This document discusses how technology has become integrated into our daily lives. It provides examples of how computers and mobile phones can be used for entertainment, communication, education, and more. The document also explores how technology is used in families and discusses debates around its benefits and disadvantages. Students are prompted to consider technologies they use, imagine new inventions, and analyze older technologies that have been replaced by modern devices. The goal is to have students think critically about technology's role in both simplifying and complicating modern life.

TV INDUSTRY REPORT gives the overall picture of advertising on TV during the period Jan’14 to Dec’15. It covers top advertisers, categories and brands and their % share in total advertising in terms of minutes along with comparison with 2014. The report also focuses on share of TV channels, share of each genre and ad-spend split over the time slots.
DATA SOURCE: MEDIA BANK PAKISTAN
BASE: Spot TVC’s
IMPORTANT: All the ranking are on the basis of minutes, which does not reflect the ranking on the basis of ad spend.
The always-connected world is becoming a reality faster than most of us would have expected. Now people are accessing information through a variety of devices based on where they are and what they’re doing. No longer is being connected limited to the constraints of the traditional desktop environment. Devices, networks and the Web are evolving at a fast rate. Our expectations about what we want, how we want it and when we want it are more complex. Designing for this multi-device environment to provide experiences that meet the expectations of the audiences is challenging.
This presentation from UX Australia 2011 covered how to approach designing experiences that span multiple platforms and devices to show how to break down the complexity inherent when developing across multi-device, multi-role and multi-context scenarios. It also covered the need to be pragmatic when defining solutions that address all of these issues in the increasingly fragmented environment we are part of, including integrating features and functionality of third-party platforms that you have no control over.
It provides examples from the wild to illustrate how what appears to be a simple and straightforward set of features and functionality on the surface, becomes inherently more complex when you take into account different access devices, different user roles and different development environments.
Resources for Lawyers to Help Create SpaceJack Pringle
The legal profession faces a bewildering array of challenges. And when new computer technologies, evolving client expectations, and competition force changes on the profession and the way we do business, some of the tools that have served us well in the past may fall a little short. As a result, managing change when the “new” becomes “the normal” can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, too many attorneys react to the distresses of the law practice by isolating themselves and turning to unhealthy and dangerous actions and habits.
These materials are a compendium of short pieces and resources that have helped me create some practical strategies for surviving- and hopefully thriving- in an uncertain world.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Technology and You
Before we start………….
We cannot imagine a world without cell phones, computers, the internet and the many things that
technology has made a part of our daily life. We live in a world where every day new information becomes
available to us. We can see how technology affects almost every part of our lives. There is an information
and technology explosion in our world and every one of us enjoys the benefits of it. life. This SLU, explores
how technology plays such a major part in our lives.
Activity – 1: Bring the world into your room
We can use a computer or cell phone with the internet for many purposes. When we use it to watch
movies, we feel as if we are in a theatre. When we play games, we enjoy ourselves as if we are on the
playground. We can now read stories on the net when earlier we could only find them in books and
magazines made of paper.
Can you come up with at least ten more uses of computers? Write them in the space below.
Here are some clues.

Which of the above functions do you like the most? Why ?
Which of the functions do you find surprising ?
How do computers, mobile phones and the internet help to differently-abled people ?
“The world is in my pocket. This little machine connects me with the world…” Can you write sentences
like these to describe a mobile phone ?

Activity – 2 Technology and your Family
Is there any family which doesn’t enjoy the benefits of technology or does not use gadgets of some kind ?
Can we explore the role of technology in your family ? Here are some questions which can help you to do
this.
• How many gadgets are used in your family ?
• Who uses them ?
• Which one is the oldest one and which one is the latest ?
• How many gadgets are used by everyone in the family? How many are used by individual members
only ?

