Smart Cities: The Role of CNR. Learn more about CNR Smart City Project in collaboration with Smart Service Cooperation Lab.
One year after the presentation of CNR Smart Cities Project, new technologies and innovative solutions are still demonstrating that Smart Cities are more viable than ever. Our contribution in the MOBILITY area has been to implement a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for traffic and parking monitoring.

CNR SMART CITIES PROJECT
• The project «Renewable Energy and ICT for Sustainability» of CNR aims at testing
innovative solutions to make cities environmentally and energetically sustainable
• On 4 July 2013 a public selection of 3 Italian Municipalities was called
• The goal was to find municipalities that were ready to be transformed into «Smart Cities»,
through: digital advertising for citizens and tourists, automated management of city
parking slots, mobility and traffic monitoring, energy management and balance, public
lighting remote control and management…
• Winner Municipalities:
– Agordo -> Category: Municipality with less than 7.000 inhabitants
– Riccione -> Category: Municipality with a high touristic impact
– Siracusa -> Category: Historical center that has an “A” zone, according to D.M. 1444/1968
• In addition, CNR Smart Cities Test Plant extension to Municipality of Bologna

URBAN METABOLISM
THE PROJECT
Low cost monitoring of city areas using a distributed network of sensors,
SensorBoxes, measuring most important environmental parameters.
A SensorBox is a board, based on open-hardware Arduino platform, equipped
with low cost sensors that measure (adding a geolocation tag):
• Temperature/Humidity
• COx
• Ox
• VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
Goal: to have a general picture of city health and discover where anomalies are,
in order to plan a more in depth measure campaign with more precise sensors.
Result: time and cost savings

VIDEO ANALYSIS
Functions
• REAL TIME alarms, 24/7 availability of service, unmanned operations
• PREVENTION of anomalies, with proactive analysis
• CROSS-CORRELATION of events, with real time metadata
• REAL TIME data visualization on dedicated web front end
Compare of two technologies:
• on board video analysis (Bosch)
• video analysis hosted on dedicated server (IBM I.V.A.)

SMART CITIES TEST PLANT - CNR
• It is a test plant located inside the CNR Research Area of Bologna,
with the goal of developing and testing services and solutions
before application on the field
• It could be similar to a small area of a city, because it has public
lighting, roads, parking slots
• Officially open on 22 January 2013 by former General Director of
Italian Digital Agency - Mr. Agostino Ragosa
• It features:
– Multimedia display for digital signage
– IP cameras for surveillance, traffic and parking monitoring
– Wireless sensors for parking monitoring
– Wireless Radio Bridge @ 2,4 and 5 GHz
– Public lighting network with 84 remote controlled lamp posts (PLC
technology)
• CNR Smart Cities Test Plant is linked through Dark Fiber (F.O. G 652)
with Telecom Italia Data Center at Roveri Industrial Area (Bologna)
