Skakespeare and his style of writing
Shakespeare's plays are a product of the Elizabethan theatrical context in which they were first
performed. A lot of pressure was put on Shakespeare as he wrote his plays because he was not
allowed to upset the royal family. His style would have been different than others in those times and
a lot more thought has gone into his writing than people listening would think. Usually, the audience
take for granted the cleverness and thought of Shakespeare's writing, however, now we have studied
and gone into great detail about Shakespeare's writing, we can appreciate it more than they did:
The Globe Theatre was where Shakespeare had most of his plays performed. It had many
decorations to make it look appealing and to try and to make it seem ... Show more content on

For example, they say "Bernado," and "Holla Barnado" and "Say – what, is Horatio there?" He also
cunningly tells us the people in the play are: "And liegeman to the Dane", "the rivals of my watch"
and "Friends to the ground". This tells us that Horatio and Marcellus are the "good guys" and it also
tells us their role in the play – the watch.
Also, Shakespeare sets the scene. Dialogue has to compensate for the lack of real night time. He
does this by using dialogue like: "Tis now struck twelve" and " Who's there?" "Stand and unfold
yourself", and "Give you good night." He also tells us what the night is like, "Tis bitter cold," and
"Not a mouse stirring." This all tells us that the night is cold, quiet, just gone twelve and nothing
much is happening, without the use of real darkness.
Shakespeare also uses hidden stage directions for the actors' sake, for instance, Barnado says "Get
thee to bed Francisco" which is really telling the actor to leave the stage. Shakespeare also says
"Barnado hath my place. Give you good night" which tells the other actors that he will be leaving
the stage. This also tells the audience that Barnado is taking over his place from then on. Barnado
also says, "Sit down a while" then Horatio says "Well, sit we down" which means that they should
sit down.
Furthermore, Shakespeare will use the actors as narrators. They would tell the audience what is
happening, but at the same time they would be playing their part in the play. For

The Renaissance And Elizabethan Era
The Renaissance and Elizabethan era were vital times in the rebirth of the lost art form of Greek and
Roman times: Acting/Playwriting. During the Elizabethan era, playhouses formed to fill the void.
There was four main theaters during that time, but one shined brighter than the rest. That one was
known as the Globe theater. As many others were built, the Globe Theater was built on the south
bank of the River Thames. It was erected around 1599 and was created for Lord Chamberlin's men,
who bought and owned the theater until they moved it across the river. With the creation of this
theater, a golden era was about to dawn. Although it was not the first of its kind, the Globe Theater
is the most influential theater in England, as it became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second point has to be implied, but since it says that it goes out into a circular pit, so it could be
taken as use of a circular stage. The shape of the stage is unclear, but that is why the Globe Theater
will always be a world renowned theater. Second of all, it could be noted that Shakespeare is the
greatest playwright of all time. Shakespeare is likely responsible for the creation of over three dozen
plays, in which most are world renowned. Most plays were written and performed at the Globe
Theater;, "Shakespeare was one of the most popular playwrights of this time and often if you were
going to go see a play performed it was most likely written by him" (Thomas). The Globe Theater
was a breeding ground, for the most part, his own work. The Theater was built for The
"Chamberlain's Men, and since Shakespeare was a part of it, it was common knowledge that his
plays were being performed. Though his stardom went far beyond just being performed at the Globe
Theater. His plays were powerful in that they expanded the horizons of the English right on the cusp
of colonization, "Shakespeare's mind roamed free: into the temples of lost civilisations and onto
dusty ancient battlefields; up to the ramparts of Danish castles and Scottish hill forts; across swaths
of the eastern Mediterranean and down through the Levant into Turkey and Egypt. He had a
fascination with Italy, especially the glittering cosmopolitan city of Venice (setting for two plays,

Many different sounds drift from the doors of the Globe Theatre. Passionate love songs, clashing
battles, and heartfelt speeches all have their places in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Although most
remember him for his writings, Shakespeare himself worked as an actor at the Globe. The theatre
has survived much, still bringing us Shakespeare's brilliance today. While the theatre itself has
changed, many of the plays performed there remain identical to Shakespeare's originals. And it can
still be visited and much can be learned from the history and literature found within its walls.

After visiting London in 1949, Sam Wanamaker decided to begin the project of rebuilding the Globe

Today the Globe Theatre provides plays of many sorts, and even lectures and talks about various

How To Enter The Globe Theatre
As a sweeper in London, I am proud to say that I've finally been able to enter the Globe Theater to
see "Romeo and Juliet." Though the area around the theater has prostitutes and murders, that did not
stop from the play being amazing. I had saved four pennies in a few weeks in order to watch the
play. Usually as a sweeper, you would pay one penny and stand and watch the actors preform, but I
was in fact able to sit with higher classes in society. When you first walk into the theater, an usher
demands you to either put one or four pennies into a "money box", a locked box with a tiny slit in
the middle. After, you are greeted with snacks such as oranges and meat pies. This wide selection
could treat anyone, young or old. The concession stand

Social Responsibility In Greek Theatre
Throughout the different eras of theatre, the Greek, Roman, Medieval, Commedia, and
Shakespearean performers all contributed to the culture of the societies of they were in. However,
the level of "social responsibility" that was prevalent in these eras was dependent on whether or not
government promoted theatre as a means of enlightening the general public. As a result, the manner
in which theatre was presented contributed to the evolution of the particular society either positively
or negatively. During the era of Greek theatre, which lasted from 550 B.C. to 220 B.C., government,
art, education, science, and medicine were all viewed as equally important. Akropolis, which was
the center of government and thought, espoused the ideals of empowerment and making one's self
and society better. Plays that were performed made people ask questions in order to push society
forward, and the government created theatre in this era so that it can be critiqued. The Festival of
Dionysus, which was a weeks–long festival, featured various artists from different fields showcasing
their talents, including theatre performances that ran all day. At the same time, love–making and
drinking was encouraged (Dionysus is the god of wine and fertility) as a means of opening up one's
state of mind. At the performances of these plays, actors wore masks, which indicated the type of
character they were, and the masks had attachments so that people could hear what they were
saying, but there was also a

II. Structure of the Globe
The theater that Cuthbert Burbage built for the Chamberlain's Men had a total capacity of between
2,000 and 3,000 spectators. Because there was no lighting, all performances at the Globe were
conducted, weather permitting, during the day (probably most often in the mid–afternoon span
between 2 P.M. and 5 P.M.). Because most of the Globe and all of its stage was open air, acoustics
were poor and the actors were compelled by circumstances to shout their lines, stress their
enunciation, and engage in exaggerated theatrical gestures. What would seem most striking to a
modern (Broadway) theatergoer about the productions staged at the Globe is that they were
completely devoid of background scenery. Although costumes ... Show more content on

Although condemned by London authorities, along with cock–fighting, bear–baiting and the bawdy
attractions of taverns, the Southwark theater district operated outside the legal reach of the City's
officials. But while the Globe Theatre, and indeed, the entire Elizabethan theater scene opened its
doors to the low life of the pits, it also accommodated an audience of higher–status, well–heeled,
and better educated individuals. As Harry Levin notes in his general introduction to the Riverside
Shakespeare (1974), the "Globe was truly a microcosm or little world of man". With its
logo of Hercules holding up the earth (as a temporary replacement to Atlas), the Globe Theatre
constituted a "little world" in which the social elite rubbed up against a cross–section of
common vulgarians, drunken idlers, and other shady, street–wise sorts. Yet, at the same time, the
Globe was grand even in the eyes of Elizabethan society's most powerful and prosperous leaders. As
Levin also observes in his prefatory essay, recently discovered documents indicate that
reconstructions of the Globe as "a quaint little Tudor cottage" have been errant, since
Burbage's house "may have had arches, pilaster, and other details of Baroque
architecture". Contemporaneous accounts suggests that the Globe was far more impressive
than the thatched and half–timbered models of it can capture, having a more spectacular look to its
structure than is commonly recognized, one

