The USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor in 1898, killing 266 American sailors. The United States blamed Spain for the sinking and used it to justify going to war with Spain over Cuba. The USS Maine's sinking began with two explosions, a small one followed by a much larger blast that set off the ship's electrical system and was accompanied by a bright flash of light, sinking the ship and killing many aboard.
