DISCOVER
Welcome to Leiden, a city and also a garden. Enclosed by the
6km long Singel Promenade, the Garden of Leiden can be
explored on foot, by boat or by bicycle. With a day pass you
can hop on and off the Singel Navigation boats and access the
public bicycles. Bicycle stations are located at De Burcht and
along the Singel Promenade.
Discover myriad hidden gardens within the Garden of Leiden.
Highlights include the original Hortus Botanicus laid out by
Clusius, the world class Meelfabrik Gardens and Singel
Gardens, themed museum gardens and the renowned 'Gardens
without Boundaries', made by the people of Leiden. They
combine to make Leiden the greenest and most botanically
diverse city in the Netherlands.
Enjoy the mysterious plant life. There are over 2,000 native
and exotic plant species to be found in the Garden of Leiden,
derived from all over the world. Local growers supply the
plants, continuing and celebrating the Netherlands pioneering
horticultural tradition. Guided tours and specialist botanical
exhibitions take place throughout the year.
Learn about the living world. Open to the public 365 days a
year and located throughout the Garden of Leiden are artworks
and scientific installations revealing the fascinating systems
of life. Themes include astrology, cartography, ethnobotony,
medicine and meterology. Further information about the
Garden of Leiden and a guidebook are available from the De
Burcht Interpretation Centre.
