2. MIDDLE CLASS
 To show that our characters, Peter and Claire Watt, are
middle class we placed them in a house that is clearly
looked after and wealthy.
 We also portrayed them as middle class by the use of
clothing. This was quite smart and signified what their
jobs could be. High importance and professionalism is
signified by the shirt and tie which Peter is seen wearing.
Also, Claire is dressed in
smart clothes which could
connote to the audience she
has a good job that earns
quite a bit of money.

3. MIDDLE CLASS
 The briefcase Peter carries is very professional and can
have connotations of secretive work like a detective. When
the suitcase is in frame it is almost always central
connoting it is important to the plot of the film and also
creates enigma as we don’t know what he keeps in there
but we want to find out.

4. GENDER
 At the beginning of the opening we see a dead woman on
the bed and the supposed killer standing next to her dead
body. This is reinforcing the ideology of a patriarchal
society. the woman is submissive to the man and weak as
she has unsuccessfully beat the man. This is
metaphorically showing how men rule over the woman in
society and have a higher, more important role in society
then woman.

5. GENDER
 We also show the woman going out a lot which reinforces
the stereotype that woman are seen as provocative and
that they aren’t loyal to their significant other. However
this challenges the patriarchal views that society holds
because it is showing women standing up to men and
doing what they want rather than being controlled by men
and having little choice.

6. WHITE BRITISH
ETHNICITY
 We have only presented white British people in out production as we
wanted to challenge the stereotype that it is only the ethnic minorities
that are portrayed as dangerous, going against Alvarado’s 4 stereotypes
of ethnicities as we portray white British characters as dangerous
through Peter Watt but also as pitied through Claire Watt.
 We showed that the white male in the opening was the antagonist, which
also challenges the stereotype that the antagonist is usually a non-
British male, and we showed that he was the one who was the
murderer by showing him wielding a
knife connoting he has just
committed the murder.
 We wanted to challenge this stereotype to show that we are all just as
bad as each other and there is no difference just because of a person’s
ethnicity.
