The document discusses the SNIA Emerald Power Efficiency Measurement Specification and SNIA Emerald Program. It describes how the specification provides a standardized methodology and metrics for measuring the energy efficiency of storage systems through idle and active testing. It also establishes a taxonomy for classifying different types of storage systems. The SNIA Emerald Program allows vendors to submit test results according to the specification for publication in a test data report.

Accelerated Test Case Automation Using Rational Functional Tester
1. Novellus Systems faced challenges with frequent software releases and manual testing taking too long. They started with basic automation using Mercury WinRunner but it only achieved 15% coverage.
2. They adopted a new approach using Rational Functional Tester with a modular test framework architecture. This allowed test cases to be written independently of application development and improved reusability.
3. The new approach saved around 60% of effort and allowed achieving over 70% test coverage. Proxies were developed for custom controls not recognized by RFT to improve recognition. Enhanced logging and documentation also improved maintenance.
Software functional testing can unveil a wide range of potential malfunctions in applications. However, there is a significant fraction of errors that will be hardly detected through a traditional testing process. Problems such as memory corruptions, memory leaks, performance bottlenecks, low-level system call failures and I/O errors might not surface any symptoms in a tester’s machine while causing disasters in production. On the other hand, many handy tools have been emerging in all popular platforms allowing a tester or an analyst to monitor the behavior of an application with respect to these dark areas in order to identify potential fatal problems that would go unnoticed otherwise. Unfortunately, these tools are not yet in widespread use due to few reasons. First, the usage of tools requires a certain amount of expertise on system internals. Furthermore, these monitoring tools generate a vast amount of data even with elegant filtering and thereby demand a significant amount of time for an analysis even from experts. As the end result, using monitoring tools to improve software quality becomes a costly operation. Another facet of this problem is the lack of infrastructure to automate recurring analysis patterns.
This paper describes the current state of an ongoing research in developing a framework that automates a significant part of the process of monitoring various quality aspects of a software application with the utilization of tools and deriving conclusions based on results. According to our knowledge this is the first framework to do this. It formulates infrastructure for analysts to extract relevant data from monitoring tool logs, process those data, make inferences and present analysis results to a wide range of stakeholders in a project.
It is mandatory for every medicine or pharma packaging to have a unique serial code or UID. Project is to build a web application that will provide tracking capabilities for the UID for pharma packaging of drugs. The track feature (TRACK n trace) will track the UID of each package by using vision based scanners, RFIDs, etc. and store the data into a local server. The server will be synced daily with a global server (we are looking for cloud based hosting platforms such as Windows Azure or amazon web services). We have to build the trace functionality (Track n TRACE) by building a web interface where a person with the UID can trace the shipment.
We have to keep historical records for as long as 10 years and build logic on basis of the UID state. We have to provide the details from the database as in when was this package manufactured, when was it shipped, etc. If the UID entered is faulty for example; it wasn’t ever manufactured or if it is over its expiration date then we have to generate corresponding errors and also maintain a log of such entries and send notification to the admins with details of IP, Geography or where the error generated.
Dependable Operation - Performance Management and Capacity Planning Under Con...Liming Zhu
This document discusses approaches for managing systems undergoing continuous changes, such as those from continuous deployment in cloud environments. It proposes incorporating knowledge about sporadic operations and external events into system management. For sporadic operations, it describes Process-Oriented Dependability (POD) for error detection and diagnosis during operations like rolling upgrades. It also discusses using process context for alert management and availability analysis of sporadic operations. For external events, it discusses event-aware workload prediction. The goal is to better support operations personnel through performance engineering techniques that account for changes and uncertainty in cloud systems.

A storage array consists of a large number of disk drives together with a storage controller. Many servers can be connected to a storage array, which allows any of the disk drives to be used by any server. Data is read from the disk and written to the disk with a read/write heads (Figure 1). The disk spins at between 7,200rpm and 15,000rpm. The heads are moved across the recording surface of the disk to different tracks where the data is stored.

The Data lake hidden in your backups - Big Data Expo 2019webwinkelvakdag
Data warehouse projects have an alarmingly high failure rate – leading analysts estimate anywhere from 50% to 64% over the last 15 years. These projects don’t fail from a lack of good tools in the market. They fail because of the time, expense, and complexity of centralizing, storing, updating, and transforming enterprise data so that it can be unlocked for other uses.
But what if you had already built a data lake covering all of your production workloads, with data stretching back for months or years and updated daily? What if this data lake was accessible, easily portable, and available for analysis using any set of tools? And what if the expense and staffing to create and maintain this data lake was already part of your budget and had been for years?
Your organization’s backup data represents exactly this resource. We all have backups to recover from outages, human error, malware, and disasters. But imagine you could take advantage of your backup data in order to:
Analyze historical data sets with no impact on production workloads
Migrate workloads into the cloud to take advantage of cloud-based analytics resources
Fully automate DevOps processes using daily backup data
Perform ransomware and compliancy checks and audits
Comply with GDPR data subject access requests (DSAR’s)
And numerous other use cases…
Symantec's appliance strategy provides customers with a flexible and easy to deploy delivery model for its data protection, storage management and security solutions. This new approach empowers organizations to choose between appliances, software or cloud solutions according to what best suits their IT requirements, needs and environment. With the release of the NetBackup 5020 deduplication appliance, NetBackup 5200 series and FileStore N8300 appliances, Symantec delivers on the company’s strategy.
Where does it go from here? The role of software in digital repositoriesNeil Chue Hong
The open repositories community has made great strides in recent years in addressing interoperability, policy and providing the arguments for open access and sharing. One aspect of open research which has come to prominence is the importance of software as a fundamental part of reproducible research, which in turn raises issues around the preservation of software.
In this short presentation, I will describe some of the work that the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) has been doing to address the structural and policy issues which currently present a barrier to the deposit and use of software in open repositories.

Protecting Data in an Era of Content Creation – Presented by Softchoice + EMCSoftchoice Corporation
This presentation was delivered during the February and March Discovery Series events titled “Protecting Data in an Era of Content Creation” sponsored by EMC.
Storage budgets are only growing 3-4% per year, but data is growing 30-40% per year – so in five years you will have to manage roughly five times as much data, with roughly the same budget. This data is also being accessed by more people, from more places and in new ways. The end result is that some of the old-standby approaches to protecting data are no longer cost effective or manageable. This presentation looks at the strategies IT can employ to provide adequate levels of protection and availability in a very different data management environment.

Measurement Specification
! Taxonomy: An industry-wide means of segmenting
storage systems for products that span the range from
consumer solutions to enterprise configurations which
will be used to categorize the test results.
! Test Methodology: A detailed and consistent means
of testing various types of storage systems with load
generators and power measurement instruments.
! Test Metrics - Idle Measurement Test: The idle
test applies to storage systems and components which
are configured, powered up, connected to one or
more hosts and capable of satisfying externally
initiated, application-level initiated IO requests within
normal response time constraints, but no such IO
requests are being submitted.
! Test Metrics - Active Measurement Test:
Testing of storage products and components are said
to be in an active state when they are processing
externally initiated, application-level requests for data
transfer between host(s) and the storage product(s).
! Capacity Optimization: The specification and
program test report do address disclosing
configuration information for the system under test
about energy-saving storage capacity optimizations
that the system may have including features such as
deduplication and thin provisioning.
