Smart Goal Presentation Ross Fessenden
TOPIC What - My goal is to fully rehabilitate my shoulder through physical therapy by the end of April in time to play summer baseball pain free. How – Through physical therapy and diligence in maintaining my rehab schedule aside from the twice-weekly sessions with my physical therapist. Personal Wellness – I am an active individual and enjoy doing anything requiring physical exertion. In order to do this I must physically be at 100%. When I am not getting my physical activity I notice a difference in my overall mood and behavior. Baseball is my favorite sport and being able to compete this summer would have a significant affect on my life on the whole. I have been through an injury rehabilitation in the past and realize potential obstacles to my recovery. I must maintain a reasonable pace, be persistent with designated exercises, and remain optimistic through the recovery. The worst mistake I could face would be to try to return to throwing too soon or throw too much
Influencing Factors Enabling – I have played sports for years and know overcoming an injury requires a tough mental approach and optimism for a successful recovery. Time will prove a factor as well because I will need to conduct my exercises while attending classes Monday-Wednesday and working Thursday-Saturday. Reinforcing – My biggest incentive to recover form my injury is that I will be able to play baseball this summer. This will have a significantly positive impact on my overall health. I will receive support from my parents, who know how much I enjoy playing sports, my physical therapist, and my friends. All of these people will encourage me to recover so I am able to enjoy doing something I love come summer.
Resources Family – I am extremely close with my family and rely heavily on them for support. They attend most of my games and have since I was a little tike playing tee-ball. They will push me to keep up in my rehab efforts. Cost – I am fortunate enough to have the cost of my extensive physical therapy paid for entirely by my health insurance. This makes participation easy for me and allows me to have the best resources available. Baseball Coach – My coach is encouraging me to take my time and be sure not to rush back just to play the first game. This is helpful considering he could negatively influence my recovery by urging me to rush back for the start of the season. Roxanne – I am fortunate to have a very positive physical therapist that has dealt with many sports related injuries and knows how to push athletes when it comes to physical therapy and keeping up with their exercises.
Success Near full range of motion, no pain throwing, not quite 100% Week 10 Big improvements. Throwing from distance, no pain. TIRING! Week 9 Continued throwing, addressed work issue. Slow progress. Week 8 Hit a plateau, little improvement. Work related, set-back. Week 7 Less pain, more range. Began throwing. More tiring than painful Week 6 Noticeable progress in range. Power lifting on my own. Week 5 Basketball. Showed stretch w/ a b-ball, it helped. Some pain. Week 4 Improved range across body, still pain. No throwing, but playing basketball pain free Week 3 Same pain, less tired from exercises. Slight weight increase. Week 2 Pain lifting arms over shoulders, low weight for exercises with high repetitions. No throwing yet. Week 1
Evaluation Meet Goal – Unfortunately I came up short. I am not throwing from a mound yet. I am throwing pain free but have a few weeks before I will be ready to pitch. Why Not? – I believe work contributed. I do a lot of work above the shoulders. This stresses my shoulder for long hours consecutively. I think if I had had more time to rest between exercising and work I would have had a faster recovery. Therapy – My therapy is complete and have received advice moving forward. My therapist has cleared me to play baseball since there is no pain in my baseball motions. She believes I should listen to my shoulder and only do what it is willing. In moving forward I will tread lightly and make sure I don’t jeopardize the future health of my shoulder by over-working it.