Behind the Scenes: The Globe Theatre
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, opened in 1599, is well known as the home of Shakespeare's greatest
works and performances. Shakespeare's troupe, Lord Chamberlain's Men, built the first Globe
Theatre from the lumber of another theater that was torn down. Before the construction of the
theater, the owners of the original theater offered Shakespeare and four other members of his troupe
an opportunity to be part owners of the new Globe Theatre, and they were quick to accept. After the
opening the Globe became a hub for entertainment. Some of Shakespeare's works performed at The

Theater and theatrical performances are as old as time and thanks to Shakespeare, there are
incredible pieces for performers and audiences alike to enjoy for the next several thousand years.
The circular design of the theater created a bond between the actors on the stage and the audience.
The Globe brought together people of all castes and unified them through theater. As long as
someone had a penny to spare, they could see a show at The Globe, allowing everyone the unique
theatrical experience The Globe provided. The Globe still offers performances and camps for youth
to learn about theater in the place where Shakespeare entertained. This fact alone is a testament to
the importance of The Globe and Shakespeare's works. With the efforts of Shakespeare, his troupe,
and other actors and writers of his time theater has grown into a unifying form of entertainment for
all people (possibly even across The Globe). The Globe will forever serve as the home that raised
theatrical performances into the extravagant, sometimes life changing, experiences they have

Significance Of The Globe Theatre
Elizabethan drama remains some of the most appreciated and world–renowned to ever exist. Despite
its early foundation in the mid–16th century to early 17th century, plays from William Shakespeare,
Ben Jonson and Christopher Marlowe, almost five hundred years later are regularly produced and
performed to a modern audience. 'No dramatist, living or dead, has been more frequently reprinted
or performed, or translated into a greater variety of languages...Shakespeare in performance is now
reaching larger audiences than ever before in history'. (S.Schoenbaum, 1979) One of the main
reasons for the longevity of Elizabethan theatrical success was the construction of 'The Globe
Theatre' in 1599. With the construction of The Globe came notable improvements in special effects,
costumes, makeup and the size of audiences attending the performances.

The simplistic architecture throughout The Globe and its productions can be recognised as another
example of its lasting influence as this tradition remains within modern performances in the 1997
Globe and its own construction. Theatrical innovation was quite creative with regards to special
effects and sound. These were managed by using fireworks, drums, and even firing canons
throughout the dramas. 'When Shakespeare wrote plays, all the action took place on a small stage
with little more than a painted wall to suggest the setting. If a scene called for thunder, stagehands
pounded a drum or rippled sheet metal. If a scene required a ghost or a god, stagehands lowered him
on a winch line or sent him up through a trap door. A character wounded in a sword fight clapped a
hand to his chest, bursting a pouch beneath his shirt to release blood–or a facsimile thereof'.

Macbeth
William Shakespeare is known to be one of the greatest playwrights of all time due to his complex
writing abilities and advanced storytelling. Shakespeare was known to be born on April 23rd 1564 in
Stratford–upon–Avon in the United Kingdom. Shakespeare was a member of Lord Chamberlain's
men and over the course of approximately 20 years, wrote about 37 plays.
During the early stages of William's life, there are almost no records of his education and family life.
We do know that by 1592, Shakespeare began his life in the theatre as an actor and playwright. As
time progressed, his plays became more and more popular and were held at a high caliber in terms
of his writing style. Historians have had doubts that William Shakespeare was never just one person,
but just a pen name for a group of actors who wrote the plays. But in an article named Anonymous
Shakespeare? The author states that Shakespeare often collaborated with other playwrights such as
Fletcher and Middleton.
Shakespeare started his writing career by writing historical plays such as Henry V and Richard II.
After this, he moved onto romantic plays such as Romeo and Juliet and comedies like A Midsummer
Nights Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. His later works that concluded his career included
tragedies such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and The Tempest.
He is said to have died on his birth date in 1616 but scholars have believed this to be a myth and say

being sexist if not referring to the opposite sex. Originally, magazines were separated by gender, a
lady's magazine would contain something like home–style tips, fashion, poetry, and lady products
while the men's magazine would contain politics, worldwide news, and men's fashion. In today's
magazines, both men and women are included within magazines. Even if society continued to
develop magazines meant for the two different genders there will never be equality. Ultimately, if
taking one side of the sexism spectrum only results in being called a sexist than the only solution is,

A Brief Biography of William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare, the man of many artistic talents, is still quite a mysterious figure in today's
world, mainly because of the lack of records on this man; but also because of his writings.
According to what little the Holy Trinity Church had documented on William Shakespeare, the legal
and business transactions including some theatrical and Court documents as well as his life's work,
can be used to put the little bits of information given to us to see the basic overview of this man's
life, use it to see the Globe Theater where he worked as a playwright and an actor, as well as what
the Elizabethan Era that he lived in was like.
Elizabethan England Era, or the Golden Age in England, started in 1558 when Queen Elizabeth
succeeded her Catholic sister Mary I and re–established the Protestant Anglican Church. During this
Era William Shakespeare was born in Stratford–upon–Avon on April 23, 1564 to a John
Shakespeare, a glover and leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a landed local heiress. Three days
later, on April 26, 1564 William Shakespeare was baptized in the Holy Trinity Church. William
Shakespeare was the third oldest out of the eight children born into the Shakespeare's family. In the
1570's during the excommunication of Queen Elizabeth 1 from the Catholic Church, Shakespeare's
fathers lost most of his money.
With the loss of their fortune, Shakespeare's father's job as a Stratford official would have been able

Queen Elizabeth I and the Elizabethan Theater. Although life was not easy during the Elizabethan
era it was one of the most progressive times in history and marked the beginning of the Elizabethan
theatre which still to this day influences theatre and the way theatre is presented .
The Elizabethan Era began in 1588 and ended in 1603 during Queen Elizabeth I reign England 's

Majority of the Elizabethan population were very poor roughly 3 percent of the population consisted
of wealthy nobles. Nobles were the elite men and women of society much like the upper class in
today's society. Elizabethan Women were obedient to men and dependent on their male relatives to
support them and since there were no school for women they were tutored at home and weren't
allowed to enter university. Women also couldn't be heirs to their fathers titles, vote , join the
military ,or become doctors and lawyers .Along with all this woman had to preserve there virginity
until marriage or they would be looked down upon or belittled however if they were raped they were
punished instead of the rapist because during this time men could do whatever they desired to do in
life.
The Elizabethan Era is known for the intricate outfits that men and women wore to court and elite
social functions. The wealthy wore furs and jewels, and the cloth of their garments featured
extravagant embroidery. The poor and even the middle classes dressed less extravagant and instead
more simply. Elizabethan theatres such as the globe theatre were popular amongst the rich and the

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
The Globe Theater, an entertainment outlet for all people of that time, provided a place for
Shakespeare's plays to be performed. It was the third and most famous playhouse in London. When
it was built, it was one of the most important playhouses in London. The Globe's architecture was
intriguing for its time and its life was long and prosperous.
The Globe was built by two brothers, Cuthbert and Richard Burbage. They had inherited the Globe's
predecessor, The Theatre, from their father, James Burbage (Williams 365). Fearing their lease
would run out, the brothers dismantled it and carried the materials to Bankside, where the Swan and

Until 1600, no more than two companies had been licensed at any one time to perform daily within
the reach of London. Half the shares were kept by the Burbages, the rest going to the Chamberlain's
Men which Shakespeare was a member (Britanica). Each of the sixteen shareholders of the globe
made about 25 pounds (Williams 365). When James came to the throne in 1603, he favored the
Globe, bringing it success (Andrews 167). "One night before a planned revolt, The Chamberlain's
company was asked to perform Richard II in order to instill mutinous thoughts in the audience."
(Westerhof)
The admission to the Globe was one shilling to the boxes. Lee stated that the general admission was
one penny, and a stool on the stage was sixpence. Posters, or bills, were placed throughout London
on rails and posts. John Northbrooke said in 1579, "They used to set up their bills upon posts some
certain days before to admonish people to make resort to their theatres." The Globe was thought to
have gotten its name from the sign representing Hercules or Atlas carrying the globe with the motto,
"All the World's a Stage." (Williams 365)
In 1613, the Globe burnt down accidentally during a performance of Henry VIII (Miller–Schutz 21).
It was set on fire by a cannon set off to mark the King's entrance onstage in a scene at Cardinal
Woshey's Palace. The entire theatre was destroyed in one hour (Britanica). It was rebuilt

