The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, bombing US ships and killing 2,403 military staff in an attempt to weaken American interference with Japanese expansion plans in the Pacific. In response, the US entered World War II on the side of the Allies against the Axis powers including Japan and Germany. Japan launched the surprise attack to remove the US as an obstacle to allowing it to further expand its empire in Asia and the Pacific.
