Social Accounting from a Social Movement Theory PerspectiveColin Dey
This document discusses social accounting from the perspective of social movement theory. It examines how social accounting movements engage in critical interventions through various activist communities. It also discusses framing techniques used by social movements, such as diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational framing. Framing contests around issues like climate change and health inequality are explored. The role of social accounting in these framing contests is questioned. Towards developing a typology of "shadow accounts" and their use as framing processes.
Social accounting measures an organization's social and environmental performance to further its objectives and values. It involves stakeholders to understand the organization's impacts, measure performance both quantitatively and qualitatively, and report accurately to improve over time. Traidcraft, a fair trade organization, publishes social accounts with goals like increasing purchases from developing countries, especially Africa, and the proportion of sales price returned to producers. Its direct impacts include the volume and regional breakdown of purchases from supplier organizations, and its indirect impacts include influencing policies and attitudes towards poverty alleviation.
The document discusses social accounting, which is communicating the social and environmental effects of organizations' actions to interested groups. It provides background on the history and definition of social accounting. The purposes are accountability, management, and control. Social accounting involves formal reporting and third party audits on areas like resources, employees, society, customers, and investors. Benefits include feedback and identifying strengths and weaknesses. Challenges for small organizations are the time and resources required. The process involves three steps - scoping values and stakeholders, designing the accounting system, and reporting and responding to results. An example of social accounting by Waterloo Co-operative Residence Incorporated is provided.
Using Bioline International as a case study, this paper examines the relationship between social accounting and Open Access, and argues for the need of rethinking the value chain and what counts in scholarly communication, particularly for journals from the developing world.

Social accounting is a process that communicates the social and environmental impacts of an organization's economic actions to stakeholders. It emphasizes corporate accountability and reporting on social performance. Social accounting aims to broaden conventional accounting to include non-economic impacts and account to a wider group of stakeholders rather than just shareholders. It provides alternative information to financial accounting about an organization's effects on society and the environment.
Human resource accounting involves identifying, measuring, and communicating the value of a company's human resources. It assigns a cost to recruiting and training employees based on their expected future value and reflects this in financial statements. The main approaches to valuing human resources are historical cost, replacement cost, and present value of future earnings. Human resource accounting provides information to management for decision making and helps monitor the effective use of human resources. While practiced in some large Indian companies, it is not yet widely used.
This document discusses social accounting and national income accounting. Social accounting is a method of studying the structure of an economy by presenting financial information about sectors such as production, consumption, government, capital, and foreign trade. It aims to provide insight into a society's prosperity and guide collective economic policy decisions. Functional accounts track the monetary flows between sectors and can include production, consumption, government, capital, and foreign accounts. Social accounting helps understand the overall economic structure and compare contributions of different sectors. However, it also faces difficulties related to imputing monetary values for certain activities and avoiding double-counting between sectors.