It could have had an emphasis on social class and identity. Religious reasons could also play a major
role in deciding styles for clothing. Generally men of this period wore heavily puffed clothing of a
silk or thick cotton material. These also had the benefits of warming one up in a cold winter day.
Layers were used in outfits to create a puffing image. The outfit would usually be completed with a
fur, leather, or velvet hat. Because of Spain's growing empire, the influence from this region brought
over a variety clothing styles. It seems that generally people back then all wore thick layers even in
hot weather. Outfits were very structured and rigid, possibly due to preserving a straight back for
great posture and manners. Many accessories were added to increase one's image and social stature.
Usually, outfits included a black color. This is the first time that black is introduced into clothing.
Black clothes would have the effect of making one seem sleeker in figure and it would complement
many different colors of inside layers or accessories. Black has the great effect of highlighting
colors on top of the mono color surface. People back then could have worn this color to show off
their power by emphasizing the silver or gold jewelry. In this period of time, slimmer shoe designs
were introduced for men. They would occasionally have ribbon decor on them in a puffing format.
This made walking or doing daily activities easier because the shoes were more comfortable.
Codpieces also became popular in men's fashion of this time. In women's fashion, dresses were
more popular. Like in many older civilizations, very rigid and structures dresses were used. These
were basically cases for humans to help them keep a good posture and figure. The insides of the
dresses would be lined with wire to restrict the woman's figure and squish and mold the body into a
certain hourglass shape. The torso would be

The Black Death:
In the 1330s, China was struck with a devastating disease: the bubonic plague. Because it was a
great trading nation, many European ships came in and out of its trading ports, and these trade ships
eventually brought the disease to Europe in the 14th century, where it would leave a devastating trail
of death. The plague first arrived in Sicily through trade ships from Genoa, and by the time the ship
was docking, many sailors aboard were already dying of the bubonic plague. Thus began the spread
of the deadly disease, later known as the Black Death, throughout Europe. The bubonic plague is a
disease caused by Yersinia pestis, a strain of bacteria that normally ... Show more content on

It first faced difficulty getting built, for the first landlord had a severe dislike towards plays. Then, it
had competition with surrounding theatres, which plagiarized works to attract audiences, but luckily,
the theatre had its set of unique special effects that attracted audiences. The playhouse was then later
burned down and rebuilt, only for Puritans to demolish the theatre in the end. Prior to this research
of the Globe Theatre, I only knew of it as a famous and popular stage theatre that William
Shakespeare helped fund to build, but I had not recognized nor known of the difficulties it had
throughout its existence. Despite all the troubles that the playhouse faced, the theatre eventually
made itself known as the grandest and most loved theatre in the Elizabethan era, and its innovative
ideas have helped shape modern special effects and live theatre action. To me, the Globe Theatre
was a successful business that had succeeded in capturing its customers despite competition and
impediments, and it was able to outshine other playhouses to gain audiences because it had its own
set of unique special effects that made it a prominent theatre. Each time it was closed or taken town,
the theatre would be rebuilt again, and audiences would flock through the entrance once more, all
the way until its final closure. Knowledge of the theatre has taught me that despite the many
obstacles and conflicts in the way of one's goal, one can succeed so long as they persist, just like
how the playhouse continued to stand and eventually made its name as "the" theatre of its

Globe Theatre Vs American Theatre Essay
1.0. Introduction
Whether it be buildings, marketplaces, transport, religious or political edifices the debate as to
whether history changes are ongoing. Often people believe that history is always changing, but is
that the case? The study of history can be perceived as "constantly evolving, never–ending journey
of discovery" (Ponic, 2011). A comparison between Shakespeare's original Globe Theatre and
Sydney Opera House provides a good example of this. Both Amphitheatres were used similarly and
both in different time periods. The following report will critically analyse the impact history has had
on today's society by comparing two buildings that were and are used for similar activities.
2.0. Theatres
Theatres are generally described as a building, part of a building, or outdoor area for housing
dramatic presentations, stage entertainers, or motion–picture shows (Dictonary.com, 2017).
Throughout time theatres have been used for different things. For example, the historical Globe was
primarily used for plays whereas the Sydney Opera House while used for plays, also hosts musical
productions, opera and symphony concerts. One simply goes to theatre to watch a performance, a
form of entertainment.

"The Globe Theater's" beautiful building design and interesting former times have been a very
notable element of our past, it had even held many of Shakespeare's famous plays. "The whole
world is a playhouse" and one of the most important playhouses in the world would have to be "The
Globe Theater". It is nearly impossible to think of our world without "The Globe Theater" and all
the interesting occurrences that have happened involving it. This theater could have been nothing
more than a building if it were for all the important history that was incorporated into it making it be
such an important piece of history. Between 1597 and 1599, "The Globe Theater" was built and it

The Globe Theatre : The Importance And Influence Of The...
The motto and saying of the Globe theatre is "Totus Mundus Agit Histrionem", which meant "The
Whole World is a Playhouse." Perhaps this means, since it is called the "Globe" Theatre, that the
plays here can be shared throughout the whole world, "and from its circular shape" (Gurr), from
which it was built. The Globe Theatre was one the most best places to watch a play in the
Elizabethan era, because the plays had an important lesson to teach that still has an affect and
emotion on society today when these stories are told to other people. So that brings the question:
what is the Globe Theatre, and why is it such a great historical landmark? The Globe Theatre had
many important characteristics that made it famous, such as how it began, where it was built, the
structure, many different features, and how it contributed to the Elizabethan Era. The Origin of the
Globe Theatre all started with Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain's men. The Lord
Chamberlain's men were a group of actors that worked for Shakespeare, acted, and participated in
plays that Shakespeare wrote. "Christopher Marlowe, who inspired Shakespeare, was born in the
same year as him but was active in theatres before he was." (Hartnoll 72–90) From the inspiration,
"Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain's men both paid into building the Globe Theatre" (Gurr)
and was "built in 1599 by Cuthbert Burbage." (Mabillard) This theatre was in Southwark, London,
just like the Rose and Swan Theatres. The structure of the Theatre was very important back in the
Elizabethan era as well. Some key parts that were included into the building and design of the Globe
Theatre included that "the timber that was used to build the Globe Theatre was the same timber that
was used to build the original theatre." (Evans) The original theatre was built by Richard Burbage's
father, James Burbage in 1576, therefore, when the Globe theatre was built, the timber was 23 years
old! Another key part of the design of the Globe Theatre is that it was built similar to the Coliseum,
but in a smaller scale. The Coliseum in Rome had a circular shape just like the Globe Theatre, the
reason the Globe theatre was built to this sort of design is that Classic Greek and Roman
architecture was

How Does Prospero Change Throughout The Tempest
"By my so potent art. But this rough magic I here abjure,"(V.i. ). Throughout Shakespeare's play The
Tempest, the main character Prospero refers to his magic, and it is through his magical abilities that
the story is set in motion. In the play, Prospero controls characters and events, much like a
playwright does. Shakespeare created Prospero as a guise for himself, through similarities in
personality, manipulation abilities, and environment, to demonstrate and reflect on his literary
abilities before bidding farewell to the theater.
Shakespeare could have created Prospero by incorporating elements of his personality and life into
Prospero. Shakespeare came from a good family, his mother was the heiress to a land and his father
was a bailiff in Stratford. Since his father was a town official education was free, and Shakespeare
was sent to a good quality grammar school. There, he learned to read, write, and speak Latin.
(William Shakespeare). Shakespeare "would have studied 10 hours a day, six days a week, mostly
Latin by rote. That was the international language of the professions, and vital to master if you
wanted to climb up in the world" (10 TEN THING YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT Shakespeare).
Although Shakespeare did not attend a secondary school or college, he learned the essentials, that in
combination with his creativity, worked to form his famous literary pieces. Prospero is the former,

