A small look into the genre which is ‘Social Realism’
2. Definition.
Social realism films are traditionally surrounding
contemporary social issues, characters and sets. They
normally feature characters found within the boundaries of
modern societies and also consider the different problems
everyday people may be facing.
Social realist films are secular – They are about logic and
reasons rather than mysteries and other such things.
3. Typical Conventions.
- Traditionally include locating shots to set the scene.
- Very rarely contain well known actors/actresses, most
main roles are played by semi-professionals.
- Semi-improvised scripts to enable more characterisation.
- A mixture of both humour and seriousness to show
contrast and mixes of everyday emotions.
- Confrontation of wider social issues through dramatical
and emotional stories.
- Usually follow the viewpoint of a specific character.

These are all strong examples of social realism films and
convey some of/all of the before mentioned conventions.
