“There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the
religion. The right course has become clear from the
wrong. So whoever disbelieves in ‘Taghut’ and
believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy
handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing
and Knowing.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 256)
The Arabic ’Taghut’ is variously interpreted to refer to idols, a
specific tyrant, an oracle, devil or an opponent of the Prophet

the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into
light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the
evil ones (Taghut): from light they will lead them
forth into the depths of darkness. They will be
companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 257)

“It is He (ALLAH) who confers blessing upon you, and His angels
[ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses

“Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death]
while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say,
"In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We
were oppressed in the land." The angels will say,
"Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for
you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is
Hell - and evil it is as a destination.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 97)

migrates seeking to gain worldly benefits or for the sake of
marrying a woman, then his migration is for that which
he has intended.”

“Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and
approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring
pleasure. [They will be] abiding therein forever. Indeed, Allah
has with Him a great reward.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 21-22)

brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you
have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and
dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved
to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His
cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And
Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 24)

“CONSIDER the flight of time! Verily, man is bound to
lose himself (in state of LOSS) unless he be of those
who attain to faith (AAMANU), and do good works
(‘AMAL-AS-SWO-LIHAT), and enjoin upon one another
the keeping to truth (TAU-WA-SWI –BIL-HAQQ), and
enjoin upon one another patience in adversity (TAU-
WA-SWI –BIS-SWOBR’).”
(Qur’an: ‘Asr: 103: 1-3)
Allah SWT here swears by “Allah SWT here swears by “WAL-’ASRWAL-’ASR” – mostly understood by scholars” – mostly understood by scholars
ofof TafsirTafsir as meaning “as meaning “TimeTime” itself; or it alludes to Himself as (” itself; or it alludes to Himself as (ROBB-AL-ROBB-AL-
DAHRDAHR) t) the Lord of Time”; or the “Decline late afternoon period of ‘he Lord of Time”; or the “Decline late afternoon period of ‘ASRASR”.”.
Essentially, Allah SWT is referring to something very significant andEssentially, Allah SWT is referring to something very significant and
profound which we human, who has been given the reasoning facultiesprofound which we human, who has been given the reasoning faculties
and cognitive ability, must think and reflect upon. Unlike animals, weand cognitive ability, must think and reflect upon. Unlike animals, we
are aware of time.are aware of time.
Consider, how time is relatively perceived as slowly or swiftly it ‘flies’.Consider, how time is relatively perceived as slowly or swiftly it ‘flies’.
And yet with this notion, we too know that our time here on earth isAnd yet with this notion, we too know that our time here on earth is
limited and each of us has a term (limited and each of us has a term (life in this worldlife in this world) predetermined.) predetermined.

So, time is actually an ‘So, time is actually an ‘assetasset’ which constantly is diminishing with every’ which constantly is diminishing with every

Therefore indeed we are all losers with time.Therefore indeed we are all losers with time.
Yet, why are we given time (life on earth)? Surely, our ‘Yet, why are we given time (life on earth)? Surely, our ‘assetasset’ must have’ must have
a meaningful purpose – i.e.it can either be utilize for good or be wasted.a meaningful purpose – i.e.it can either be utilize for good or be wasted.
Also if we are granted an asset, we must be responsible and beAlso if we are granted an asset, we must be responsible and be
prepared to face the liability. Thus Allah SWT, as theprepared to face the liability. Thus Allah SWT, as the Lord of TimeLord of Time

Allah SWT has communicated to mankind through revelations by way ofAllah SWT has communicated to mankind through revelations by way of
many Prophets and Messengers, the Last of whom is our Prophetmany Prophets and Messengers, the Last of whom is our Prophet
MuhammadMuhammad .
When asked “What is IIMAN?” he , enumerated six things:
[1] Believe in Allah;
[2] Believe in His angels;
[3] Believe in His Revealed Books;
[4] Believe in His Messengers and Prophets;
[5] Believe in Judgment Day and Life in the Hereafter;
[6] Believe in the Decree and Foreknowledge of Allah.

YetYet IIMANIIMAN alone is insufficient. The second requirement is to do goodalone is insufficient. The second requirement is to do good
works, termed as ‘works, termed as ‘A-MILUS-A-MILUS-SWSWO-LIO-LIHHAATAAT ..
What constitute ‘good’ works or ‘righteousness’ has been specified inWhat constitute ‘good’ works or ‘righteousness’ has been specified in
ISLAMISLAM (submission or surrender to the guidance of Allah’s way) termed(submission or surrender to the guidance of Allah’s way) termed
asas SHARI’AHSHARI’AH. And it must be. And it must be done with sincere intentiondone with sincere intention to serve orto serve or
worship Allah SWT – the concept termed asworship Allah SWT – the concept termed as AL-IAL-IHHSANSAN..
To nurture every Muslims to submit, we are given the 5 Pillars asTo nurture every Muslims to submit, we are given the 5 Pillars as
personal obligation being [1]personal obligation being [1] ShahadatainShahadatain; [2]; [2] SwolahSwolah [3][3] ZakahZakah [4][4]

And with theAnd with the SHARI’AHSHARI’AH, every aspect of our life has been provided with, every aspect of our life has been provided with

Interestingly in this Surah, merely havingInterestingly in this Surah, merely having IIMANIIMAN (Faith) and striving(Faith) and striving
with ‘with ‘AMILUS-SWOLIAMILUS-SWOLIHHAATAAT (doing good works or righteousness), is still(doing good works or righteousness), is still
insufficient. Allah stipulated 2 more aspects that must be fulfilled:insufficient. Allah stipulated 2 more aspects that must be fulfilled:
[1][1] enjoin the keeping to truth (TAUWA-SWI –BIL-HAQQ),
[2] enjoin patience in adversity (TAUWA-SWI –BIS-SWOBR’).
These 2 aspects underscore an important aspect of human life, as social
being who are in need of each other in educating one other towards
truth and our responsibility towards each other to strive and persevere
patiently in facing trials and tribulations of life.
Amazingly in just only 3 verses of this “Surah Al-’Asr”, Allah SWT provide
adequately in a nutshell, the principles of this DEEN-UL-ISLAM.