Dr. John Adams Globe Play House Analysis
Dr. John C. Adams drew 15 scale models of the Globe playhouse, as the original might have looked.
Dr. Adams wrote many books about the Globe, but his most famous was The Globe Playhouse. The
Harvard University Press published it in 1942, and it is now widely recognized as "the most
complete and integrated statement that Shakespearean scholarship has yet produced" (Irwin Smith).
His main purpose of drawing these blueprints was to put his conclusions into a three–dimensional
form by creating a scale model. He finished it in early 1950. Anyone who has adequate knowledge
about the Globe can interpret his drawings, but a teenager or young adult who may not be familiar
with The Globe would most likely be able to visualize what Adams had planned for

Representation Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew By William...
Written in the late 16th century during the Elizabethan era, the Taming of the Shrew is a play by
William Shakespeare. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious "shrew", daughter to
father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to
methods intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively "tame" her, by Petruchio, a
bachelor on the prowl for wealthy women.
Having been performed throughout the centuries to create a historical assortment of varied
adaptations, versions of Taming of the Shrew have changed in accordance with time periods and
related shifting social expectations and culture. Discussed by literary academia extensively, a
particular manifestation reflecting such changes among this cohort of portrayals is the representation
of women. Notably, a clear trend about the societal attitudes at the time of presentation of versions
can be assumed by examining and comparing the depiction of women in two adaptations; the Globe
Theatre's directed by Toby Frow in 2012, a production expressing social norms from the Elizabethan
era, and the BBC's ShakespeaRE–told TV episode directed by David Richards (BBC Retold), set in
modern times. The representation of women in these plays allow it to be concluded that the social
expectations of women have progressed from domestically and professionally limiting to more
supportive and liberal over time, with a specific focus on gender equality. In spite of this,

Why was Elizabethan theatre so successful? Essay
Why was Elizabethan theatre so successful? One of the reasons that Elizabethan theatre was so
successful was that it was enjoyed by the Queen. Elizabeth never visited the theatre herself, but was
known to have invited companies of actors to perform for her at court, as is shown by this extract
from government records in 1572: "To the Lord Chamberlain's players at Whitehall, 25 February
1572, for a play presented by them before Her Majesty on St Stephen's Day." She was a very
important patron of the theatre, even allowing one company to call themselves "The Queen's men".

An attraction to the theatre was its cheap entry cost, for groundlings it only cost 1 penny, this meant
that it was accessible to even the poorest Elizabethans. The theatre cost different amounts depending
of where you wanted to be, the yard where everyone all stood together cost 1 penny, to sit cost 2
pennies and for a wealthy person to sit comfortably in a place where they could be seen by most of
the people in the theatre cost only 3 pennies. The cheapness of this attracted people of all classes,
the poor to see the wealthy and to have a cheapish day out, and the wealthy to show themselves and
their riches off in front of everyone at the theatre. The theatre was very successful because it held
attractions for a wide variety of people. To the rich it offered a chance to show off their wealth and
to make contacts. If you were a young, single man, going to the theatre dressed in your finest clothes
could attract the attention of a young woman to you, and to criminals the theatre was an easy place
to pick pockets and steal other desirable items from people in the crowd. To all the chance to buy
fruit, nuts, wine and beer was also an attractive proposition. Another attraction to the theatre was the
actors, these men had difficult jobs, they had to learn their lines and queues in the evening, rehearse
the play in the morning and then perform it in the afternoon, before going home to learn their lines
to a new play. The actors had to

was when the theater caught on fire in 1613. The fire happened during a performance of a play
called All is True. During the performance canons were shot which was the cause of the fire
(Shakespeare Globe Theater). The Globe Theater burnt down in less than two hours but was rebuilt
in 1614. And the third closure of the Globe was when the Puritans tried to shut it down. Some
people were Puritans and protested against the theaters. "The first Globe Theatre was built due to the
refusal of a puritan called Giles Allen to renew the lease of the 'Theatre'. The Puritans gained
additional power and support during the early 1600's." In 1644, the Globe Theater was demolished
by the Puritans and then tenement houses were built on the land of the theater. The theater was never

William Shakespeare 's The Globe Theatre
During the Elizabethan Era, The Globe Theatre was a very influential upcoming piece of
architecture that even Shakespeare first had his plays performed in. Although it was very difficult to
keep the building standing for long, it inspired many new theatre styles and still lives on today in
England. The Globe Theatre was extremely influential during the Elizabethan Era because of its
long history, unique architecture, and new ways of acting to go along with the new theatre style.
Although the majority of Shakespeare's plays were first produced in the original Globe Theatre, his
plays used to be performed in other forms of amphitheaters, such as halls, inns or open arenas
(Cummings). Shakespeare belonged to a company called Chamberlain's Men. They acted and before
The Globe Theatre even existed, they would perform in The Theatre, originally built and owned by
James Burbage (Cummings). The Burbage family consisted of James, the father and owner of The
Theatre, and Cuthbert Burbage, who was not actor but admired theatre (Cummings). The other son
of James Burbage was Robert Burbage, an actor in the Chamberlain's Men acting company and star
of most Shakespearian plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet (Cummings). In 1597,
the land that The Theatre was built on had a lease that was almost up, and Giles Allen, the owner of
the land, wished to tear the building down (Pressley). Because of this dispute, The Globe Theatre
came into existence. While working very fast,

Katherine's Speech In Taming Of The Shrew
The ambiguity of whether Katherine's final speech is authentic, in which she apparently proclaims
and promulgates female submissiveness, has been thought to define the tone of versions of Taming
of the Shrew. However, the attitudes evoked by the monologue can also indicate values of society at
the times which the play is presented. Generally, four main theories have emerged regarding the true
intent behind Katherine's speech (Wikipedia, 2017):
It is sincere and Katherine has been successfully "tamed".
It is sincere, but because Katherine has fallen in love with Petruchio.
It is ironic and is deceiving Petruchio by "parroting a socially acceptable, totally impersonal
catalogue of honours a wife owes her husband" (De Wachter, 2016).
It is neither, following the farcical disposition of the play–within–a–play framing device.
Up until the 20th century, most of the last speeches by Katherine have adhered with the first option,
including the traditional Globe Theatre adaptation. Katherine's acting in the Globe Theatre
production, grounded in her facial expressions and tone of voice, shows sincerity and truthfulness in
her declaration (V.ii). On the basis of this portrayal, it could be said that in a historical Elizabethan
context, audiences would have accepted and deemed the domestication mechanisms and taming
practises employed by Petruchio as normal. In contrast, "in a modern Western society holding
relatively egalitarian views on gender", interpretations of Katherine's address

The History of the Globe Theatre Today we know of The Globe Theatre on because of the famous
playwright and director known as William Shakespeare. The events which took place in The Globe's
past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of
theater and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at
its time, and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future.
In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to
lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be
allowed to build his theatre known as "The Theatre". It was located north of the London Wall
(Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there
were many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those
involved in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and
Cuthbert Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to
protect their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had
hoped he would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598
while Giles Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers,

