3. WHAT IS A
SMART
SPEAKER?
is a type of loudspeaker and voice
command device with an integrated
virtual assistant that offers interactive
actions and hands-free activation
with the help of one "hot word".
4. WHY SMART
SPEAKER?
Voice assistants are convenient and their
application will continue to expand and
become integrated into an increasing
number of domains in our daily lives, but
not in the omnipresent way that an AI
assistant implies. The future of voice is the
integration of artificial intelligence in plenty
of narrow settings and tasks instead of a
broad, general purpose AI assistant that
can fulfill anything and everything you can
think of.
7. IN 1773…
Christian Kratzenstein, a professor of physiology in Copenhagen
appeared to be thinking along the same lines. He created a
strange device that produced sounds similar to human vowels by
connecting resonance tubes to organ pipes. Wolfgang von
Kempelen in Vienna created a similar Acoustic-Mechanical
Speech Machine just over a decade later. In the early nineteenth
century, English inventor Charles Wheatstone improved on von
Kempelen's system by using leather resonators. Their
configuration could be changed or controlled by hand to produce
various speech-like sounds.
8. THEN IN 1881…
Alexander Graham Bell, his cousin Chichester Bell, and Charles
Sumner Tainter created a rotating cylinder with a wax coating and
a stylus that cut vertical grooves in response to incoming sound
pressure. The invention laid the groundwork for the first recording
machine, the “Dictaphone”, which was patented in 1907. The plan
was to eliminate the need for stenographers by using the machine
to record dictation of notes and letters for a secretary, which could
then be typed offline. The invention took off, with more and more
offices around the world employing a secretary with a clunky
earpiece, listening to and transcribing the recordings.
