SNAP Island Harvest Volunteer
Opportunities
On May 14th the National Association of Letter Carriers’ held their 24th
annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger®’ food drive. In the nation’s largest one-day
food drive, NALC members and volunteers collected donated food in
10,000 cities across the country. In preparation, every postal address
in the country received a post card requesting that the residents leave
non-perishable food by their mailbox for their letter carrier to pick up.
Although the collection results have not yet been released, it is estimated
that this year will exceed the 71 million pounds (estimated $150 million)
that was raised last year.

Healthfirst, a New York Health Insurance Company held a spring festival
in Hempstead on Saturday May 12th. They provided health screenings fun
recreational activities. Island Harvest offered SNAP Application Assistance
and Nutrition awareness. We also offered microwave Granola and recipes
to go along with it.

The USDA clarified that states
should exempt all levels of VA
disability, which will help vul-
nerable veterans retain their
SNAP benefits.

In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of living a healthy
and holistic life, Central Islip held their 7th annual Health and
Wellness Fair. Island Harvest participated by offering SNAP Ap-
plication Assistance and Nutrition Awareness. We also donated
200 water bottles.

When the recession hit in
2008, nearly every state
in the US received waivers
removing the time limit for
people receiving SNAP ben-
efits. Due to the improving
economy, this time waiver
has expired in 20 states
as of June 1st. Now, non-
working adult recipients will
now only be allowed three
months of SNAP benefits within a three-year period. It is estimated that this
change will affect 500,000 to 1 million SNAP recipients. Although letters
were sent out to inform recipients of the change, many were still unaware.
Removal of SNAP
Time Waiver
to Nicole Crofton for her involvement with the SNAP
Newsletters, Summer Food Service Program, and
SNAP Application Assistance.
She is currently attending Gettyburg College and is
doing an internship with Island Harvest this summer.
A special thank you
The 2017 House Budget Committee-approved plan would cut
SNAP by $150 billion, or 20 percent, over the next 10 years. This
would be adding on to the SNAP cuts that have already occurred
recently and that are presently occurring. Such an extensive cut of
funding would result in reductions and even terminations of food
assistance for millions of low-income families. This plan’s SNAPS
cuts would surely increase the hunger and poverty of the nation’s
poorest residents.