Shakespeare : The Bard Of Shakespeare, Real?
Shakespeare, Real? Also known as, the Bard of Stratford–Upon–Avon, William Shakespeare is
widely regarded and the most prolific poet and writer of all time. Having amassed a portfolio that
includes a great many works, his work being some of the most critically acclaimed work of all time.
Yet, what we know about Shakespeare the man, is meager compared to our understanding of his
works. This gap in knowledge has contributed to the questioning of the authenticity of Shakespeare
as a real person. While there are some unexplained inconsistencies in the historical record of
William Shakespeare's life, evidence supports that he was, in fact, the author and playwright who
wrote thirty–eight plays and one hundred and fifty–four sonnets. Born four hundred and fifty–three
years ago, in Stratford–Upon–Avon, the exact day of Shakespeare's birthday is unknown, but is
widely recognized as April 26, 1564. Many births in those days were home births with no recording
or official records made. However, church records were more diligent, so his assumed date of birth
is related to his baptismal date. Shakespeare attended Stratford Grammar School until roughly the
age of fourteen, by all records, that is when Shakespeare's formal education ended. Between the ages
of fourteen and eighteen there is a gap in what historians know about Shakespeare's life. By age
eighteen Shakespeare had met and married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children;

The Octogonal Structure Roared from Shakespeare's Performers
This octogonal structure roared from Shakespeare's performers. The actors and the audience
throughout the performances had tears, laughter, and many left in complete awe. Every seat in this
three story theatre was packed tightly with over 30,000 eyes watching. Flags rose, and trumpets
started to play in the Globe while productions began. The Globe Theatre started an era of acting in
the late 1500's and changed the way we look at performing still to this day.
This theatre was jaw dropping as people entered this "salvaged wood" framed theatre. In 1599, the
stage was ready for acts to begin. The name of the Globe Theatre was for people to know that the
"whole round world" could be represented by every actor. William Shakespeare referred to the
theatre as " this wooden 'O' " (Langly). In Elizabethan times, the ground along the bankside could
flood by the Thames, so the Globe had to have solid foundations. After about 1600, as many as
15,000 people went to the city's playhouse every week.
The Globe was designed and was a "hodgepodge" of architectural structures. This framework held
the first performances. All actors were men. It did not matter whether the role was a woman or man.
The theatre was also one of the only social sites that brought together different classes of people. Of
this three story masterpiece there were special sections reserved for members of nobility.

his brother Antonio usurped the dukedom from him. However, Prospero gave him the opportunity to
do so because he was immersed in his studies. Prospero spent his time in the library learning and
studying instead of watching over the kingdom of Milan. Both Shakespeare and Prospero were
bright, however, Prospero was more educated and had more access to resources than Shakespeare

Shakespeare as a playwright is able to manipulate the characters within his works and in

directing and seeing his works come to life on the stage. As Rollert argues in "Shakespeare and The

theatre was. Finally the 3rd Globe theatre was built in 1996 and opened in 1997. This Globe Theatre
was built approximately 225 yards from the original Globe Theatre. The 3rd Globe Theatre is still

Now you would think that the First and Last Globe theatre would be totally different but really that

What Is The Significance Of The Globe Theatre
The Globe Theatre is an open–air playhouse which is considered one of the most famous theatres in
the world. Many of Shakespeare's plays were written so that they could be performed in the theatre,
and he was a part of the company that constructed and owned it. The theatre was built during a time
whereby there was an entertainment vacuum in London, and was thus hugely popular amongst the
masses for the variety of plays that graced its stage. Unfortunately, it was shut down and demolished
in less than a hundred years but it remains as one of theatrical history's most significant icons.
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was originally an Elizabethan theatre that was built in 1599 in London,
and it was named as such due to the fact that Shakespeare wrote multiple plays which were staged
there. It was one of the major theatres in the area it was built in (Southwark) along with the Rose

flags which advertised new plays were flown here.
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was truly the most magnificent theatre that was built in its time, and a

William Shakespeare's Mandate
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford–upon–Avon, a flourishing town in central England with
a population of two–thousand at the time. He was born to Mary Arden, a local heiress, and John
Shakespeare, a leather merchant and town bailiff, who both had been long–time residents of the
town. While the exact date of his birth is unknown, it is estimated that Shakespeare's birthdate is or
was around the 23rd of April, 1564, because of a record of his baptization three days later; children
were baptized as early as possible during this time, around three days after their birth. He had eight
siblings: five younger brothers and sisters, named Gilbert, Richard, Edmund, Joan, and Ann, and
three others that died during their births. From an early age, Shakespeare was given an intense
education in comparison to other children during his time. His parents never received any education,
and because of this they strived to give their children excellent educations. Shakespeare attended
Stratford–upon–Avon's grammar school, the King's New School, which he received free attendance

He first began writing comedies such as The Taming of the Shrew and , which garnered early
success and popularity for him, so much so that rival playwrights began furiously criticizing
Shakespeare in jealousy. In 1592, Robert Greene wrote on his deathbed that Shakespeare was "an
upstart crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his tiger's heart wrapped in a player's hide,
supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blank verse as the best of you." Ironically, the records
of these criticisms are the only evidence that we have of Shakespeare's popularity in the early

The Globe Theatre Research Paper
The Globe Theatre became what it is today because of its history. What was its history exactly?
Unfortunately, those are two questions many people don't have an answer to. So, what is the history?
The history of The Globe Theatre comes from a building known as The Theatre. The Theatre, had
been built by James Burbage, in Shoreditch (District in the East End of London) in 1576. The
Burbage's had a 20–year lease of the land where the theater had been built. When the lease was up,
the landlord intended on knocking the theater down. However, with the lease ending, James Burbage
built the theatre in Blackfriars as a replacement. Unfortunately the wealthy people of Blackfriars
persuaded the government to forbid its use for plays. James Burbage died in 1597. The members of
the Lord Chamberlain's Men had to rent a theater. In 1598, they decided to build a theater of their
own. The Burbage's sons got their fathers inheritance, Cuthbert and Richard, which were connected
the Blackfriars, they formed an agreement with Shakespeare and a few other actors, who became
partners for the new Globe. Each member had their own share, the two brothers, Cuthbert and
Richard, got a bigger share than the others. Each person's shares became smaller as ... Show more

In 1608, when the company could finally commit to James Burbage's plan, the members chose to
use both theaters, using the Globe in the summer and the roofed Blackfriars in the winter. If they had
wanted to, they could have rented a theater to someone else, since there was a shortage of theaters in
London during this time. They were also given another choice to change to the Blackfriars for good
in 1613, when the Globe burned down to the ground, its roofing had accidentally got set on fire by a
cannon during a performance of Henry VIII. However, with the importance and the sentimental
value of the theater the members decided to rebuild the Globe better than it had been

