HTS - Is there any future for VSAT service providers?Newtec
With the introduction of the first Ka-band High Throughput Satellites (HTS) in the US and Europe now a few years ago, it becomes clear that VSAT service providers who were traditionally providing services in those regions are now heavily struggling in order to survive this major industry transformation and threat.
HTS - today a threat for many VSAT service providers
So why is it that such a promising technology is now threatening the existence of those VSAT service providers?
HTS inherently provide the promise of much lower transmission costs and much higher transmission capacity. The answer lies in the fact that the value chain has changed profoundly in the US and Europe. Were previously VSAT service providers were able to create and differentiate their own services, they are now facing major HTS network service providers that became heavy competition. VSAT service providers were used to buy their satellite capacity and VSAT equipment from satellite operators and VSAT technology vendors, but with the introduction of the first HTS networks the world changed.
Due to the inherent network design of those initial HTS networks using geographically spread gateways, VSAT service providers can’t use their teleport infrastructure any longer, can’t lease space segment on those HTS networks and are therefore facing a competitor they can’t win from.
HTS – VSAT technology vendors have transformed into fierce competitors
The irony of this all is that those VSAT technology vendors as HNS and Viasat, who initially were the key vendors to those VSAT service providers, have now evolved into VSAT service providers and more recently into satellite operators themselves!
They have dramatically changed the whole value chain and are now threatening on one side the existence of the VSAT service providers, their previous customers, and on the other side they are putting satellite operators under pressure, their previous suppliers, as they are launching their own satellites.
This is the presentation as given during the VSAT2013 Informa/Comsys event in Amsterdam of September 2013.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

benefit from the new features outlined below.
2. New
Support of HTS Spot Beams &
Cross-Strap-Transponders
High Throughput Satellites take advantage of frequency reuse
and multiple spot beams to increase throughput and reduce
the cost per bit delivered. The picture below shows the multi-
ple spots of the Intelsat Epic over Africa and the colours indi-
cate the frequency reuse.
Intelsat Epic spots with 4 coloured frequency reuse
With the higher number of spot beams the regional coverage
of a single spot beam gets smaller and ground terminals are
such often located in different beams. In the legacy widebeam
spots every signal sent up is processed and sent down in the
same region visible to all ground terminals. This is typically
not the case when using the new spot beam architecture, as
every downlink adds extra cost for the network operator. So
the question of interconnecting ground terminals economi-
cally arises.
SKYWAN 5G HTS software adds the capability to operate with
HTS satellites, like the Intelsat Epic, without the loopback re-
quirement for the remote terminals. The software is based
on the field proven Cross-Strap-Transponder technology of
the SKYWAN 7000 series with extensions and interconnects
up to 4 beams. The technology can either be used with HTS
satellites or for out-of-area missions with Cross-Strap-Tran-
sponders.
16 MF-TDMA Channels
The number of TDMA channels increases from 8 to 16 chan-
nels. This doubles the managed bandwidth in the network
to 320MBit/s. It delivers also greater design flexibility having
more inbound channels for remote terminals with smaller
dishes.
Shared Amplifier mode
The Shared Amplifier mode avoids the back-off requirement
at sites operated with multiple transmitters using the same
amplifier. Depending on the configured mode, traffic is routed
through a single unit or all transmitters are scheduled in se-
quence to prevent parallel transmission. Thus the BUC power
class requirement is kept small saving CAPEX.
Node Redundancy: 1+1 and N+M
Redundancy is the duplication of critical system components
or functions for increasing system reliability and availability
in the case of component failure. Components (N) have at
least one independent backup component (+1) or more than
one (+M) for systems managing many services where a single
backup node might not offer sufficient redundancy.
The SKYWAN 5G 1+1 and N+M redundancy operates in
hot standby mode to maximize availability of a network
node. All relevant parameters are mirrored to the back-
up unit and it automatically takes over if the main unit
has a malfunction. Exchanging a broken unit does not
need a reboot of an active unit keeping service time up.

Network Node with 1+1 Redundancy
In a network node with stacked units, the backup unit is ag-

up unit to the network and license management.

All information in this guide has been prepared with great care. ND SATCOM, however, does not accept liability for possible
errors, changes and/or omissions. This technical application guide is for information purposes only and aims to support you
in tackling the complexity and taking full advantage of all potential the technology has to offer. Please note that this guide is
based on own measurements, tests, specific parameters and assumptions. Individual applications may not be covered and
need different handling. Please check www.ndsatcom.com or contact your sales partner for further information.
AES / Encryption API
The Encryption Application Programming Interface defines a
low-level Ethernet interface between SKYWAN 5G and an ex-
ternal crypto device. The API is agnostic to the implemented
crypto algorithm and key handling of the external device. 3rd
party crypto devices can use the API to implement custom-
ized trusted links over satellite. ND SATCOM offers an SDK for
customers to implement their own solution.
In future ND SATCOM will offer its own HW module perform-
ing AES Encryption. This HW module will utilize one of the
internal expansion slots and is upgradable in the field.
Multicast
IPv4 Multicast is forwarded either through the TDMA or the
DVB link based on centralized configuration in the NMS Mul-
ticast service. The operator defines the multicast groups,
the forwarding path (i.e. the DVB Gateway or Hub Router or
SKYWAN 5G) and selects the involved receivers from a device
list. Data forwarding is controlled through IGMP multicast
group registration protocol saving bandwidth if no receiver
is registered.
Boot Time
The SKYWAN 5G boot time is reduced to 200 seconds to im-
prove user experience in mobile applications and to respond
faster after power loss.
Bit Error Rate Test mode
All bits and pieces to run a Bit Error Rate Test on SKYWAN5G
are combined now in a wizard for intuitive handling and a bet-
ter user experience. Presented on a single page in the Web-
UI, all relevant parameters can be adjusted and the result
monitored simultaneously.
DVB-S2X roll-off factors
The SKYWAN 5G NMS DVB service supports now all specified
DVB-S2X roll-off factors (α = 0.35, 0.25, 0.20, 0.15, 0.10, 0.05)
and automatically configures the DVB-Gateway and the DVB
receivers accordingly.
DVB-S2 Receiver Throughput
The user data throughput forwarded by the DVB-S2 receiver
to the attached LAN raised to 80 MBit/s for unicast and 60
MBit/s for multicast traffic.
DVB Hub Router
ND SATCOM validated the Cisco 4000 series Integrated Servic-
es Router as part of the DVB-S2 solution. It delivers consistent
performance even while multiple services run concurrently.
The hub router is responsible for outbound traffic analysis
and path selection (TDMA or DVB). It performs policy based
routing based on administrative rules and dynamic routing
based on remote receiver availability.
Jumbo Frames up to 1600 Bytes
Ethernet traffic moves in units called frames. The maximum
size of frames is the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) and
the limit is set in the IEEE 802.3 standard to 1500 Bytes. An
Ethernet packet larger than 1500 Bytes is called a Jumbo
Frame. SKYWAN 5G supports Jumbo Frames up to 1600 Bytes.
IP Precedence, Class Selector Support
The Type of Service (ToS) field used for priority marking of
IP packets has had various purposes and definitions over the
years. All started with a three-bit IP Precedence and a 5 bit
ToS field. The modern redefinition of the ToS field is a six-bit
Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) field and a two-bit
Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) field. SKYWAN 5G QoS
is based on DSCP.
SKYWAN 5G supports legacy applications still using IP Prece-
dence based on configuration and remapping the Class Selec-
tor to DSCP. The Type of Service field can be passed transpar-
ently (remapping after transfer) as well.
