Small cells: Delivering densification for 5G (3GPP RAN 5G Workshop) Small Cell Forum
At a 3GPP 5G workshop in Phoenix, Small Cell Forum identified priorities that will be critical in shaping the roadmap for 5G networks. The Forum outlined the issues, options and requirements on which its members are working, and which could smooth the path to the introduction of 5G.
Case Study: Intel Corporation - The Benefits of, and Need for Agile Operation...CA Technologies
There are still challenges to the successful adoption of SDN/NFV, and how to manage this dynamic technology is one of them. Without proper assurance, there is a risk that these architectures will not scale, perform or deliver the benefits that SDN and NFV promises. In this session learn why Intel, one of the industry leaders helping to drive the network transformation, believes that solutions like CA's approach to SDN/NFV assurance will help remove these risks with proactive management and monitoring of both the virtual and physical network landscape, and can also help improve DevOps initiatives, IT agility and accelerate new service deployments. You will also hear about the Intel Network Builders program and other initiatives Intel is championing to help accelerate the adoption and deployment of SDN and NFV.

HETNET Strategies with Oi Brazil and Maravedis-Rethink Sept 2014Wi-Fi 360
Operators are moving towards hyper-dense networks made up of far smaller cells of coverage. However, many technologies will be used to fill those cells – self-contained mini-base stations, enhanced WiFi hotspots, DAS and distributed radio systems. Even Cloud-RAN will start to make an appearance, with operators often more willing to experiment with new virtualized architectures in their small cell layers. This webinar will examine the mixture of technologies which will go into the dense small cell network of 2015-2019, and the future impact of virtualization, based on Maravedis-Rethink’s most recent surveys of over 100 mobile and converged operators worldwide.
Some key trends which explored:
The need for hyper-dense networks in certain scenarios and the progress towards achieving them
Other areas of small cell growth such as verticals
The impact of virtualization on the small cell proposition
An overview of trends in the Americas
Look through the slides from the July 17th FierceWireless webinar with guests from Cisco, SDNCentral, and Openwave Mobility as they examine the place of SDN in facilitating next-generation application services.

Update on The Forum
Today’s announcement – urban small cells
Where next?
A little earlier in the year, SCF completed a major piece of work that addressed the deployment of small cells in an urban context. I’d like the share the background and context of this work and tell you how you can access it. I also want to tell you more about our release program and its roadmap for the next year to 18 months.
And this is my most important takeway – the url of our release site where you can download everything you need to know about deploying small cells in an urban context.
Small Cell Forum continues to attract new members – 25 in 2013, another 15 this year. What has been interesting is that the ecosystem has continued to expand – for example, we’ve seen more companies joining from the backhaul community, more companies focusing on deployment issues. All this reflects industry focus.
In rural and remote environments small cells can reduce deployment costs and provide platforms to enable rapid, simple customisation to fit the requirements of specialised user groups.
Their simple deployment model opens the way for new ecosystems that give cellular operators the opportunity to engage with rural and remote user groups and service partners at varying degrees to best fit their business ambitions for these areas.
UK regulator Ofcom recently noted that whilst overall levels of consumer satisfaction with mobile networks are high – only two thirds of those living in rural areas say they enjoy a good mobile service.
The Forum is addressing this in its next release, Release Five, which is themed around small cells for Rural & Remote deployments.
Blue sky thinking: Virtualization has moved to the forefront of our thinking in response to its growing role in operators’ planning in parts of their RAN.
Small cell rollout is entering denser and more complex HetNet scenarios. Small cells therefore need to fully interwork with other platforms that already offer virtualized RAN offerings if they are to remain a significant part of operator planning in the years to come.
Small cell ecosystem already aligned around MAC/PHY split – one of the alternative NGMN decompositions
Original FAPI/SCAPI requirements centered on a shared memory/DMA based decomposition between ecosystem partners