Shakespeare's Writing Style at the Globe Theatre

  • 1. Skakespeare and his style of writing Shakespeare's plays are a product of the Elizabethan theatrical context in which they were first performed. A lot of pressure was put on Shakespeare as he wrote his plays because he was not allowed to upset the royal family. His style would have been different than others in those times and a lot more thought has gone into his writing than people listening would think. Usually, the audience take for granted the cleverness and thought of Shakespeare's writing, however, now we have studied and gone into great detail about Shakespeare's writing, we can appreciate it more than they did: The Globe Theatre was where Shakespeare had most of his plays performed. It had many decorations to make it look appealing and to try and to make it seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, they say "Bernado," and "Holla Barnado" and "Say – what, is Horatio there?" He also cunningly tells us the people in the play are: "And liegeman to the Dane", "the rivals of my watch" and "Friends to the ground". This tells us that Horatio and Marcellus are the "good guys" and it also tells us their role in the play – the watch. Also, Shakespeare sets the scene. Dialogue has to compensate for the lack of real night time. He does this by using dialogue like: "Tis now struck twelve" and " Who's there?" "Stand and unfold yourself", and "Give you good night." He also tells us what the night is like, "Tis bitter cold," and "Not a mouse stirring." This all tells us that the night is cold, quiet, just gone twelve and nothing much is happening, without the use of real darkness. Shakespeare also uses hidden stage directions for the actors' sake, for instance, Barnado says "Get thee to bed Francisco" which is really telling the actor to leave the stage. Shakespeare also says "Barnado hath my place. Give you good night" which tells the other actors that he will be leaving the stage. This also tells the audience that Barnado is taking over his place from then on. Barnado also says, "Sit down a while" then Horatio says "Well, sit we down" which means that they should sit down. Furthermore, Shakespeare will use the actors as narrators. They would tell the audience what is happening, but at the same time they would be playing their part in the play. For ... • 3. The Renaissance And Elizabethan Era The Renaissance and Elizabethan era were vital times in the rebirth of the lost art form of Greek and Roman times: Acting/Playwriting. During the Elizabethan era, playhouses formed to fill the void. There was four main theaters during that time, but one shined brighter than the rest. That one was known as the Globe theater. As many others were built, the Globe Theater was built on the south bank of the River Thames. It was erected around 1599 and was created for Lord Chamberlin's men, who bought and owned the theater until they moved it across the river. With the creation of this theater, a golden era was about to dawn. Although it was not the first of its kind, the Globe Theater is the most influential theater in England, as it became ... The shape of the stage is unclear, but that is why the Globe Theater will always be a world renowned theater. Second of all, it could be noted that Shakespeare is the greatest playwright of all time. Shakespeare is likely responsible for the creation of over three dozen plays, in which most are world renowned. Most plays were written and performed at the Globe Theater;, "Shakespeare was one of the most popular playwrights of this time and often if you were going to go see a play performed it was most likely written by him" (Thomas). The Globe Theater was a breeding ground, for the most part, his own work. The Theater was built for The "Chamberlain's Men, and since Shakespeare was a part of it, it was common knowledge that his plays were being performed. Though his stardom went far beyond just being performed at the Globe Theater. His plays were powerful in that they expanded the horizons of the English right on the cusp of colonization, "Shakespeare's mind roamed free: into the temples of lost civilisations and onto dusty ancient battlefields; up to the ramparts of Danish castles and Scottish hill forts; across swaths of the eastern Mediterranean and down through the Levant into Turkey and Egypt. • 5. Globe Theatre Research Paper Many different sounds drift from the doors of the Globe Theatre. Passionate love songs, clashing battles, and heartfelt speeches all have their places in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Although most remember him for his writings, Shakespeare himself worked as an actor at the Globe. The theatre has survived much, still bringing us Shakespeare's brilliance today. While the theatre itself has changed, many of the plays performed there remain identical to Shakespeare's originals. And it can still be visited and much can be learned from the history and literature found within its walls. Sam died December 18, 1993, 4 years before the Queen opened the theatre for the first time. Though the area around the theater has prostitutes and murders, that did not stop from the play being amazing. I had saved four pennies in a few weeks in order to watch the play. Usually as a sweeper, you would pay one penny and stand and watch the actors preform, but I was in fact able to sit with higher classes in society. When you first walk into the theater, an usher demands you to either put one or four pennies into a "money box", a locked box with a tiny slit in the middle. • 9. Social Responsibility In Greek Theatre Throughout the different eras of theatre, the Greek, Roman, Medieval, Commedia, and Shakespearean performers all contributed to the culture of the societies of they were in. However, the level of "social responsibility" that was prevalent in these eras was dependent on whether or not government promoted theatre as a means of enlightening the general public. As a result, the manner in which theatre was presented contributed to the evolution of the particular society either positively or negatively. During the era of Greek theatre, which lasted from 550 B.C. to 220 B.C., government, art, education, science, and medicine were all viewed as equally important. Akropolis, which was the center of government and thought, espoused the ideals of empowerment and making one's self and society better. Plays that were performed made people ask questions in order to push society forward, and the government created theatre in this era so that it can be critiqued. The Festival of Dionysus, which was a weeks–long festival, featured various artists from different fields showcasing their talents, including theatre performances that ran all day. At the same time, love–making and drinking was encouraged (Dionysus is the god of wine and fertility) as a means of opening up one's state of mind. At the performances of these plays, actors wore masks, which indicated the type of character they were, and the masks had attachments so that people could hear what they were saying, but there was also a ... • 11. Essay about Globe Theater II. Structure of the Globe The theater that Cuthbert Burbage built for the Chamberlain's Men had a total capacity of between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators. Because there was no lighting, all performances at the Globe were conducted, weather permitting, during the day (probably most often in the mid–afternoon span between 2 P.M. and 5 P.M.). Because most of the Globe and all of its stage was open air, acoustics were poor and the actors were compelled by circumstances to shout their lines, stress their enunciation, and engage in exaggerated theatrical gestures. What would seem most striking to a modern (Broadway) theatergoer about the productions staged at the Globe is that they were completely devoid of background scenery. Although costumes ... Although condemned by London authorities, along with cock–fighting, bear–baiting and the bawdy attractions of taverns, the Southwark theater district operated outside the legal reach of the City's officials. But while the Globe Theatre, and indeed, the entire Elizabethan theater scene opened its doors to the low life of the pits, it also accommodated an audience of higher–status, well–heeled, and better educated individuals. As Harry Levin notes in his general introduction to the Riverside Shakespeare (1974), the "Globe was truly a microcosm or little world of man". With its logo of Hercules holding up the earth (as a temporary replacement to Atlas), the Globe Theatre constituted a "little world" in which the social elite rubbed up against a cross–section of common vulgarians, drunken idlers, and other shady, street–wise sorts. Yet, at the same time, the Globe was grand even in the eyes of Elizabethan society's most powerful and prosperous leaders. As Levin also observes in his prefatory essay, recently discovered documents indicate that reconstructions of the Globe as "a quaint little Tudor cottage" have been errant, since Burbage's house "may have had arches, pilaster, and other details of Baroque architecture". Contemporaneous accounts suggests that the Globe was far more impressive than the thatched and half–timbered models of it can capture, having a more spectacular look to its structure than is commonly recognized, one ... Stanbro Oskaloosa Senior High School Composition I/II Behind the Scenes: The Globe Theatre Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, opened in 1599, is well known as the home of Shakespeare's greatest works and performances. Shakespeare's troupe, Lord Chamberlain's Men, built the first Globe Theatre from the lumber of another theater that was torn down. Before the construction of the theater, the owners of the original theater offered Shakespeare and four other members of his troupe an opportunity to be part owners of the new Globe Theatre, and they were quick to accept. After the opening the Globe became a hub for entertainment. Some of Shakespeare's works performed at The Globe include Julius Caesar (1599), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theater and theatrical performances are as old as time and thanks to Shakespeare, there are incredible pieces for performers and audiences alike to enjoy for the next several thousand years. The circular design of the theater created a bond between the actors on the stage and the audience. The Globe brought together people of all castes and unified them through theater. As long as someone had a penny to spare, they could see a show at The Globe, allowing everyone the unique theatrical experience The Globe provided. The Globe still offers performances and camps for youth to learn about theater in the place where Shakespeare entertained. This fact alone is a testament to the importance of The Globe and Shakespeare's works. With the efforts of Shakespeare, his troupe, and other actors and writers of his time theater has grown into a unifying form of entertainment for all people (possibly even across The Globe). The Globe will forever serve as the home that raised theatrical performances into the extravagant, sometimes life changing, experiences they have become and will always continue to ... • 15. Significance Of The Globe Theatre Elizabethan drama remains some of the most appreciated and world–renowned to ever exist. Despite its early foundation in the mid–16th century to early 17th century, plays from William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Christopher Marlowe, almost five hundred years later are regularly produced and performed to a modern audience. 