SMART AND EFFICIENT AUTOMATIC SOLAR
STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

BACKGROUND
 For the 2022-23 year grant request, the Minister for
Municipal Administration KN Nehru announced that
more street lights would illuminate the poorly-lit
streets under the Nirbhaya scheme for the protection of
women.
 As per reports by the New Indian Express, an
additional 5,594 street lights and 85 high mast lights
will be installed at an estimated cost of 33.57 crores
₹
across Chennai.
 Currently, there are about 2,91,415 LED street lights in
the city maintained by the corporation's electricity
department.
PROBLEM
 The electrical energy consumption of street lighting constitutes
an important part of total energy consumption. Saving energy
in street lamps is therefore important for total energy savings.
 Poor lit streets are perceived as very dangerous for pedestrians
 Without any lighting pose is danger to women to walk for long
distance
 It may increase the risk of collisions motorised forms of
transport
SOLUTION
• Light poles are used to promote security in urban areas
and to increase the quality of life by artificially extending
the hours in which it is light so that activity can take place.
• Lightings also improve safety for drivers, riders, and
pedestrians.
