences. Both of these
arguments are valid however they tend to be weak. I think that Hume?s strongest argument is that he
claims there is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This argument is seen by society to be far fetched, because most people have a certain belief in a
certain religion and have somewhat a belief in miracles, but Hume has a good argument. He says
that people should not believe in religions that are based on miracles because they have no
credibility. Miracles themselves are thought to have weak credibility because the majority of the
people in the society think that they are false. However there are many people that believe in
miracles in one way or another. Either directly or indirectly. If you affiliate yourself with a religion
that is based on miracles then you are indirectly a believer in miracles. This is what Hume would
think and also he would say that you should not believe in the miracles because they are the basis of
your religion and have no credibility due to the fact that the religion is trying to destroy another
religion and their miracles.
Even though Hume has a good argument, one could make an argument that Hume is wrongly saying
that we ought not to believe in religions based on miracles. Religion is a major part of society. The
majority of the world has faith in a religion and it thought to believe in miracles. Also religion has
helped the world grow to where it is today and if Hume says that we should not have even believed
in religion, then society would not have grown and developed into various civilizations. Religion
brings mass amount of people together, and most of the time they

Sociological Functionalism And The Functions Of Religion

  • 1. Sociological Functionalism And The Functions Of Religion Sociological prospective on religion explains the functions of religion perform, the inequality and other it can buildup and maintain and the role it plays in our daily life. Theoretical Prospective: Structural Functionalism: Functionalism is a theoretic scheme used in sociology which explains the social order, the relationship between different parts and their role in stability of the society. When it is applied to the sociological study of religion, this approach explains religion as functional body within society because it forms social cohesion and integration by disclosing the bonds between people. Different theorist like Emile Durkheim views religion as functional stuff. Religious rituals shows the spiritual convictions of the representatives of the religions and help to enhance the belongingness of the individuals to the groups. Such religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Durkheim's vision continues to control sociological thinking today on the functions of religion. Firstly, religion gives meaning and purpose to life. Most of the things in life are hard to recognize. That was surely true, as we came to know in early times, but even in today's highly scientific age, most of life and death remains unknown, and religious faith and belief help many people make sense of the things science cannot tell us. Secondly, religion reinforces social unity and stability. This was is Durkheim's most important vision. Religion enhances social stability in two ways. As it gives people a general set of beliefs and hence is an essential agent of socialization. Moreover the collective practice of religion, such as in houses of worship, brings people of various religions together physically which facilitates their communication and other social interference thus promotes their social ... • 3. The Importance Of Religion In Public Education Religion has always been a major societal force. Though it helped define, shape, and lead cultures as a prominent component of a well–rounded education in the past, in the modern day, we have discarded religious teaching in public education in favor of progressive, accurate, practical, and provable knowledge. Most people, including educators, students, and the parental figures of students, agree that the best way to educate students is in such a manner. The issue, however surprising, still stands, and is the source of big political discourse throughout the country. Some states, and some of the political figures that drive the educational system, are in favor of continuing the in–depth studies of religion in the classroom. The people in this group vary, some prefer sticking to one religion to teach as compared to many. The Knightly Herald's Olivia Godfrey presents this controversial topic in her article, titled, "Why Religion Should Not Be Taught in Public Schools." In the article, Godfrey defends the idea that religion should be kept out of a public education, and that rather, religion should be left entirely in the hands of a student's life at home. Government, be it state or federal, has no place in having a say of what kind of religious education a student receives. It is a personal and familial matter that differs from person to person, culture to culture. Godfrey unpacks and addresses, with the help of appeals to common sense, and familiarity, the various perspectives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Is Monotheism A Polytheistic Religion Nachamada Roya Simon 250798336 RS 1023E World Religions Hinduism in India as a polytheistic Religion Is Hinduism a polytheistic or monotheistic religion? This question has lingered in the minds of many individuals and they have given their various thoughts about it. Some people believe that Hinduism is monotheistic because the Hindus believe that ultimately all is one, but looking at it from my point of view I am convinced that Hinduism is a polytheistic religion because they have a pantheon of gods and goddess for different purposes; they also have different sacred texts for various reasons for their different gods. The Major Sociological Theoretical Perspectives The major social institution I choose to discuss through the lens of the three major sociological theoretical perspectives of (1) structural functionalism, (2) symbolic interactionism, and (3) conflict theory is religion. (1) Structural Functionalism: Functionalists sees society as a system of parts that all serve a function. I think that religion serves a few functions for society. First of all, religion creates this sort of common ground for people to share creating this sense of solidarity amongst them. Also, religion seems to work as a sort of incentive for people to do good in the world. The ideas of religions (such as the idea of an afterlife) helps to put purpose into people's lives – it gives them a reason to live. To me, this perspective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. All About Religion and Spirituality Question 1– What is Religion? Before deciding on the definition, I considered religion as being an "organised system of beliefs, ceremonies and rules to