'No dramatist, living or dead, has been more frequently reprinted or performed, or translated into a greater variety of languages...Shakespeare in performance is now reaching larger audiences than ever before in history'. (S.Schoenbaum, 1979) One of the main reasons for the longevity of Elizabethan theatrical success was the construction of 'The Globe Theatre' in 1599. The simplistic architecture throughout The Globe and its productions can be recognised as another example of its lasting influence as this tradition remains within modern performances in the 1997 Globe and its own construction. Theatrical innovation was quite creative with regards to special effects and sound. These were managed by using fireworks, drums, and even firing canons throughout the dramas. 'When Shakespeare wrote plays, all the action took place on a small stage with little more than a painted wall to suggest the setting. If a scene called for thunder, stagehands pounded a drum or rippled sheet metal. If a scene required a ghost or a god, stagehands lowered him on a winch line or sent him up through a trap door. The author states that Shakespeare often collaborated with other playwrights such as Fletcher and Middleton. Shakespeare started his writing career by writing historical plays such as Henry V and Richard II. After this, he moved onto romantic plays such as Romeo and Juliet and comedies like A Midsummer Nights Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. His later works that concluded his career included tragedies such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and The Tempest. A Brief Biography of William Shakespeare William Shakespeare, the man of many artistic talents, is still quite a mysterious figure in today's world, mainly because of the lack of records on this man; but also because of his writings. William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Essay Shakespeare's Globe Theatre The Globe Theater, an entertainment outlet for all people of that time, provided a place for Shakespeare's plays to be performed. It was the third and most famous playhouse in London. When it was built, it was one of the most important playhouses in London. The Globe's architecture was intriguing for its time and its life was long and prosperous. The Globe was built by two brothers, Cuthbert and Richard Burbage. They had inherited the Globe's predecessor, The Theatre, from their father, James Burbage (Williams 365). Fearing their lease would run out, the brothers dismantled it and carried the materials to Bankside, where the Swan and Rose already stood (Britanica). It was built ... Each of the sixteen shareholders of the globe made about 25 pounds (Williams 365). When James came to the throne in 1603, he favored the Globe, bringing it success (Andrews 167). "One night before a planned revolt, The Chamberlain's company was asked to perform Richard II in order to instill mutinous thoughts in the audience." (Westerhof) The admission to the Globe was one shilling to the boxes. Lee stated that the general admission was one penny, and a stool on the stage was sixpence. Posters, or bills, were placed throughout London on rails and posts. John Northbrooke said in 1579, "They used to set up their bills upon posts some certain days before to admonish people to make resort to their theatres." The Globe was thought to have gotten its name from the sign representing Hercules or Atlas carrying the globe with the motto, "All the World's a Stage." (Williams 365) In 1613, the Globe burnt down accidentally during a performance of Henry VIII (Miller–Schutz 21). Because of Spain's growing empire, the influence from this region brought over a variety clothing styles. It seems that generally people back then all wore thick layers even in hot weather. Outfits were very structured and rigid, possibly due to preserving a straight back for great posture and manners. Many accessories were added to increase one's image and social stature. Usually, outfits included a black color. This is the first time that black is introduced into clothing. Black clothes would have the effect of making one seem sleeker in figure and it would complement many different colors of inside layers or accessories. Prior to this research of the Globe Theatre, I only knew of it as a famous and popular stage theatre that William Shakespeare helped fund to build, but I had not recognized nor known of the difficulties it had throughout its existence. Often people believe that history is always changing, but is that the case? The study of history can be perceived as "constantly evolving, never–ending journey of discovery" (Ponic, 2011). • 40. The Globe Theatre : The Importance And Influence Of The... The motto and saying of the Globe theatre is "Totus Mundus Agit Histrionem", which meant "The Whole World is a Playhouse." Perhaps this means, since it is called the "Globe" Theatre, that the plays here can be shared throughout the whole world, "and from its circular shape" (Gurr), from which it was built. The Globe Theatre was one the most best places to watch a play in the Elizabethan era, because the plays had an important lesson to teach that still has an affect and emotion on society today when these stories are told to other people. So that brings the question: what is the Globe Theatre, and why is it such a great historical landmark? The Globe Theatre had many important characteristics that made it famous, such as how it began, where it was built, the structure, many different features, and how it contributed to the Elizabethan Era. The Origin of the Globe Theatre all started with Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain's men. The Lord Chamberlain's men were a group of actors that worked for Shakespeare, acted, and participated in plays that Shakespeare wrote. "Christopher Marlowe, who inspired Shakespeare, was born in the same year as him but was active in theatres before he was." (Hartnoll 72–90) From the inspiration, "Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain's men both paid into building the Globe Theatre" (Gurr) and was "built in 1599 by Cuthbert Burbage." (Mabillard) This theatre was in Southwark, London, just like the Rose and Swan Theatres. The structure of the Theatre was very important back in the Elizabethan era as well. Some key parts that were included into the building and design of the Globe Theatre included that "the timber that was used to build the Globe Theatre was the same timber that was used to build the original theatre." (Evans) The original theatre was built by Richard Burbage's father, James Burbage in 1576, therefore, when the Globe theatre was built, the timber was 23 years old! Another key part of the design of the Globe Theatre is that it was built similar to the Coliseum, but in a smaller scale. The Coliseum in Rome had a circular shape just like the Globe Theatre, the reason the Globe theatre was built to this sort of design is that Classic Greek and Roman architecture was ... Throughout Shakespeare's play The Tempest, the main character Prospero refers to his magic, and it is through his magical abilities that the story is set in motion. In the play, Prospero controls characters and events, much like a playwright does. Shakespeare created Prospero as a guise for himself, through similarities in personality, manipulation abilities, and environment, to demonstrate and reflect on his literary abilities before bidding farewell to the theater. Shakespeare could have created Prospero by incorporating elements of his personality and life into Prospero. Shakespeare came from a good family, his mother was the heiress to a land and his father was a bailiff in Stratford. Since his father was a town official education was free, and Shakespeare was sent to a good quality grammar school. There, he learned to read, write, and speak Latin. (William Shakespeare). • 46. Representation Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew By William... Written in the late 16th century during the Elizabethan era, the Taming of the Shrew is a play by William Shakespeare. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious "shrew", daughter to father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to methods intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively "tame" her, by Petruchio, a bachelor on the prowl for wealthy women. Having been performed throughout the centuries to create a historical assortment of varied adaptations, versions of Taming of the Shrew have changed in accordance with time periods and related shifting social expectations and culture. Discussed by literary academia extensively, a particular manifestation reflecting such changes among this cohort of portrayals is the representation of women. Notably, a clear trend about the societal attitudes at the time of presentation of versions can be assumed by examining and comparing the depiction of women in two adaptations; the Globe Theatre's directed by Toby Frow in 2012, a production expressing social norms from the Elizabethan era, and the BBC's ShakespeaRE–told TV episode directed by David Richards (BBC Retold), set in modern times. Elizabeth never visited the theatre herself, but was known to have invited companies of actors to perform for her at court, as is shown by this extract from government records in 1572: "To the Lord Chamberlain's players at Whitehall, 25 February 1572, for a play presented by them before Her Majesty on St Stephen's Day." During his project in 1989, the original building's skeleton was uncovered and this discovery aided with Wanamaker's attempt at replicating the original building. Wanamaker's vision was ultimately completed in 1996, but the official opening took place the next year, much to the public's satisfaction. • 54. William Shakespeare 's The Globe Theatre During the Elizabethan Era, The Globe Theatre was a very influential upcoming piece of architecture that even Shakespeare first had his plays performed in. Although it was very difficult to keep the building standing for long, it inspired many new theatre styles and still lives on today in England. The Globe Theatre was extremely influential during the Elizabethan Era because of its long history, unique architecture, and new ways of acting to go along with the new theatre style. Although the majority of Shakespeare's plays were first produced in the original Globe Theatre, his plays used to be performed in other forms of amphitheaters, such as halls, inns or open arenas (Cummings). Shakespeare belonged to a company called Chamberlain's Men. They acted and before The Globe Theatre even existed, they would perform in The Theatre, originally built and owned by James Burbage (Cummings). The Burbage family