INTRODUCTION
 Emerged over last 15 to 20 years. Grown from
niche to mass online activity.
 Users can create profile and connect with others to
create personal network.
 Use this network to form online community or forum
with users of similar interests.
 Facilitated quick communication on simple click of
button.
 Although with many advantages, also brought up
some change in social behavior and approaches.
HISTORY OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
1.Early years :
• First SNS Sixdegrees.com launched in 1997 but
failed to become sustainable business.
• From 1999 to 2001- Friendster, Linkedin, Hi5 are
launched.
2.Hit the Mainstream: User choice-based Websites
launched
• Photo Sharing- Flickr, Instagram
• Video Sharing- Snapchat, Youtube, Vine
• Profile Based- Myspace, Orkut, Twitter, facebook
3. Global Phenomenon:
• Earlier Launched Websites restricted to specific
regions like
Friendster- Pacific Islands, Orkut- Brazil before
rapidly growing in India.
• Launched of Facebook in September 2005:
Crossed the geographical and demographical
boundaries.
• Now each SNS has global potential, as they allow
cross-border connectivity between users from
different cultures.
BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIAL
NETWORKING SITES
 Presentation of oneself :
Setting up personalized profile thru texts, photos,
music and videos.
 Free of Charge:
Open for anyone to join and free of charge (esp.
Basic features)
 Easy of Use:
Major attribute is simplicity, anyone with basic skills
can create & manage.
o New ways for community formation:
Virtual membership based on similar interests.
PURPOSE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
 To maintain “Latent Ties”: Who share some offline
connections.
 Allow to meet individual virtually worldwide.
 Text/Video Blogs, micro-blogging sites, forums
where members express themselves.
 Some websites help to find job or create business
and professional contacts.
 Academic websites where students, researchers
can share their work.
IMPACTS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
 Positive Impacts:
• Speedy communication
• Increase empathy for their friends and relatives
• Establishing connectivity with old friends and In
touch with individual worldwide
• Views on Social and cultural Issues (Change.org)
• Awareness towards national and political issues.
(Anna Andolan, India Against Corruption etc)
• Familiarity with new technology and other electronic
devices.
• Promoting artistic-creative abilities and instant
feedback.
 Negative:
• Reduced in learning and research capabilities.
• Reduction in command over language and
vocabulary.
• Reduction in focus and attention due to
Multitasking.
• Reduction in real human contact as a result poor
communication skills.
• Loss of motivation- rely on virtual environment
instead of gaining practical knowledge.
• Adverse effect on Health- Insomnia, loss of
appetite.
ETHICAL DUTY OF USERS
 Should be aware about rights and moral
responsibilities.
 Should complain about illegal communication and
activities.
 Respect privacy of Members.
 Respect authentication.
 Maintain credibility and ownership.
 Sensitivity to national and local culture.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
 To study the impact of usage of social networking
sites on Indian Youth.
• Identify and assessing the resultant impact on their
social interactions and social behavior.
• Study the effect on learning and studies.
• Establishing new identity in Virtual World.
• The awareness towards cyber laws and cyber
crimes.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
 Structure interview schedule- involve set of
standardized & pre-determined questions.
 To ensure all respondents reply to same questions
with same meaning for all.
 Simple random sampling method used to study
population. (Sample Size of 60)
 In study, direct observation and participatory
observation method used.
Direct- family members, peer group, friends.
Participatory- Active member in one more websites
& community.
DATA STUDY AND ANALYSIS

youth.
Usage of Social networking
sites: exposed for varying
duration of time due to
various reasons- Internet
connectivity at home,
residing at hostel with no
Internet provisions etc
 Why do they use social networking sites?
• To show happening lifestyle (not close to reality)
• To keep in touch with family and friends.
• To post updates, chat and discuss on certain topics.
• Replacement of book reading or outdoor games.
o Reasons behind the attractions towards these sites
?
• To be in part of peer circle and more about following the trend.
• To know about other cultures and individual.
• To create new identity and personality.
• To gain popularity in friends circle.

communities and photo
sharing by 30%.
youth at these sites give high
priority to their personal
preferences and likeness in
comparison to other logical or
rational reasons.
majority of them tried to
establish their
identity/personality different
from real world.
 How friend list, comments & Likes on SNS
important?
• For some it does as it shows popularity.
• Initially it is but after being old user doesn’t matter.
• Its importance depend on coming from whom.
• Sometimes too abusive comments changes the mood.
o Experience with Social networking sites?
• Depend on age groups answer varies: Early youth group-
They enjoy it and consider it fun part of life.
• Late youth group- mixed (you experience both notions fun,
bullying & abusiveness)
“Not that shiny as it appears.”
Youth knows how to keep
balance between real life and
virtual world , 47 % denied said
sometimes it helps ,few agreed
with effect and 33% were not
sure about it.
Majority of them accepted that
somehow its affecting their
studies. (lack of concentration,
keeping up with trends, reduction
in creativity thinking ability)
Cyber bullying, Cyber Crimes and
Privacy are causes of such
studies, study shows that people
are not fully aware of cyber laws
and internet security policies.
CONCLUSION OF STUDY
 Today’s youth don’t know what life would be like
without Social networking sites.
 They use likely to get positive boost but end up
getting socially isolated.
 Social life and social behavior gets affected at
some extent.
 Being “Digital Natives” still prefer hanging out with
each other in person.
As Quoted “ Moments only happen in person”
 Digital communication shaping interpersonal
relationship and social skills.
* At the cost of losing real identity, privacy, creativity
etc.
 Aware of websites privacy & security settings.
 Do not have understanding for cyber laws and
cyber crimes.
* Concern are real- breach of privacy, hate speech,
body image shaming, bullying to name a few.
 Focus on ethical use: SNS can be boon or curse in
long course of time.
FUTURE PERSPECTIVES IN PHD
 Information and Communication Technology will be
important factor.
 Use as axes of differentiation for Migration and
Transnational based study.
 Establishing connectivity among migrant and
transnational population.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY  Structure interview schedule- involve set of standardized & pre-determined questions.  To ensure all respondents reply to same questions with same meaning for all.  Simple random sampling method used to study population. (Sample Size of 60)  In study, direct observation and participatory observation method used. Direct- family members, peer group, friends. Participatory- Active member in one more websites & community.

  • 17.  How friend list, comments & Likes on SNS important? • For some it does as it shows popularity. • Initially it is but after being old user doesn’t matter. • Its importance depend on coming from whom. • Sometimes too abusive comments changes the mood. o Experience with Social networking sites? • Depend on age groups answer varies: Early youth group- They enjoy it and consider it fun part of life. • Late youth group- mixed (you experience both notions fun, bullying & abusiveness) “Not that shiny as it appears.”
  • 18. Youth knows how to keep balance between real life and virtual world , 47 % denied said sometimes it helps ,few agreed with effect and 33% were not sure about it. Majority of them accepted that somehow its affecting their studies. (lack of concentration, keeping up with trends, reduction in creativity thinking ability) Cyber bullying, Cyber Crimes and Privacy are causes of such studies, study shows that people are not fully aware of cyber laws and internet security policies.

CONCLUSION OF STUDY  Today’s youth don’t know what life would be like without Social networking sites.  They use likely to get positive boost but end up getting socially isolated.  Social life and social behavior gets affected at some extent.  Being “Digital Natives” still prefer hanging out with each other in person. As Quoted “ Moments only happen in person”
