Singapore received its name from a visiting Sumatran prince in the 14th century who saw a lion on the island. The prince founded the city of Singapura, meaning "Lion City" in Sanskrit. Today the Merlion symbolizes Singapore's early connections to this legend. Singapore is a small island nation located between Malaysia and Indonesia in Southeast Asia, with a total land area of 697 square kilometers. It has a tropical climate and a multi-racial population of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian people groups. Singapore is known as a food paradise for dishes like chili crab, satay, steamboat, and chicken rice.
