This document discusses distillation and fractional distillation processes. Distillation separates mixtures where one component is volatile and the other is not, such as removing salts from drinking water. Fractional distillation separates components with small boiling point differences, like the hydrocarbons in crude oil, by condensing fractions of different boiling points. The key difference between distillation and fractional distillation is that distillation separates components with large boiling point differences, while fractional distillation is used for components with small boiling point differences.

This process is used in separating
mixture where one component is
volatile other is not.
E.g.: Ordinary drinking water contains
many salts dissolved in it. These salts
are removed by distillation

8. CHARACTERISTIC OF DISTILLATION
This method is possible only when there is a
substantial difference between the boiling
points of the two components.
Eg : Acetone and water mixture

9. FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION
Fractional distillation method is possible
only when there is a small difference
between the boiling points of the
components. They can also be separated on
the basis of the increasing order of their
boiling points.

10. Crude oil is a mixture of liquiid hydrocarbons
which have only small difference in their
boiling point.