worship a god or a higher being". The only phrase that I agreed with was the fact of religion being an "organised system" mainly because of the fact that there is a set way of practising the religion by, for example, praying and attending mass. In contradiction, the rest of the definition makes it seem as if religion is straight–forward on a community basis, in contrast to a personal one. Use of "a god or a higher being" contradicts the idea of polytheism, associated with religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism (Theism.net, 2014). As a result, I believe that the best definition of religion is "a set of guidelines that defines who you are, whether or not you worship a god or gods. Religion varies from person to person and is based on personal faith and it is also greater than its followers and allows individuals to explore the true meaning of life" (Nguyen and Ibaviosa et al., 2014) The reason I chose this definition is due to the fact that it is a collaborative definition that has been compiled by utilising elements of other definitions about the word. This means that various perspectives of the meaning of religion have been taken into consideration, which therefore means that people are more likely to accept it. However, another reason that this definition stands out in particular is the "greater than its followers" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just like the title, Trevor Noah was born a crime. To explain, "During apartheid, one of the worst crimes you could commit was having relations with a person of another race...my parents committed that crime" (Noah 21). Trevor Noah was a mixed child. As a child, he had difficulties fitting in, but that didn't stop him from identifying with both races. Trevor Noah became a chameleon. Although, some may say it's impossible to identify and relate to various cultures– Trevor Noah proved them wrong. He says, "My color didn't change, but I could change your perception of my color" (Noah 56). Trevor Noah used language and behavior tactics to become a cultural chameleon. Just like Trevor Noah, is able to adapt to his environment and culture; a chameleon is able to change its color to merge into his environment, as well. For example, Noah was fluent in many languages and that became one of his strongest tools. Noah explains "If you spoke to me in Zulu, I replied to you in Zulu... Maybe I didn't look like you, but if I spoke like you, I am you" (Noah 56). Language is a powerful tool used to unite various strangers to comfortable acquaintances. Apartheid knew this and "part of the effort to divide black people was to make sure we were separated not just physically but by language as well" (Noah 49) to further racism. Throughout Trevor Noah's life, he learned to use the tool of language to his benefit. Furthermore, Noah used his abilities to blend in during life endangering situations. For example, one day Noah overheard a group of Zulu guys plotting to mug this "white guy." Speaking Zulu, Noah was able to turn around and say "Yo, guys, why don't we just mug someone together" (Noah 55). The fact that Noah was able to speak Zulu, it saved him from an unfortunate experience. The boys realized he was just like one of them and decided not to harm him. Additionally, Noah and his mother was able to get out of a sticky situation in a store, because his mother was able to speak Afrikaans (Noah 55). Advertisements are found on billboards, radio, television, newspapers, logos on the sides of drinks, and even in restrooms. Ads are used to make people think that this is a must, to make them think that they need this or that they have to start doing this and that they should to be like this person or follow them. In America, we have freedom of religion, meaning that anyone can be of any religion or not follow any religion at all if they chose without being harassed or persecuted for their beliefs. God and various religions should not be used in promoting products, people and/or ideas. Companies use advertisements to promote their products with the basic principle that their product is the best in the market. God and various religions should not be used in advertising products because it is ethically wrong. If a company used God or a certain religion to promote their products they are basically saying that they know the direct word of God. They are also saying that the beliefs of one religious group's teachings and including the thoughts of the members of the religion are all in agreement of that specific product, that it is the best. Its successful emergence was due in part to the adoption and rejection of various factors which allowed Islam to mirror the socioeconomic trends, traditions, practices and religious theories that were prevalent throughout the region during this time period. One of the most influential events on the rise of Islam was in the rise of Mecca as a center of trade. Mecca's rise allowed people from various backgrounds to be exposed to and exchange ideas about culture, tradition and religion. All these ideas congealed in to some of the main concepts and ideas adopted by Islam. Yet Islam ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior to the rise of Islam most of the people of the Arabian Peninsula were polytheistic. Their beliefs consisted of multiple powers that governed a chaotic and disorganized world, which mirrored their view of society, man, and nature as separate elements. They worshiped various elements of life, like the moon, the sun, ancestors and nature. The situation was entirely different in the surrounding regions where there was a tectonic shift away from polytheism to monotheism. This influenced the Arabian Peninsula because it was sandwiched between the Christian Byzantine Empire and the Zoroastrian Sasanian Empire. The rise of Islam is quite logical in this religious climate. First and foremost the fact that Islam is a monotheistic religion represents the overall rise in popularity of monotheism and the decline of polytheism in the region. This was due in part to the religious changes that came with the rise of Mecca and the intermingling of people that I previously discussed. In this environment the idea of monotheism is introduced by traveling Christians and Jews. This along with other concepts, theories and ideas, allowed for people to shake of the mental, emotional, and religious restrains of the tribal society and envision new concepts of ... In the book "Religion and Making of Modern East Asia", Thomas Dubois brings to light the impact religion made on both politics and economy in China and Japan throughout the historical period up till date. In his words, he describes "religion as an extremely political force" (Dubois, 2011, pp. 7–16). The effect of Buddhism in China was one of the most profound changes China ever had, as it affected their economy. This time, economy brought