than children who skipped the naps, according to a
study published in Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.

Importance
Insufficient sleep in young children may slow
language development. A study of more
than 1,000 twins found that insufficient
sleep during the first two years of life was
associated with language delays in children
to the age of 5.

Safety
Regulations
Each infant/toddler shall
be allowed to follow
his/her own sleep pattern
Infants shall be placed on
their back for sleeping,
unless contraindicated by a
physician.
Cots, cribs and bedding
A crib must be provided for each child up to 18 months of age.
No crib shall be used by more than one child at a time.
Each crib must be of sturdy construction with bars closely spaced
to prevent injury.
Each crib must be equipped with a waterproof, firm, snug fitting
mattress.
No child shall be placed directly on a waterproof crib mattress or
crib mattress cover.
Restraining devices of any type must not be used in cribs
Crib sides must be up while the child is in the crib.
Pillows are prohibited in cribs.
No double or multi-decked cribs may be used.
Cots and/or mats and cribs used by any infant or toddler must
be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.
Sheets must be washed before being used by another child.
There must be at least one designated wheeled evacuation
crib.

The facility must provide supervision to
children during napping and/or sleeping
hours and at all other times by awake staff.