Add some more questions. Look at your answers. Can you write a few paragraphs about the use of
technology in my family ?
Read out your description to your friends.
Activity – 3: Are Mobile Phones a Benefit or a Nuisance ?
A mobile phone has the power to kill you or save your life. Talk on the phone while you are driving, and
you are very likely to have an accident. But on the other hand, when there is an emergency, the mobile
phone can be helpful. Think about this and fill the table below. Don’t forget to compare your list with that
of your friend.
Benefits of a cell phone
Can get you the information you want.
Can connect you with lot of people
You can record what teacher says in the class

Disadvantages of a cell phone
Too much unwanted information. Distracts you
from your work.
Real friendship is far better than virtual friendship

You can include sleeplessness, waste of time, expensive, showing off, more entertainment than needed, etc.
What are the counter arguments for these ?
What does one have to do to get the best use of a mobile phone ?
How can one avoid all the negative aspects of a mobile phone? Does “switch off when you work” help ?
Please share your views with your friends. If some of them don't agree with your views, how will you
convince them that you are right, and make them feel that you have a valid point ?

Activity – 3: My Own Technology
We love inventions that solve real world problems. Remya Jose, a 14 year school girl from Kerala, has
created a simple pedal-powered washing machine which came about due to her dislike of washing clothes
by hand. Her invention is not only a washing machine, but can double up as an exercise machine as well.
This washing machine is actually quite simple - a modified bicycle frame attached to a square metal box that
contains an iron-mesh drum inside. The pedal is basically like an exercise cycling machine with an attached
metal box extension.
Think about a problem you have. Imagine a new machine that can help you solve it. Describe it in few
sentences. It may be crazy, but don’t worry about it. All ideas are crazy before they turn into products.
Read out your imaginary technology to your friends.
Here are some ideas to think about.
1. When somebody opens the gate to your house, a machine automatically pumps water into the
overhead tank !
2. Hold the mobile phone in your hand and move it to the left and right a few times. Does the phone
battery get charged ?
Can you think of any more ideas ?
7. STUDENT LEARNING UNIT 15
6
Imagine the smallest details of your product and explain them in your description. Give your invention an
attractive name!
Activity – 4: Technology around Us
Have you noticed people using small machines which they themselves have invented to solve their
problems ?
For example: machines to minimize water usage, to grind masala, etc.
If you find one ask how it is used. You can do the following to get some information about the product.
• Prepare a questionnaire
• Interview the person
• Take a few photographs of the machine and the inventor
• Use the data you collect to write a small article
• Read it out to your friends and ask for their suggestions to improve it.
• Rewrite it and add the photographs to your article
• Present it in the class. Allow the other students to read it in their free time.
Activity – 5: Technology that has been Disappeared
Can you identify these objects? These are a typewriter, a camera, a gramophone and a telegraph machine,
respectively. But they have now been disappeared from our lives. Instead small, compact gadgets have
taken their place. Can you find out which gadgets have replaced these old machines ?
8. STUDENT LEARNING UNIT 15
7
Can you name some old technologies that have disappeared ?
What are the new gadgets that are used in their place ? Fill in the table below.
Disappeared technologies
Typewriter
Big camera
Gramaphone

Think about areas like transport, entertainment, health care, communication, etc. List out the technologies
that were used earlier. Then try to answer the following questions. You could discuss some of these
questions with your friends.
• How have these fields changed ?
• Are there any people who still use the older instruments ?
• How did the coming of computers into offices affect typists ?
• 'Old technologies were good because they did not harm the environment. But new technologies
are very complex and they are harmful both to the environment and to people.' How far is this
statement true ?
• 'Change is a must and will continue.' Is another statement we usually hear. What are your views ?
Activity – 6: Technology that is used in daily life
How has technology contributed to making our lives easier? Find out the various gadgets that people use
and fill in the table below.

In the end, a small note to you:
We have now come to the end of the final SLU. With this you have completed 15 SLUs. Do tell us if you
have found them interesting. Do you now feel more confident about understanding English? Do you feel
that you can speak, read and write better ?
What about the topics? Were the topics interesting or would you have liked us to add other topics? Do
let us know which ones you liked the most. Also tell us which areas you want to know more about.
And the activities in the SLUs ? Were they exciting ? Doable ? Too difficult to do ? Boring ? Which ones
should we drop ? Which ones should we keep? Give us any suggestions and feedback on how we can
improve the SLUs.
