9 BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BLOCKCHAIN INDUSTRY | BLOCKSTARS.IOBlockStars.io
Want to go beyond Bitcoins? We outline what is needed for a successful blockchain industry in 9 simple building blocks.
We view each one as critical infrastructure to enable sustainable commercial businesses to operate on a blockchain.
The world is growing more decentralized, in large part due to the transformative power of the internet.
- While originally thought to be isolated to use cases such as email and news media, the internet laid the foundation for unprecedented, multi-billion dollar industries and innovations such as ecommerce, social media, the cloud, smartphones, and online gaming
- However, the internet also enabled activities like identity theft, unwarranted surveillance, and the monopolization of personal data
- Blockchains bring security and privacy to the decentralized, digital world potentially addressing many of these undesirable consequences of the internet
Blockchain technology carries a similar revolutionary potential to that of the internet, though be wary of the hype.
- By making certain data immutable and shared across a network, blockchains allow value to be digitized, exchanged, and recorded without the facilitation (and cost) of a trusted third party – something truly unprecedented
- This means that any industries not already disrupted by the internet whose services include data collection, curation, verification, and/or dissemination could now be disrupted, especially those that are currently centralized and monopolized (e.g., banking)
- This also means that services previously susceptible to malpractice once digitized (e.g., voting and music sharing) can now be safely and securely brought into the 21st century
- And finally, this means that the tedious activities associated with data silos and imperfect communication, like filling out a medical history form every time we visit a new doctor, can be things of the past. We can now make (and own) one record that's stored on an immutable, append-only blockchain, and anyone we select can reference our record anywhere at any time
- Despite this awesome potential, we are still very much in the early 90s of the blockchain adoption and development curves. Much work has yet to be done as the technology matures, and business cases are only beginning to be flushed out. The priority now is to learn and pursue low-risk pilots
This report explores the definition of blockchains, how they work, the current state, and next steps for putting distributed ledger technologies on the radar.

Web3 Security: The Blockchain is Your SIEMTal Be'ery
2021’s hottest new tech term, according to TechCrunch, was “definitely Web3”. Web3, as its name suggests, is considered by many as the future of the internet: decentralized, permissionless, and based on modern blockchain technology. While Web3 might have a bright future, it’s in the middle of growing pains: A number of Web3 apps were hacked in 2021, leading to theft of cryptoassets valued at hundreds of millions of US Dollars. In this talk we will present Web3 app technology, dissect new attack surfaces, and suggest new and exciting defense mechanisms.
First, we will dive into the technical details of Web3 applications, showing how Web3 technology opens new attack surfaces by moving app functionality onto the blockchain. We will then analyze these newly-exposed attack surfaces by reviewing a few examples we’ve discovered “in the wild.”
While Web3 exposes new attack surfaces, it also provides novel detection opportunities. Specifically, the public and transparent nature of the blockchain allows security researchers to immediately explore full details of any attack and, as a result, leads to quick and thorough discoveries. This is a paradigm shift in security research, as current practices only allow a few to learn actual attack details, only some portions of which are shared publicly. This shift in transparency allowed us to independently explore the aforementioned attacks.
Furthermore, we believe we can do even better and go beyond rapid post-mortem reports. We will show how the same raw data we had previously used for a post-mortem analysis can be analyzed in real-time (or even ante factum by “taking a peek” into the blocks that have yet to be mined) to detect and even prevent attacks. This capability is enabled by the online nature of the blockchain and its inherent block time delays. In fact, we can import, with relevant modifications, many of the principles and learnings of current web defenses, including Web Application Firewall (WAF) into the realm of blockchain. By doing so, we introduce a scheme for a Web3 Application Firewall (W3AF) which can greatly improve Web3 security and blockchain-based apps.

Building decentralized apps: Battle of the tech stacksBlockStars.io
A talk given at Bitcoin Meetup Berlage Meet & Workspace, Amsterdam, Netherlands, on June 18th, 2015, Aron van Ammers.
Like Bitcoin is "decentralized money", decentralized applications or ÐApps promise to enable "decentralized everything".
Developing those applications requires technology stacks to build on. A great amount of projects have taken on the task to build those stacks in part or in full, approaching the problems to be solved from different angles. These projects include Ethereum, the Eris platform, Counterparty, Colored Coins, Maidsafe, Codius, Tendermint and others.
In the the, Aron gave a broad overview of the technology landscape for decentralized applications as it stands today. He compared some prominent technology stacks and described some of the challenges and strategies with decentralized development.
I spent quite some time to digest how Blockchain works and how it can influence our everyday life in the upcoming decades. My slides focus on that from a non-IT expert point view.

For far too long Open Source projects have been getting in their own way; with no marketing budget to shout the loudest it’s always an uphill battle to get their fair share of the marketplace. But ultimately, we as Open Source project owners and maintainers are the problem.
We need to start thinking about Open Source projects as Products and Services that need to be promoted in their own right. It’s no longer good enough to just have a project website with a wiki and a download link. It’s up to us to sell our love for our creations and make others see the advantages of using them. We need to get out of our own way and show the world what Open Source can do for them and right now we’re failing. Join us to find out what you can do to get out of your own way and succeed.

210 - Software Population Pyramids: The Current and the Future of OSS Develop...ESEM 2014
Context: Since human power is an essential resource, the number of contributors in a software development community is one of the health indicators of an open source software (OSS) project. For maintaining and increasing the populations in software development communities, both attract- ing new contributors and retaining existing contributors are important. Goal: Our goal is understanding the current status of projects’ population, especially the different experienced contributors’ composition of the projects. Method: We propose software population pyramids, a graphical illustration of the distribution of various experience groups in a software development community. Results: From the study with OSS projects in GitHub, we found that the shapes of software population pyramids varies depending on the current status of OSS development communities. Conclusions: This paper present a software population pyramid of the distribution of various experience groups in a software community population. Our results can be considered as predictors of the near future of a project.
Restribute ~ Wealth re-distirbution by blockchain hardfork ~ Tomoaki Sato
After the DAO hardfork Ethereum has 2 networks, Ethereum and Ethereum classic.
By seeing the fact, Gini index can be decreased by blockchain hardfork.
Re-distribution can be good even for people who have wealth in some blockchain protocol, because it increases engagement, and bring more network value to the blockchain.
This is not only company /project level, also can be used for governmental level to do democratic re-distribution of wealth not by centralized authority.

Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.