consisted of James, the father and owner of The Theatre, and Cuthbert Burbage, who was not actor but admired theatre (Cummings). The other son of James Burbage was Robert Burbage, an actor in the Chamberlain's Men acting company and star of most Shakespearian plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet (Cummings). In 1597, the land that The Theatre was built on had a lease that was almost up, and Giles Allen, the owner of the land, wished to tear the building down (Pressley). Because of this dispute, The Globe Theatre came into existence. While working very fast, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Katherine's Speech In Taming Of The Shrew The ambiguity of whether Katherine's final speech is authentic, in which she apparently proclaims and promulgates female submissiveness, has been thought to define the tone of versions of Taming of the Shrew. However, the attitudes evoked by the monologue can also indicate values of society at the times which the play is presented. Generally, four main theories have emerged regarding the true intent behind Katherine's speech (Wikipedia, 2017): It is sincere and Katherine has been successfully "tamed". It is sincere, but because Katherine has fallen in love with Petruchio. It is ironic and is deceiving Petruchio by "parroting a socially acceptable, totally impersonal catalogue of honours a wife owes her husband" (De Wachter, 2016). It is neither, following the farcical disposition of the play–within–a–play framing device. Up until the 20th century, most of the last speeches by Katherine have adhered with the first option, including the traditional Globe Theatre adaptation. Katherine's acting in the Globe Theatre production, grounded in her facial expressions and tone of voice, shows sincerity and truthfulness in her declaration (V.ii). On the basis of this portrayal, it could be said that in a historical Elizabethan context, audiences would have accepted and deemed the domestication mechanisms and taming practises employed by Petruchio as normal. In contrast, "in a modern Western society holding relatively egalitarian views on gender", interpretations of Katherine's address ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The events which took place in The Globe's past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of theater and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at its time, and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future. In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be allowed to build his theatre known as "The Theatre". It was located north of the London Wall (Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there were many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those involved in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to protect their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had hoped he would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598 while Giles Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers, ... Globe Theater Essay "Unlike today's spectacles, a Shakespearean playhouse–goer really had to use their imagination; there were no backdrops, no lighting to speak of, horrific acoustics, and few, if any, props"("Shaking it up with Shakespeare"4). You really had to imagine a performance going on in the Globe, you weren't just going to sit down and watch you had to think about what was going on. When the theater was just beginning, people thought it might be for the worse, but really it made them closer with the people around them and taught them a lot about literature. The Globe theater was one of the only theaters that was a big open amphitheater, that wasn't as private as other Elizabethan theaters. During the Elizabethan time, the Globe theater impacted the ... One of the reasons the Globe stood out it that it welcomed all ranges of people, from people paying "But while the Globe Theatre, and indeed, the entire Elizabethan theater scene opened its doors to the low life of the pits, it also accommodated an audience of higher–status, well–heeled, and better educated individuals" (Locklear 1). Even though it was a good growth between the connection of the social classes, there was some controversy between the people. The more educated and higher up people were always the "boss" of the audience. When the people were discussing the performance and the education from it, the wealthier peoples opinions mattered most. Also known as, the Bard of Stratford–Upon–Avon, William Shakespeare is widely regarded and the most prolific poet and writer of all time. Having amassed a portfolio that includes a great many works, his work being some of the most critically acclaimed work of all time. Yet, what we know about Shakespeare the man, is meager compared to our understanding of his works. This gap in knowledge has contributed to the questioning of the authenticity of Shakespeare as a real person. While there are some unexplained inconsistencies in the historical record of William Shakespeare's life, evidence supports that he was, in fact, the author and playwright who wrote thirty–eight plays and one hundred and fifty–four sonnets. Born four hundred and fifty–three years ago, in Stratford–Upon–Avon, the exact day of Shakespeare's birthday is unknown, but is widely recognized as April 26, 1564. Many births in those days were home births with no recording or official records made. However, church records were more diligent, so his assumed date of birth is related to his baptismal date. Shakespeare attended Stratford Grammar School until roughly the age of fourteen, by all records, that is when Shakespeare's formal education ended. Between the ages of fourteen and eighteen there is a gap in what historians know about Shakespeare's life. The actors and the audience throughout the performances had tears, laughter, and many left in complete awe. Every seat in this three story theatre was packed tightly with over 30,000 eyes watching. Flags rose, and trumpets started to play in the Globe while productions began. The Globe Theatre started an era of acting in the late 1500's and changed the way we look at performing still to this day. This theatre was jaw dropping as people entered this "salvaged wood" framed theatre. In 1599, the stage was ready for acts to begin. The name of the Globe Theatre was for people to know that the "whole round world" could be represented by every actor. William Shakespeare referred to the theatre as " this wooden 'O' " (Langly). In Elizabethan times, the ground along the bankside could flood by the Thames, so the Globe had to have solid foundations. After about 1600, as many as 15,000 people went to the city's playhouse every week. The Globe was designed and was a "hodgepodge" of architectural structures. This framework held the first performances. All actors were men. It did not matter whether the role was a woman or man. The theatre was also one of the only social sites that brought together different classes of people. Of this three story masterpiece there were special sections reserved for members of nobility. But this rough magic I here abjure,"(V. i. 50 ) is a quote from Shakespeare's The Tempest . Throughout Shakespeare's play The Tempest, the main character Prospero refers to his magic, and it is through his magical abilities that the story is set in motion. In the play, Prospero controls characters and events, much like the playwright Shakespeare does. However, Prospero gave him the opportunity to do so because he was immersed in his studies. Prospero spent his time in the library learning and studying instead of watching over the kingdom of Milan. Both Shakespeare and Prospero were bright, however, Prospero was more educated and had more access to resources than Shakespeare did. • 74. What Is The Significance Of The Globe Theatre The Globe Theatre is an open–air playhouse which is considered one of the most famous theatres in the world. Many of Shakespeare's plays were written so that they could be performed in the theatre, and he was a part of the company that constructed and owned it. The theatre was built during a time whereby there was an entertainment vacuum in London, and was thus hugely popular amongst the masses for the variety of plays that graced its stage. Unfortunately, it was shut down and demolished in less than a hundred years but it remains as one of theatrical history's most significant icons. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was originally an Elizabethan theatre that was built in 1599 in London, and it was named as such due to the fact that Shakespeare wrote multiple plays which were staged there. It was one of the major theatres in the area it was built in (Southwark) along with the Rose Theatre, Hope Theatre and Swan Theatre. As a dramatist, Shakespeare was ... Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was truly the most magnificent theatre that was built in its time, and a replica of it exists today in the same location it was originally built in. Other replicas such as the Panasonic Globe Theatre in Tokyo have also been built around the world, albeit not as accurate as the first one in Southwark is. • 76. William Shakespeare's Mandate William Shakespeare was born in Stratford–upon–Avon, a flourishing town in central England with a population of two–thousand at the time. He was born to Mary Arden, a local heiress, and John Shakespeare, a leather merchant and town bailiff, who both had been long–time residents of the town. While the exact date of his birth is unknown, it is estimated that Shakespeare's birthdate is or was around the 23rd of April, 1564, because of a record of his baptization three days later; children were baptized as early as possible during this time, around three days after their birth. He had eight siblings: five younger brothers and sisters, named Gilbert, Richard, Edmund, Joan, and Ann, and three others that died during their births. From an early age, Shakespeare was given an intense education in comparison to other children during his time. His parents never received any education, and because of this they strived to give their children excellent educations. Unfortunately, those are two questions many people don't have an answer to. So, what is the history? The history of The Globe Theatre comes from a building known as The Theatre. The Theatre, had been built by James Burbage, in Shoreditch (District in the East End of London) in 1576. The Burbage's had a 20–year lease of the land where the theater had been built. When the lease was up, the landlord intended on knocking the theater down. However, with the lease ending, James Burbage built the theatre in Blackfriars as a replacement. Unfortunately the wealthy people of Blackfriars persuaded the government to forbid its use for plays. James Burbage died in 1597. The members of the Lord Chamberlain's Men had to rent a theater. In 1598, they decided to build a theater of their own. The Burbage's sons got their fathers inheritance, Cuthbert and Richard, which were connected the Blackfriars, they formed an agreement with Shakespeare and a few other actors, who became partners for the new Globe.
