Houston small group health insurance premiums fell 1.8 percent nationwide thus far in 2022, and that’s after a 1.7 percent decline in 2021 and 3.2 percent drop in 2020.

Group health insurance in
Houston continues to see its
premiums drop to all-time lows
thanks to the current
administration's push for
affordable healthcare for all.
According to an Urban Institute
Study funded by the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation,
Affordable Care Act premiums
fell for a third year in a row.

Though percentages varied
significantly from region to
region, the study said this
year's drop was a massive
1.8 percent.
These drops were largely
because of enrollment and
insurer competition surges
along with continued federal
aid, according to a recent
article by Politico.

Clearly, this impacted
individuals and families with
health insurance in Houston
who were previously uninsured
or underinsured.
Rick Thornton, a Houston health
insurance agent , said the latest
statistics are once again the result of
what the current administration has
been pushing for since President
Biden took office last year.

The continued drop in premiums
over three years is a sign of great
things to come and will likely spur
continued enrollment by those
who haven't jumped onboard yet,
Thornton added.

Both sides voiced their views on October 25 when the Senate Democratic Task Force on Health Insurance chaired by Sen. Martin M. Solomon held a public hearing in New York City. "State mandated benefits are a predictable strategy fora society whose fondness for public services far exceeds its willingness to pay for them," stated Jon R. Gabel, associate director of Policy Development and Research with the Washington, D.C.-based Health Insurance As sociation of America. "One appealing facet of employer-mandated benefits is that they seem ingly extend the protection of society’s safety net without raising taxes. “In reality, however, mandated benefits con stitute a tax on employer-sponsored health in surance — pricing out of the insurance market many of the most vulnerable members of the workforce.” COST WILL INCREASE “The cost for the mandate will continue to increase every year, adding to the financial burden on employers and employees. Costs will increase not only because of the spiraling increases in health care costs in general, but also because health insurance coverage will increase demand," argued Edward Reinfurt, vice president of the Business Council of New York State. "Small employers often cannot afford to self- insure. The only option for a small employer faced with spiraling increases in health care costs, exacerbated by mandated benefits, is to eliminate employee health insurance entirely,” warned Christopher Booth of Hinman, Straub. Pigors & Manning, legislative counsel for the New York State Conference of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans. Sitting in the middle is the state’s Insurance Department. Walker, Washington Correspondent, MedPageToday Published: October 12, 2010 WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments today in a case seeking to sue vaccine maker Wyeth outside the special forum established to assure continued availability of vaccines. Congress created the so-called "vaccine court" in 1986 to address safety claims in an attempt to ease the threat of lawsuits in state courts against pharmaceutical companies lest they pull out of what they claim is an unprofitable vaccine marketplace completely. The case under consideration was brought by the parents of Hannah Bruesewitz, now 18, and charges that she developed a seizure disorder after receiving her third dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine when she was six months old. She has suffered developmental problems ever since, and will likely require medical attention for the rest of her life, her parents say. The dose of the vaccine in question, TRI-IMMUNOL, came from a lot that generated 65 reports of adverse reactions, including 39 emergency room visits, six hospitalizations, and two deaths, according to documents from the U.S. appeals court that heard the case last year. The Bruesewitz suit argues that the vaccine had a flawed design, contained toxins that caused their daughter's seizures, and that Wyeth could have manufactured a safer vaccine but chose not to. The flawed-design concept, the family alleges, takes the case out of the jurisdiction of the vaccine court, which was set up to compensate injuries from unavoidable side effects. The vaccine court turned down the Bruesewitz claim and the family then sought to bring a case in state court.
