- What are Smartwatches? They’re essentially a wearable computer in the form of a watch, strapped around your wrist, chock-full of productive apps and features. While watches have been around for a far longer period of time, smartwatches as electrically powered and with digital screens as we know it first appeared in the early 1990’s. However, it was only in recent years have Smartwatches and Smartwatch technology improved to move the Smartwatch from niche to popular. - There are many features, characteristics, and functions that leading Smartwatch’s are expected to have. In this word map you can see a few including Health, Exercise & Fitness, Time, Apps, and goals.
- These are some of the most popular smartwatch companies that sell their products in major retailer stores (like BestBuy). There are a lot of other smartwatch companies, but we decided on these recognizable names in the North American region.
- The apple watch series 6 is the premium offering from Apple which comes with ECG heart monitors, Oxygen sensors, and a stylish build. It has an always on display, fairly accurate fitness tracking, sleeping tracking, and good for supporting third party applications. Third party applications can cover the shortcomings of some features that is not already on the watch which is good for things such as google maps, strava (biking applications), and other health apps. However, It has the shortest battery life of all products at about 18 hours, and does not have all the features when connected with a non apple device. - The Apple watch SE is the more affordable Apple option with all the essentials. It has all the features that that the series 6 has except the Oxygen monitor, ECG monitor, always on display. It is built using a lower quality screen, and comes in fewer colours. - The Samsung Galaxy watch 3 is the more expensive offering from Samsung. It has features like oxygen monitoring, ECG monitoring, sleep tracking. It has okay third party support compared to apple watches, and is very customizable, easy to stay connected, and stylish. It is swim proof, and fairly lightweight. - The galaxy watch active 2 shares many features of the Galaxy Watch 3, like the third party application support and customizability. But lacks the ECG, and blood oxygen monitoring found on the Galaxy 3. Battery life is variable at 24-60 hours, still relatively poor compared to Fitbit and Garmin. - Fitbit offers a more ‘purist’ selection of smartwatch products, given that they do not own a phone brand, hence the name. The Fitbit sense focuses on providing its users additional health features, including tools to measure stress levels, such as with electrodermal activity apps, skin temperature measurement, and mindfulness reminders/trackers. It has a 6+ day battery and biometric measures. However this model comes in few colours and some pricy subscription services. - The FitBit Versa 3 is similar to the Sense, but has reduced functionality, including not having the electrodermal activity measuring app for stress. However, the FitBit Versa 3 comes in more colours than its cousin, and has many other leading functions of a smartwatch, such as heart rate tracking, customizable watch faces, and calling, alerts, and music functions. - The Garmin Fenix 6 is a premium smartwatch with intense focus on monitoring many different sports. It has a battery life of 24 hours on GPS, and weeks while on standby. It has very accurate GPS location tracking, and supports sports like golf (with golf maps), and skiing (with mountain maps, and can even feature offline maps for off-the-grid exploration. Like premium smartwatches, it has blood oxygen sensors, but no ECG (there is still heartbeat monitoring). However, it comes at a significant cost of more than $750. - The Garmin Venu 2 is a more affordable Garmin option that has many basic functionalities compare to the Garmin Fenix 6. Like other affordable options, ECG is not on this model, but it does have a Blood oxygen sensor. It has a touchscreen, accurate gps tracking and tracks a lot of sports like the Fenix 6. - So how do we know what type of smartwatch may be the right one for you? Well from the different features, functionality, and style offered by each Smartwatch, it depends!
- The apple watches have seamless integration with IOS operating system found on all apple smart devices. Apple products works significantly better when pair together and is a very logical choice for iPhone users.
- Fitbit and Garmin have exceptionally better battery life compared to the other two companies offerings. the power management, and power usage of the devices, is better and lower. If you need to be disconnected from the world,these two companies have good offers for battery longevity.
- Although all four companies install accurate sensors. Garmin, the GPS company, excels at including very accurate GPS tracking, and mapping potential and supports multiple sports. These two companies also include fitness focused applications also known as widgets that record more data points than the other two. If you enjoy endurance sports, or extreme sports (Swimming, Skiing, Triathlon, Hiking), then these are the watches for you
- Samsung and Apple smartwatches are optimal for third party application support for other fitness applications such as strava, and google Maps. They are also the only two companies that release watches that support LTE, which allows users to stay connected without bringing their phone. They both support replying to text messages, emails, and phone calls on the watch itself. Apple has the app store, which is the biggest application market.
- If you are still unsure, you can delve deeper into smartwatches by search them up by name, following by the word review (“i.e. Apple watch SE review”). Check technology focused forums like techradar, wareable.com and Toms Guide. Youtube is another platform where comparison are made in a video format. First, make a list of your desired features This can range from battery life, LTE, fitness tracking, types of sensors, applications, music, widgets, and compatibility with your smartphone Then, set a budget Remember to factor in additional costs such as subscription services, acquiring a smart device, mobile data plans, different costs for different models of each device. Finally, compare the devices Compare Quality features, Sensors, ecosystem, applications, subscriptions, etc Most differences come from screen size, screen quality, build quality, features included, etc
