Sociology links together the words socius and logy.
Socius = companion and logy = to study
So the term sociology means the study of human companionship.
Sociology has evolved over time and now covers many fields1.
According to the American Sociology Association, sociology is the
scientific study of society, including patterns of social relationships,
social interaction, and culture2.

Societalogy links together the words societal and logy.
Societal = societas, association and logy = to study
Societalogy thus studies societies as associations, or more
precisely, as organizations.
Specifically societalogy studies the relations between citizens and
the available societal resources present on the territory (natural,
human, abstract and transformed natural resources) and evaluate
how they affect the level of tensions, frictions and conflicts.
While societalogy also covers many fields, it differs from sociology
as it is a management science.

9. SOCIETAL RESOURCES
Societalogically speaking, societies are organizations and like any
other organization, societies use and manage resources.
• Natural: the earth and all its resources; air and water, the sun,
etc.
• Human: societalogy views human beings as social beings with
individual needs; citizens
• Abstract: language, knowledge, beliefs, laws, regulations,
know how, processes, etc.
• Transformed natural: houses, infrastructure, prepared food, etc.

10. WE ALL MANAGE SOCIETAL RESOURCES
Each day we make individual, group and collective decisions on
the societal resource we will or will not use. We do this either as:
• an individual citizen.
• a citizen associated to a group. For example, private, public or
not for profit organizations, or as a member of a sports team or
an informal group of friends.
• a citizen who is part owner of this organization, through the
decisions and actions made by our governments.
These decisions affect the different societal resources available.

12. SOCIETALOGY IS A TOOL
Like all sciences, societalogy is a tool. Societalogy is politically,
religiously and philosophically neutral and helps to:
• identify and evaluate the different societal resources that
citizens manage individually, in groups or collectively.
• study the evolution of any society anywhere in the world, at
any time in the development of the society, as its societal
resources evolve or devolve.
• evaluate the quality of a society on the basis of its
performance at reducing the different social tensions,
frictions and conflicts.

Societalogy helps to:
• identify and evaluate the different competences citizens
need to possess so that they can better fulfill their role as
co-owners of the societies they live in.
• evaluate projects to see if they have a positive societal
return on investment.