about religion; Buddhism came into China through international trade. As South Asian countries came into China, they spread their religion which at that time was majorly Buddhism. To gain favor from the foreign traders, the emperors showed frivolities towards them. "Tang emperors spent huge sums of money on Buddhism" (Dubois, 2011, p. 34). They constructed Buddhist monasteries, excluded monks from taxes and lavished them with other benefits. In one sentence, the emperors at that time, sought to seek the face of Buddhist he monks at the expense of the economy. On a lighter note however, the spread of Buddhism increased the economy of China as it created revenue in trade. "Up till the twentieth century, Tang dynasty was the most cosmopolitan period of China's history. Politically, emperors had conflicts of interest and so alternatively chose Buddhism or Daoism in succession" (Dubois, p. 34). Worthy of mention is the Christianity in China. • 44. Religious Beliefs And The Bible Religious beliefs have been around for almost as long as man himself, emphasizing the importance of existential meaning. These beliefs hold very important values that are often neglected by many. Almost every religion teaches the overall importance of morality, defining the need for one to protect themselves and others from the dangers that are present in the world. However, many religions have conflicting views on the ideals that are not related to morality. For example, Judaism teaches that the Messiah, or Son of God, has yet to arrive on Earth, while Christianity teaches that the Messiah had already appeared as Jesus Christ, and they are awaiting the Second Coming. This is a very contradictory aspect of either faith, and would be expected to cause much rage between the two faiths. Yet, this anger has been subsided through the very similar teachings of both religions. Both Judaism and Christianity have sacred text known as the Ten Commandments, which are religious laws emphasizing the importance of morality and, of course, faith. Through this book, I will be identifying the various world religions and ideals, from Judaism to Hinduism to Satanism, and expanding upon the various factors that make these religions unique. These factors include, what each religion has to offer, what the differences are among religions, and what each teaches. The most popular practice performed in almost every religion is prayer and or meditation. Prayer and meditation allow followers to come together and praise a God or gods. Hinduism has commonly been viewed as a polytheistic religion, one that worships multiple deities: gods and goddesses, while Christianity is a Monotheistic tradition. You would love the deity not in the Christian God–like sense, but as you would love a friend, parent, or a child, Christians do not practice yoga as a form of prayer or meditation, but rather gather weekly to meet for worship in commemoration of the Lord Jesus' resurrection. They rejoice and reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus. Prayer is a form of meditation for Christians because it requires observance and concentration. When we pray to God we are observing his power and concentrate on what it is we wish to reflect on. Christians pray to God to repent on certain acts that are sinful, by asking God for forgiveness one will be saved and given eternal life. Hindus believe for everything you do wrong you will be punished. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, if not in this life, then the next. Each person is convinced that they are right and the others are wrong because of what they know and have experienced. Hick devotes an entire chapter in An Interpretation of Religion to discussing them, noting three levels on which religious traditions disagree: (1) matters of historical fact, (2) matters of trans– historical fact, and (3) differing conceptions of the Real. Hick claims that these disagreements can be resolved by applying the historical method but it proves to be difficult. One reason is because many historical claims have no independent historical support outside the religion that makes the claim. Hick reasons that historical differences just must be accepted, especially when they are not over central articles of faith. Hick's basic argument is that most historical disagreements cannot be resolved and since many of these disagreements are not related to the essence of any religion, concludes that resolving them is not critical and ultimately they do not create a problem for his pluralistic hypothesis. Later in is his book, Hick considers conflicting trans–historical truth–claims. He defines them as having to do with questions to which there is, in principle, a true answer but which cannot be established by historical or other empirical evidence. Two examples are the nature of the universe and the fate of human beings at death. After India gained independence, the Constitution of India listed backward castes of the people as Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Reservation, in Indian law is a form of affirmative action whereby a percentage of seats are reserved in the public sector units, union and state civil services, union and state government departments and in all public and private educational institutions, except in the religious or linguistic minority educational institutions, for the socially and educationally backward communities and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. The common refrain tends to be that less qualified people from backward castes in the field of education and employment get preferential treatment because of caste based reservations. My argument is that allocating reservation quotas on the basis of castes is a form of discrimination which is contrary to the right to equality. This argument is seen by society to be far fetched, because most people have a certain belief in a certain religion and have somewhat a belief in miracles, but Hume has a good argument. He says that people should not believe in religions that are based on miracles because they have no credibility. Miracles themselves are thought to have weak credibility because the majority of the people in the society think that they are false. However there are many people that believe in miracles in one way or another. Either directly or indirectly. If you affiliate yourself with a religion that is based on miracles then you are indirectly a believer in miracles. This is what Hume would think and also he would say that you should not believe in the miracles because they are the basis of your religion and have no credibility due to the fact that the religion is trying to destroy another religion and their miracles. Even though Hume has a good argument, one could make an argument that Hume is wrongly saying that we ought not to believe in religions based on miracles. Religion is a major part of society.
